Notizen: We have studied the influence of deposition conditions on the structure and properties of Co84Cr14Ta2 alloy magnetic thin films and Cr underlayers sputtered onto circumferentially textured and smooth polished NiP/Al substrates. Suitable processing conditions provide in-plane magnetic anisotropy in the textured media, with enhanced coercivity (Hc) and coercivity squareness (S*) in the circumferential direction and reduced Hc and S* in the radial direction. The crystallography in these films was studied by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to address the origin of the observed magnetic anisotropy. The CoCrTa alloy grains are found to grow semicoherently on the chromium underlayer, resulting in vertical 〈200(approximately-greater-than) Cr and 〈112¯0(approximately-greater-than) CoCrTa axes. This requires an in-plane orientation of the CoCrTa c axis, which is observed to be nearly random by high-resolution TEM. Microdiffraction shows apparent preferred c-axis alignment locally at texture lines, but this observation is primarily attributable to asymmetric tilting of the vertical growth direction caused by the substrate topography. The 〈112¯0(approximately-greater-than) growth axis appears to be perpendicular to the local grooved surface, not the bulk surface, requiring a local c-axis out-of-plane tilt near the grooves. The anisotropic surface topography induces a corresponding anisotropy in the out-of-plane component of the magnetically easy c axis in the CoCrTa alloy, which we suggest has implications on the bulk magnetic anisotropy in such films.

Notizen: Media having Cr-underlayer and NiP-underlayer were compared using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), delta-M, torque (vertical component), and media noise measurements. TEM micrographs show that NiP-underlayer media were more isolated than Cr-underlayer media. Of the Cr-underlayer media, CoCrTa media seem to exhibit grain isolation. The grain size of NiP-underlayer media was smaller (30 nm) than that of Cr-underlayer media (60 nm). Results indicate that media with isolated grains seem to have higher vertical component than media with more continuous grains. The NiP-underlayer media exhibits lower media noise than the Cr-underlayer media. This is attributed to smaller and more isolated grains in the NiP-underlayer media.

Notizen: High-resolution transmission-electron microscopy (HRTEM) has been used to analyze CoCrTa, CoCrPt, and CoNiCrPt alloy thin films deposited under similar conditions onto NiP plated Al substrates with a Cr underlayer. Apparent ∼50 nm Co alloy grains observed by bright field TEM are found to be clusters of smaller 10–20 nm grains with a common growth orientation. Subtle differences have also been observed in the stacking fault density, Co alloy fcc phase concentration, lattice mismatch, and grain separation in the films. In particular, HRTEM shows that the CoCrTa film has clear physical separation between the 10 and 20 nm grains, which is not observed in the other media. Despite similar hysteresis loop properties, the signal-to-noise ratio of CoCrTa is 2.3 dB higher than CoCrPt and 4.6 dB higher than CoNiCrPt. Small isolated grains have been shown to improve media noise, as is observed in CoCrTa media.

Notizen: We have studied low frequency (1/f) noise of YBa2Cu3O7−δ dc superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) on SrTiO3 bicrystal substrates. 1/f flux noise, either measured at different temperatures for optimized bias current or measured at 77 K for different bias currents, is almost constant. These facts imply that 1/f noise mainly comes from fluctuations of the critical current of the Josephson junction that form the SQUID. Also, we explain the critical current fluctuations in the junction by an equilibrium temperature fluctuation model.

Notizen: Magnetic and noise properties of oriented CoCrTa/Cr media sputtered at temperatures from ambient to 250 °C were studied and correlated with microstructural data from HRSEM and HRTEM micrographs. Coercivity increases monotonically and loop squareness decreases with substrate temperature. Transition and uniform magnetization noise power are highest for media sputtered at 150 °C. Micrographs and noise powers show that the media sputtered at 150 °C is relatively highly exchange-coupled. Media sputtered below 150 °C shows topographic isolation, and those sputtered above 150 °C exhibit increasing intergranular isolation of about 10 A(ring) and thus lower exchange. Coercivity varies linearly but exchange drops abruptly at high temperature. Other mechanisms besides exchange contribute to the coercivity variation.

Notizen: We report the fabrication and characterization of thin-film grain boundary junctions in Tl-based superconductors on bicrystal substrates. Post-deposition processed Tl2Ba2CaCu2O8 films were grown on bicrystal SrTiO3 substrates, with varying degrees of misorientation angle θ. Critical current densities and current-voltage curves had a strong dependence on θ. For θ≥10°, there was a two-to-three order of magnitude reduction in critical current density, and for θ≥20°, the current-voltage curves displayed resistively shunted junction behavior. These high angle grain boundary junctions have features at 77 K that are attractive for device applications, including sharp voltage onsets, well-behaved dc magnetic and rf field dependence, IcRn products as large as 300 μV, and low 1/f noise. Simple dc superconducting quantum interference devices fabricated with these junctions exhibited transfer functions of up to 30 μV/Φ0 at 77 K.

Notizen: Levels of platelet-activating factor (PAF) in blood from 12 bronchial asthmatic patients (six atopic and six nonatopic) were measured by radioimmunoassay after lipid extraction and separation by high-performance liquid chromatography. None of the patients were given disodium cromoglycate and prednisolone, and they were instructed to take only regular medications during the tests. Blood was drawn from the patients in a fasting state, and PAF levels were compared between the times when they were free of asthmatic symptoms and when they had mild spontaneous attacks. Ten (six atopic and four nonatopic) out of 12 patients, when they had the asthmatic attacks, showed higher levels of PAF than when they were free of the symptoms. Blood PAF levels of the patients with the active symptoms were significantly higher than those of normal healthy control subjects, suggesting that PAF may play a role in bronchial asthma.

Notizen: Critical current densities and upper critical fields were measured for a single crystal of the high Tc oxide superconductor, Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d, by transport within the ab basal plane and along the c axis. The anisotropy in critical current densities was observed to be Jc⊥/Jc(parallel)=10, in agreement with the anisotropy in resistivity for the normal state. The scaling of the critical current density with the magnetic field was found. The critical current density scaled to zero at fields Bc2 in the ab plane and along the c axis which were in good agreement with the upper critical fields measured by transport.

Notizen: The Ag-coated superconducting Bi2 Sr2 CaCu2 Ox glass-ceramic fibers were successfully prepared. The glass fibers with a length of 50 cm, a width of 100–200 μm, and a thickness of about 20 μm were first drawn from glass plates with a thickness of 1 mm and then silver pastes were coated on the smooth surface of glass fibers. The Ag-coated glass fibers were converted into superconductors after annealing at temperatures of 820–860 °C. The main crystalline phase in the glass-ceramic fibers was the superconducting low Tc phase. The Ag-coated glass-ceramic fibers obtained by annealing at 840 °C for 5 h in air exhibited superconductivity with a Tc (zero)=70 K and a critical current density (60 K, zero magnetic field) of more than 40 A/cm2 .
