    Notes: Excimer laser ablation was used to prepare thin films from a bulk target of SmBa2Cu3O7. The systematic variation in film thickness, stoichiometry, and microstructure, as a function of laser fluence and angle from the target surface normal, was determined. We show that films which are stoichiometric over wide solid angles can be rapidly prepared from this material by use of high laser fluence. Films prepared from various Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O targets at high laser fluence also reproduce bulk stoichiometry. In contrast, films prepared by this technique from a YBa2Cu3O7 target are deficient in Ba and Cu for laser fluences required to produce compositional homogeneity over wide areas.

    Notes: We report the first successful preparation of thin films of Y-Ba-Cu-O superconductors using pulsed excimer laser evaporation of a single bulk material target in vacuum. Rutherford backscattering spectrometry showed the composition of these films to be close to that of the bulk material. Growth rates were typically 0.1 nm per laser shot. After an annealing treatment in oxygen the films exhibited superconductivity with an onset at 95 K and zero resistance at 85 and 75 K on SrTiO3 and Al2O3 substrates, respectively. This new deposition method is relatively simple, very versatile, and does not require the use of ultrahigh vacuum techniques.

    Notes: Superconducting properties of RBa2Cu3O7−x compounds (R=Y, La, Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, and Yb) have been studied by dc electrical resistivity and ac magnetic susceptibility techniques. Except for R=La, which is superconducting below 50 K, RBa2Cu3O7−x compounds exhibit sharp resistive and inductive transitions in the 90-K range. The nearly constant value of Tc for magnetic R ions indicates a very weak interaction between R ions, as anticipated from the known crystal structure of these materials. The effects of annealing in oxygen and argon, and air quenching, on the superconducting properties are also discussed.

    Notes: The magnetic properties of CeSi, which crystallizes in the FeB-type orthorhombic structure, have been investigated. CeSi orders antiferromagnetically at 5.6 K. Its ground-state magnetic moment attains a value of 1.47 μB in a field of 57 kOe at 3.0 K, which is far above the highest value ever observed for any Ce compound. The magnetic properties of this compound are like conventional stable moment rare-earth compounds and differ from other nearly trivalent Ce compounds. More specifically, unlike nearly trivalent Ce intermetallic compounds, no evidence for Kondo effect is apparent in this compound.

    Notes: We report Ce-L3-valence state and temperature-dependent resistivity results on two pseudoternary alloy series: CeT3Bn where n=1 with T=(Pd, Rh) and where n=2 with T=(Rh,Ru). Our results indicate that both series pass continuously from a Kondo local-moment regime to a mixed valent regime to a saturated valence regime with decreasing 4d electron concentration on the T sublattice. We correlate the temperature-dependent resistivity results with the Ce-L3-valence variation for both series. For the n=1 series, Kondo-type behavior appears in the local-moment regime, while for the n=2 series, ferromagnetism appears in the local-moment regime. We also note that in the mixed valence regime, for both series, the absolute value of the resistance drops rapidly, indicating a loss of magnetic scattering.

    Notes: X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements on rare-earth (R) and Ba sites in the new superconducting oxides and in binary rare-earth oxides are discussed. All of the near-edge spectra appear to manifest a continuum resonance feature whose energy is quantitatively well correlated with the R–O and Ba–O bond lengths. Evidence supporting a second such feature related to the R/Ba interatomic distance is also presented. Finally, simultaneous consideration of both of these features appears consistent with the inverse square-law expectation for the interatomic distance dependence of the energies of these spectra features.

    Notes: X-ray photoemission measurements of Y-, Sm-, Eu-, and Yb-based high-temperature superconductors show a clear correlation between Cu 2p satellite features, which previous work has shown are associated with materials which exhibit superconductivity, and a high-binding-energy peak in the O 1s spectrum. In samples with varying oxygen content the intensity of the Cu 2p satellites changes, reflecting the Cu valence which varies between 1+ and 2+. The high-binding-energy O peak appears to track the Cu valence. This high-binding-energy peak may be indicative of the presence of O 2p holes, suggested in some models as necessary for superconductivity. The Ba 3d peak position also changes systematically with the Cu valence.

    Notes: Abstract The mycoflora of the hair in 178 goats from the West Bank of Jordan was analysed and the frequency of occurrence and the relative importance value for the different keratinophilic fungi found were calculated. One hundred and seven species which belong to 38 genera were isolated. Thirty six of these species were either well recognised agents of mycoses (Trichophyton mentagrophytes, T. verrucosum, and M. nanum), or have been frequently isolated from human and animal lesions (Arthroderma spp., Acremonium kiliense, Alternaria alternata, Aspergillus flavus, Cladosporium carionii, and several other species). These potentially pathogenic fungal species comprised 66.9% of all keratinophilic fungi found on the hair of goats. The role of this animal as a reservoir for dermatophytes and other potentially pathogenic fungi is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract The mycoflora of hair of 111 cows, donkeys, rabbits, cats, and dogs were analysed and the frequency of occurrence and the relative importance value of the different fungal species isolated were calculated. Total numbers of species 56, 45, 48, 23, and 11 were recovered from cows, donkeys, rabbits, cats, and dogs respectively. The majority of the keratinophilic fungi isolated were either well-known mycotic agents or have been recovered from various animal and human lesions. These comprised 87.8%, 66.7%, 61.4%, 59.3%, and 55.2% of the hair mycoflora in cats, dogs, rabbis, cows, and donkeys respectively. Seven species of dermatophytes were isolated: Trichophyton mentagrophytes, T. verrucosum, Microsporum gypseum, M. nanum, T. ajelloi, and M. canis. Cats harboured the largest number of dermatophytes (5 species), followed by cows (4 spp), rabbits (3 spp), and donkeys and dogs (1 sp). The role of these animals in the persistence and transmission of pathogenic fungi is discussed.
