Notes: Apothecia of Tapesia yallundae are reported for the first time in the UK. They were observed on decaying stems and leaf sheaths of unharvested wheat near Bristol in January 1989. Isolates from single ascospores produced cultures typical of the W-type form of the anamorph, Pseudocercosporella herpotrichoides. Pathogenicity on wheat was confirmed by inoculation and re-isolation from glasshouse-grown wheat seedlings.

Notes: A site with no known history of cereal growing or carbendazim fungicide use was inoculated in 1983 with an equal mixture of spores of R-type and W-type isolates of Pseudocercosporella herpotrichoides. all sensitive to carbendazim. Following three consecutive years of carbendazim sprays, more than 90% of isolates recovered were carbendazim-resistant. A majority of R-type isolates was recovered after 3 years and resistance was found to be more frequent in R-type than in W-type isolates. A mixture of carbendazim with prochloraz initially delayed the development of carbendazim resistance, but after 3 years the incidence of resistance was similar to that where carbendazim alone was applied. The best control of eyespot was given by the mixture and by a split application of prochloraz in the first year, by the mixture in the second year, and by the split prochloraz application in the final year. A greater proportion of R-type isolates was recovered from prochloraz-treated plots than from unsprayed plots; the proportion of these that were resistant to carbendazim was lower than that from carbendazim treatments. Throughout this study isolates resistant to prochloraz were not detected.

Notes: Apple juice was concentrated in a pilot scale reverse osmosis unit using two commercial spiral wound cellulose acetate membranes with 97% (CA-97) and 99% (CA-99) NaCl rejection ratings and an experimental polyamide (PA-99) membrane with 99% salt rejection rating. Flux and concentration rates were higher for the PA-99 membrane than for the CA membranes. Gas chromatographic analysis of feed, permeate, and concentrate samples was undertaken and a mass balance of odor-active volatiles was performed. the PA-99 membrane retained 45% of the total odor-active volatiles while the CA-99 retained 23 %. Acetates were not found to increase when apple juice was concentrated with the cellulose acetate membrane. Retention of individual aroma compounds for the CA-99 and PA-99 membrane was rationalized using polar, nonpolar, and steric parameters.

Notes: Abstract Pieces of the reef coral Montipora verrucosa (Lam.), collected from Kaneohe Bay, Oahu, Hawaii in 1982, were grown in four low-light treatments (11% sunlight): blue, green, red and the full spectrum of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR); and at high-intensity full PAR (90% sunlight). These acclimated corals were then tested for photosynthetic ability in blue, green, red, and white light. The photosynthetic parameters that were measured were; ligh-saturated photosynthetic rate, the initial slope of the photosynthesis/irradiance curve, the light intensity where these two lines crossed, and dark respiration. While acclimation intensity had a pronounced effect, the results also showed that the color of the acclimation treatment influenced the photosynthetic responses of the corals. The color of the light used in the measurements of photosynthesis had much less effect on the photosynthetic responses of the corals.

Notes: Abstract In replicate-plot field experiments done in the UK, at one site in Avon for 3 years and another in Warwickshire for 2 years, application of ethirimol or triadimenol sprays or seed treatments was followed by decreases in sensitivity of mildew samples to the particular fungicide applied. Application of ethirimol-triadimenol or tridemorph-triadimenol mixtures caused smaller or no decreases in sensitivity. Differences between isolates in responses to ethirimol and to triadimenol treatment were usually negatively correlated. Early-season inoculum differed in fungicide sensitivity between sites. At one site sensitivity shifted markedly from one season to another. No clear interactions between cultivar, mildew pathotype and shifts in fungicide response could be discerned. There were no major differences in resistance build-up between seed or spray treatments.

Notes: The pathology of thrombophlebitis primarily results from the obliteration of venous valves in the lower extremities. The objective of this study was to develop a prosthetic venous valve that could be implanted in the human femoral system to ameliorate the deleterious effects of thrombophlebitis. Prosthetic venous valves were produced from two materials: Pellethane valves were fabricated from a dip-casting process; umbilical vein valves were produced by a fixation process. The valves were evaluated as implants within the external jugular veins of 10 research dogs. Each animal was implanted with one Pellethane valve in one external jugular vein and one umbilical vein venous valve in the contralateral jugular vein. Each valve was positioned over a stainless-steel cylinder that had been implanted into the jugular veins in such a manner that there existed no blood-cylinder interaction. Patency of the valves was determined by X-ray venography at 24, 48, and 72 h and at 5 and 8 days postoperatively. All of the umbilical vein venous valves were occluded by the end of 48 h, whereas two of the Pellethane venous valves remained patent for at least 5 days but were occluded at 8 days. The results of this study suggest the possibility of success of Pellethane valve implants in the venous circulation and indicate future directions for study.
