Notes: Abstract Tarnish tests conducted in a 0.1% sodium sulphide solution have shown that ternary nickel-copper-manganese alloys, such as 40Ni-30Cu-30Mn and 50Ni-30Cu-20Mn, have superior tarnishment resistance than other alloys, e.g. 20Ni-40Cu-40Mn, 30Ni-30Cu-40Mn and 30Ni-40Cu-30Mn. It was also found that 40Ni-30Cu-30Mn and 50Ni-30Cu-20Mn alloys have lower values of colour change vector than the other alloys given above.

Notes: Abstract The values of setting expansion of investment under uniaxial stress have been determined at conditions designed to obtain the difference of setting expansion between that parallel to the loading direction and that perpendicular to the loading axis. The setting expansion curves were represented by $$a(t) = a_0 (1 - P/E')[1 - exp( - kt)]$$ along the loading direction and $$a(t) = a_0 (1 + \nu 'P/E')[1 - exp( - kt)]$$ perpendicular to the loading direction, wherea(t) is a setting expansion,a 0 = 0.009,ν′ = 0.2,E′ = 5 kg cm−2,k = 0.032 min−1,P applied stress, andt the time (min). On the basis of these results, a method to estimate the value of setting expansion under restrictive force was developed. According to this method, the setting expansion of the investment could be calculated by substitutingϱε/ϱt forε, ka 0 exp (−kt)/E′ for 1/E, ν′ forν, andka 0 exp (−kt) forαT in the theory of elasticity.

Notes: Abstract Kinetic analysis of thermogravi metric data in visible-light-cured composite restoratives has been carried out and a comparison was made with that for a conventional chemically-cured composite. The results reveal that the thermal decomposition of polymers as the base resin in the composites rnay be governed by a single process, and the value of activation energy is different in decomposing the base resins thermally. The different values suggest that the kinds of base resins and the catalysts may have an effect on the thermal decomposition.

Notes: Abstract The ternary nickel-copper-manganese (Ni-Cu-Mn) cast alloys were studied on hardening by the addition of elements such as aluminium and indium to the ternary alloys. Tensile tests showed that both the 20 Ni-40 Cu-40 Mn (which has the lowest melting temperature of all the Ni-Cu-Mn ternary alloys investigated) and the 50 Ni-30 Cu-20 Mn (with the highest melting temperature) exhibited a ductile behaviour. Dendritic structures seen by optical microscopy were constituted of ternary alloys containing aluminium and indium and the amount of dendritic structures increased in the indium-containing alloys rather than in the aluminium containing alloys, and as a result the hardness (VHN) had larger values in the latter alloy than in the former alloy.

    Notes: Abstract The setting expansion of gypsum-bonded investment has been measured within an elastic ring, and the equation to calculate the setting expansion has been obtained considering the effect of the mechanical properties of the ring and the ring radii on the setting expansion values. The result conclusively demonstrates that the calculated setting expansion values agree with the level measured for gypsum-bonded investment. The expansions calculated according to the equation below and those measured in an acrylic ring agree fairly well $$\begin{gathered} U_i (r,t) = \frac{{rLE'}}{{1 - \nu '}}\left[ {1 - exp\left\{ { - \frac{{1 - \nu '}}{{E'}}\frac{{a_0 }}{L}\left[ {1 - exp\left( { - kt} \right)} \right]} \right\}} \right] \hfill \\ L = \frac{{(1 - \nu )A^2 + (1 + \nu )B^2 }}{{E_r (B^2 - A^2 )}} \hfill \\ \end{gathered} $$ whereE′ = 5 kg cm−2,ν′ = 0.2,α 0 = 0.009, andk = 0.032 min−1,A andB denote the inner and outer radii, andν andE r Poisson's ratio and Young's modulus of the ring, respectively.

Notes: Abstract Glass fibres for industrial use were laid on denture base materials such as self-curing and heat-curing resins to reinforce them. The use of heat-curing rather than self-curing resin as a base resin indicated a superior effect on bending properties.

Notes: Abstract A study on laying glass fibres with different aspect and volume ratios into denture base resin is presented. Increased strength and toughness are found for the composites containing glass fibres with higher ratios. Their characteristics have prompted the inclusion of surface treated glass fibres in denture materials.

Notes: Abstract Nickel solubility in ternary Ni-Cu-Mn alloys (20 Ni-40 Cu-40 Mn, 30 Ni-30 Cu-40 Mn, 30 Ni-40 Cu-30 Mn, 40 Ni-30 Cu-30 Mn and 50 Ni-30 Cu-20 Mn) was investigated in 1% lactic acid (pH=2.3) and 0.1% sodium sulphide solution (pH=12.0). The tarnish test in 0.1% sodium sulphide solution showed that all ternary Ni-Cu-Mn alloys have very small amounts of nickel released from them. It also appears that the ternary 40 Ni-30 Cu-30 Mn and 50 Ni-30 Cu-20 Mn alloys have a lower nickel solubility than those of the other alloys in 1% lactic acid.
