Notes: Fluorescence, CD, absorption, and 1H-nmr studies are reported for complexes of 7-amino-actinomycin D with deoxydinucleotides, deoxytetranucleotides, and poly(dG-dC)· poly(dG-dC). The optical spectra for the 7-amino-actinomycin D complex with pdG-dC, pdG-dC-dG-dC and pdC-dG-dC-dG are similar in shape to the 7-amino-actinomycin D complex with either DNA or poly(dG-dC). The changes in the 1H chemical shifts of the 7-amino-actinomycin D and the pdG-dC resonances that accompany complex formation show that 7-amino-actinomycin D forms a minature intercalated complex with two pdG-dC molecules. The magnitudes of the induced chemical shifts for the 7-amino-actinomycin D complex formation with pdG-dC are similar to, but slightly different from, the induced chemical shifts which are obtained when actinomycin D forms a minature intercalated complex with two pdG-dC molecules. The pdN-dG dinucleotides (N = C, A, or T) form stacked complexes with 7-amino-actinomycin D. The presence of the 7-amino-group results in a larger dimerization constant (in aqueous solution) for 7-amino-actinomycin D [KD(6°C) = 4.4 × 103M-1], as compared to actinomycin D [KD(6°C) = 1.7 × 103M-1]; the chemical shifts which accompany dimer formation indicate that the chromophores stack in an inverted manner. Intercalation of 7-amino-actinomycin D into minature double helices, as well as into calf thymus DNA, poly(dG-dC)·poly(dG-dC), and poly(dA-dC)·poly(dG-dT), results in an enhancement of the relative fluorescence intensity and a shift in both the absorbance and corrected emission spectra.

Notes: This paper describes a novel application of thermomechanical analysis. Observation and measurement of the thermal recovery of stresses induced in oriented PVC by stretching at elevated temperature is achieved by the modification of a commercial TMA instrument. Employment of an electronic signal differentiation system, in combination with this instrument, permits the simultaneous recording of the rate of shrinkage as a function of temperature. Specific examples are given which demonstrate the performance of the instrument and illustrate its application to problems of practical interest, such as effects of stretching and annealing conditions on shrinkage behavior.

Notes: When purified potato starch granules are heated in the presence of limited amounts of water (less than 1.5 H2O: starch, w/w), two endothermic transitions are observed by differential scanning calorimetry. The lower temperature endotherm is always observed at a fixed temperature, 66°C; it is the only endotherm observed when excess water is present. The higher temperature endotherm is observed at increasing temperatures as the water content is decreased. The size of this endotherm decreases with water content. The appearance of the higher temperature endotherm allows the determination of the stoichiometry for full hydration of starch, 14 H2O/hexose unit. The shift of the higher temperature endotherm is interpreted as the lowering of the melting point of starch crystallites by solvent water.

Notes: Numerous simple compounds have been shown to be capable of accelerating the photo-oxidation of polyethylene upon exposure to wavelengths near 300 nanometers. Probable mechanisms of photo-initiation by the principal classes of degradation-promoting additives are discussed.

Notes: A segmented polyether urethane was used as the blood contacting surface in a series of 10 heart assist devices implanted in calves for periods up to 35 weeks. At termination, each was examined to correlate blood compatibility and device performance with surface properties, chemical purity, physical stability and affinity for lipid absorption.

Notes: Several N-vinylarylamines have been prepared by direct N-vinylation of arylamine salts with acetylene at atmospheric pressure. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra of the various N-vinylarylamines were recorded and chemical shift assignments were made for the first time. The vinyl protons of the enamines generally exhibit an ABX pattern. The electron-rich monomers are sensitive to acid-catalyzed hydrolysis in a wet solvent. Polymerizations of the monomers were carried out at low temperatures with phosphorous pentafluoride as an initiator. It was found that PF5 generated directly from thermal decomposition of p-chlorobenzenediazonium hexafluorophosphate is useful in the preparation of an extremely high-molecular-weight poly(N-vinylcarbazole) (Mw = 3 × 106) with a narrow molecular weight distribution (MWD = 2.1). The polymerizability of N-vinylarylamines appears to vary with the amine functional groups of the monomers. N-vinylarylamine containing a planar amine moiety such as carbazole forms a higher-molecular-weight polymer than the monomers with the nonplanar bulky amine groups.
