Notes: Abstract Diffuse-reflectance Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopic (DRIFT) microanalysis (10 μg samples) of a selected series of flavonoids was studied, comparing to transmission FT-IR spectroscopic analysis of the same samples at the mg level. DRIFT was shown to be a useful, sample-saving and reliable IR technique for the structural analysis and compound identification of the mainSilybum genus 3-OH-flavonolignans (silybin, isosilybin, silydianin, silychristin and isosilychristin) and the dihydroflavonol taxifolin.

Notes: Anionic polymerization of p-triphenylgermylstyrene (1a) and p-tributylgermylstyrene (1b) were investigated under high vacuum conditions (≈10-6 mbar). Both 1a and 1b were readily polymerized with sodium naphthalide, potassium naphthalide, or α-methylstyrylsodium oligomers to form “living polymers”. The addition of α-methylstyrene to these living systems gave the triblock copolymer, poly(α-methylstyrene-b-p-triphenylgermylstyrene-b-α-methylstyrene). Both monomers were also polymerized radically with AIBN as initiator. Some physical properties of the resulting polymers were examined.

Notes: This work reports the synthesis of a novel polymeric organic-inorganic hybrid. The inorganic component is a silica network obtained by controlled hydrolysis of tetraethyl orthosilicate via sol-gel process and the organic counterpart is partially deacetylated chitin (CHI). The resulting polymer hybrids were homogeneous transparent film forming glassy materials being compatible through a wide composition range. Simultaneous thermal analysis of a CHI/silica 1:1 mixture confirms the intermolecular complex formation between organic and inorganic polymers.

Notes: The copolymerization of β-pinene with styrene oxide (SO) and β-pinene with N-vinylpyrrolidone (VP) was investigated by using SnCl4 in dichloromethane diluent at low temperature. Monomer reactivity ratios were evaluated for both copolymers at -80°C; these are r1(SO) = 2.979 and r2(β-pinene) = 0.002 and r1(VP) = 0.096 and r2(β-pinene) = 0.294.

Notes: The Cd(II) and Hg(II) complexes of 4(1H)-quinazolinone-2,3-dihydro-2-thioxo (1) and the free ligand were studied by 1D and 2D multinuclear magnetic resonance in solution and 13C cross polarization magic angle spinning NMR in the solid state. Compound 1 adopts only one of five possible tautomeric structures in solution, namely the thiouracyl-like structure. It was found that the metal atom is linked to two molecules of deprotonated 1 by N-1 and coordinated by the sulphur atom. The compounds retain the same structure in the solid state and in dimethyl sulphoxide solution.
