Notes: A simple, versatile device for dispersing micrometer- and submicrometer-sized particles in vacuum is described. The source allows control of particle size (0.5 μm≤l≤200 μm) and particle flux density up to roughly 107 cm−2 s−1. Several types of microparticles were successfully dispersed.

Notes: A simple, gas-fed, radio-frequency-driven plasma source is described. By use of lower hybrid waves, noble gas plasmas were produced with electron densities up to 1012 cm−3 over a range of magnetic fields from 400 G to 1.5 kG and rf frequencies from 2–220 MHz.

Notes: Positive/negative ion plasmas, composed of Ba+, SF6−, and residual electrons, were observed to display characteristics of strong turbulence. Experiments on the UCI Q machine linked the presence of negative ions (and the depletion of electrons) with large density fluctuations (δn/n(approximately-equal-to)1), large-amplitude, low-frequency electrostatic noise (f≤20 kHz), and rapid transport of ions across magnetic field lines (D⊥(approximately-equal-to)104 cm2/sec). Ion velocity distributions were heated parallel to and cooled perpendicular to the confining magnetic field. The partial pressure of gaseous SF6 was shown to serve as a regulator of plasma turbulence. Turbulence levels could be smoothly varied from quiescent states (δn/n(approximately-equal-to)0.01) to strongly turbulent states (δn/n(approximately-equal-to)1).

Notes: Summary Application of Sternberger's unlabeled antibody enzyme method for detection of the estrogen receptor (ER) using a rat primary antibody with rat tissues has been discouraged, presumably because nonspecific staining of endogenous IgG was expected with the required anti-rat IgG bridging antibody. Because the blood-brain barrier greatly reduces immunoglobulin infiltration into the brain, we hypothesized that rat brain tissue could be specifically immunostained using rat IgG primary antibodies. A rat monoclonal anti-ER antibody (H222) specifically stained ERs in the brains of ovariectomized but not in ovariectomized estrogen-treated rats. In contrast, the uterus, a well-perfused target organ stained intensely in a nonspecific fashion. Dense populations of estrogen receptors were observed in the medial preoptic area, the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis, and the arcuate and ventromedial nuclei of the hypothalamus. A monoclonal rat IgG directed against alpha-tubulin labeled primarily cortical dendrites quite distinct from the neuronal nuclei that are the primary antigenic sites for the estrogen receptor antibody. These results confirm that the sensitive unlabeled antibody method can be applied to rat brain tissues, even when the primary antibody is rat IgG and that labeling of endogenous IgG may be used as a simple method to evaluate the integrity of the blood brain barrier.

Notes: 1,5-Dioxo-1-methyl-4-azaphosphepane was synthesized and polymeized in the presence of water, stannic chloride, or phosphoric acid. Polymers obtained by using these catalysts were shown to have lower molecular weights than nylon 6 samples prepared under identical reaction conditions. Thermal and other physical properties of the phosphorus-containing polyamide are reported and compared with those of nylon 6.
