Notes: The surface roughness of polished InP (001) wafers were examined by x-ray reflectivity and crystal truncation rod (CTR) measurements. The root-mean-square roughness and the lateral correlation scale were obtained by both methods. The scattering intensities in the scans transverse to the specular reflection rod were found to contain two components. A simple surface model of surface faceting is proposed to explain the experimental data. The sensitivities of the two methods to the surface structure and the role of the resolution functions in the CTR measurements are discussed.

Notes: Interfaces between Si(100) and LaSi2−x lattices formed by rapid thermal annealing at ∼900 °C for 10 s have been studied using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The experimental results show that the C axis of the LaSi2−x unit cell points to the 〈332〉Si direction. A model suggesting the {100} planes of LaSi2−x grown on a {113}Si surface has been put forward to account for the observed tilting growth of LaSi2−x disilicide on the Si(100) surface.

Notes: We have studied the surface scattering of x rays from mechanical-chemical polished InP (001) wafers with sulfur and/or iron doping. The scattering intensities in the scans transverse to the specular reflection rod were found to contain two components. A simple surface model was proposed to explain the experimental data. The results were also compared with those obtained from crystal truncation rod measurements. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Distribution dynamics of fish larvae and juveniles in the coastal waters of the Tanshui River, Taiwan was studied fortnightly using surface horizontal tows with a larval net in daytime during the period from early April through early June 1991. Environmental factors, including water temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, pH, transparency and depth at sampling stations, were also monitored. A total of 10737 fish eggs and 1387 individuals, representing 43 families and 93 species, was collected during five cruises from 12 stations in the coastal waters. Most fish were estuarine-dependent marine species. Liza macrolepis, Ambassis gymnocephalus, Terapon jarbua, Mullidae and Gobiidae were the most dominant, making up 64.7% of the total catch. Early life stages, including egg, preflexion, flexion and postflexion larvae were abundant in surface samples. However, yolk-sac larvae were absent in the surface water, probably due to an ontogenetic behavioral shift as a consequence of a change in specific weight during early development. The species composition of fish larvae and juveniles was related to the microhabitats found in the coastal waters. The physico-chemical conditions, along with ontogenetic behavior, played an important role in larval fish distribution in the coastal waters.

Notes: Abstract Radermachera sinica L. is an ornamental plant with demonstrated sensitivity to ethylene-induced leaf abscission. In this study, we examine the relationship between abscisic acid (ABA) and ethylene in initiating the abscission response. Treatment with 1 μl L\s-1 of ethylene, 1 mM 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) or 1 mM ABA resulted in complete defoliation of leaf explants. Application of 0.125 mM silver thiosulfate (STS) inhibited ethylene- and ACC-induced abscission but had no effect on explants treated with ABA. The ABA-induced abscission was unaffected by treatment with aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG) or aminooxyacetic acid (AOA). Treatment of explants with 1 mM cobalt chloride (CoCl2) or 2000 μl L\s-1 of norbornadiene (NBD) completely inhibited abscission in explants treated with 1 μl L\s-1 ethylene or 1 mM ACC but they were only marginally effective in blocking ABA-induced abscission despite the lower level of endogenous ethylene. ABA appeared to increase the sensitivity of explants to ethylene. However, the evidence suggests that ABA may also function independent of ethylene to induce leaf abscission in R. sinica.

Notes: Summary Two new kinds of crown ethers: 3,5-dibutyl-unsymmetrydibenzo-14-crown-4-dihydroxy (cis-, and trans-) with the OH-terminal silicone oil in different proportion were coated on glass capillary columns, and immobilized by condensation using a coupling agent of alkyltrimethoxysilane. Chromatographic characteristics, including column efficiency, polarity, selectivity, phase transition temperature and thermal stability were studied. The columns were compared with PEG-20M in terms of polarity and selectivity. The immobilization and retention mechanisms are also discussed.
