    Notes: Abstract: Kindling is an animal model of epilepsy. Previously somatostatin (SRIF) was implicated in seizure activity in the brain. Recently we reported a significant increase in brain SRIF content in the temporal cortices and cortices of kindled rats. Since the interaction between the neurotransmitter and the receptor eventually is responsible for the biological response, the present study was undertaken to examine evidence for the participation of SRIF receptor in the kindled state. In this study we present a procedure for detection of SRIF receptors using radiolabeled (D-Tyr8)-SRIF as a tracer. The present study indicates that in kindled rats there are no differences in the total number or affinity of the binding sites in the temporal cortex and a slight increase in the total number of binding sites in the cortex when compared with controls. These results, in view of our other observations, suggest that in kindled rat brain there may be an increased release of SRIF but no down-regulation of SRIF receptors in temporal cortex and cortex. There appears to be a significant decrease in the number of SRIF receptors in kindled hippocampus. The mechanism by which this occurs remains unclear.

    Notes: Summary To elucidate biochemical features leading to p-hydroxyphenyl-rich lignin in gymnosperm reaction wood the activities of the following five enzymes involved in the biosynthesis of p-hydroxyphenyl lignin were compared in reaction and opposite woods: phenylalanine ammonialyase (EC 4.3.1.5), cinnamate 4-hydroxylase (EC 1.14.13.11), p-hydroxycinnamate: CoA ligase (EC 6.2.1.12), cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.-) and peroxidase (EC 1.11.1.7). The enzyme activities in the reaction woods of Thuja orientalis and Metasequoia glyptostroboides were remarkably higher than those in the opposite woods, reflecting the higher contents of p-hydroxyphenyl lignin in reaction wood.

    Notes: Abstract The activities of the following five enzymes which are involved in the formation of lignin have been compared in reaction wood and in opposite wood: phenylalanine ammonia lyase (EC 4.3.1.5), caffeate 3-O-methyltransferase (EC 2.1.1.-), p-hydroxycinnamate: CoA ligase (EC 6.2.1.12), cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase (EC 1.1.1.-) and peroxidase (EC 1.11.1.7). The activities of the four first-named enzymes in the compression wood of Thuja orientalis L. and Metasequoia glyptostroboides Hu et Cheng were 2.8±1.4-fold and 2.6±1.5-fold higher than those in opposite wood, respectively, whereas peroxidase had the same level of activity in either type of wood. On the other hand, no differences were observed in the activities of the five enzymes between tension and opposite woods of Robinia pseudoacacia L. These findings are well in accord with the chemical structure of lignin in the compression and tension woods of the three species studied: high content of lignin rich in condensed units in compression wood, and little difference in lignin between tension and opposite woods.

    Notes: Abstract Crystal and molecular structures of (1:1) molecular complexes of N,N′,N″,N″-tetramethyl-2, 11, 20, 29-tetraaza [3.3.3.3] paracyclophane (1) with CHCl3, CH2Cl2, CH3CN and CO2 are reported. The macrocycle has square-box structure, giving hydrophobic cavity surrounded by four benzene rings. The guest molecules are included in the cavity. The uncomplexed1 was found to have a rectangular form, indicating large conformational flexibility of1. In solution,1 is achiral because rapid R⇌S interconversion, but in solid, the macrocyclic conformation is frozen as “R”-conformer or “S”-conformer. The macrocycles with the same chirality are stacked alongb-axis to form chiral molecular columns, “R”-colums or “S”-columns. Complexes of1 crystallize differently depending on the guest molecules. “R”-columns (“S”-columns) packed alonga-axis produce “R”-layers (“S”-layers), which are further packed alongc-axis using “R”-layer to “R”-layer contact (RR) or SS and RS or SR. The crystals of1·CHCl3 are formulated as--RRR--=[R]n (Type I, chiral) and those of1·CH3CN or1·CO2 and1·CH2Cl2 are represented by [RS]n (Type IIA, racemic) and [RRSS]n (Type IIB, racemic), respectively.
