Notes: The manufacturing of toiletries is a complex procedure and many process routes are possible for a given formulation. In the past, considerable attention has been given to the design of manufacturing equipment but there has been relatively little appreciation of the influence of physicochemical interactions during processing. These interactions are likely to be particularly important during the manufacture of dispersions such as emulsions and pastes where phase and interfacial behaviour or particle interactions can be affected by the introduction of electrolytes or surface active species. For emulsions consisting of cetyl trimethyl ammonium chloride/long chain alcohol/water, the final rheological behaviour is governed by the formation of a ‘frozen’ lamellar structure in the continuous phase. The phase changes occurring during processing can significantly affect the degree of structure obtained. With powder dispersions, the rheology is affected by the introduction of surface active species due to deflocculation of the particles. Even in complex product systems such as toothpastes, these changes due to powder/detergent interactions are still apparent. Les interactions physico-chimiques dans les processus de fabrication

Notes: Chlorophyll formation in seven day old etiolated mung bean leaves was inhibited by CMU. The inhibition was reversed by feeding sucrose, or by leaving the cotyledons attached to the leaves. Photosynthesis appeared to contribute substrates for further chloroplast development soon after its commencement. When sucrose was fed in the presence of CMU at a range of light intensities, there was a distinct light induced promotion of chlorophyll formation at light intensities of 500–2000 lux. Treatment of the leaves with salicyl-aldoxime, an inhibitor of cyclic photophosphorylation indicated that this process could play an important part in chloroplast development.

Notes: Summary.  An H1N7 influenza A virus, isolated from pigs in England in 1992, was examined genetically to determine the characteristics and probable origin of the eight gene segments. Six of the RNA segments encoding PB2, PB1, PA, HA, NP and NS were related most closely to those of human viruses, whilst two of the RNA segments (NA and M) were related most closely to those of equine viruses. The HA gene was most similar to that of A/USSR/90/77 (H1N1) but amino acid differences suggested independent genetic drift. In contrast, there were relatively few changes in the NA and M genes compared to those of A/equine/Prague/1/56 (H7N7).

Notes: Abstract To prevent hot-cracking, austenitic stainless steel welds generally contain a small percent of delta ferrite. Although ferrite has been found to effectively prevent hot-cracking, it can lead to embrittlement of welds when exposed to elevated temperatures. The aging behavior of type-308 stainless steel weld has been examined over a range of temperatures 400–850

Notes: Summary The nucleotide sequences of the entire F genes of two isolates of the pigeon PMV-1 (PPMV-1) variant of Newcastle disease virus (NDV) were determined using RTPCR. The deduced amino acid sequences of the F0 protein showed four differences between isolate 760/83 which had been passaged 4 times in chickens and gave an intravenous pathogenicity index in chickens (IVPI) of 2.01 and isolate 1168/84 which had received six passages in chickens and had an IVPI of 0.00. The F genes of virus from two passage levels of isolate 1447/84, 0 with IVPI value 0.00 and six with IVPI value 0.58, were partially sequenced to cover the areas of variation between 760/83 and 1168/84. The two passage levels of 1447/84 showed identical sequences in these areas which in turn were identical to those of 760/83. It was concluded that the recorded differences in intravenous pathogenicity were unlikely to be associated with differences in the primary structure of the F0 protein. Phylogenetic comparisons of the F gene sequences of the two PPMV-1 viruses with those published for other NDV strains and isolates showed that the PPMV-1 viruses formed a new fourth lineage but were closely related to strain Warwick with which they presumably shared a common origin.

Notes: Summary The polypeptides of the avian paramyxoviruses: Newcastle disease virus (NDV-Herts) Yucaipa/chicken/California/60 (PMY), Bangor/Finch/N. Ireland/73 (Bangor) and Turkey/Wisconsin/68 (Ty/Wis) were separated by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis under reduced and non-reduced conditions. The protein patterns showed basic similarities among the 4 viruses; under reduced conditions seven polypeptides were revealed for each virus of which two were glycopolypeptides. Bangor virus and PMY polypeptides appeared identical but distinct differences between these two viruses, NDV-Herts and Ty/ Wis in the molecular weights of polypeptides and other migration properties were evident.

Notes: Summary Variations in the conditions used for disruption of purified virus involving differences in heat treatment and reducing agent concentration produced little affect on the polypeptide profiles of the Massachusetts 41 (M41) strain of avian infectious bronchitis virus obtained by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Comparisons of the structural polypeptides of 12 IBV isolates, consisting of M41, six serologically related viruses and representatives of five other serotypes, showed that the viruses could be placed in three groups on the molecular weights of the major glycopolypeptides. These were 31,000 and 86,000 for M41, the six related viruses and the serologically distinct SE17; 27,000 and 89,000 for Iowa 97 and Holte and 27,000 and 91,000 for Connecticut and T strain.

Notes: Summary Primary chick kidney cells were infected with avian infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) and examined by electron microscopy. Virus particles entered the cells by viropexis and distinction could be made between engulfment by cell processes (phagocytosis) and entry by micropinocytosis in coated transport vesicles. Virus maturation occurred by budding into either the cisternae of the endoplasmic reticulum or cytoplasmic vacuoles, and evidence was obtained to suggest that the viral surface projections could be attached during the budding process. Late in infection large numbers of virus particles were present, mainly in cytoplasmic vacuoles, and the majority were released by cell lysis. Release by fusion of vacuoles with the plasma membrane was also observed, and individual virions could be transported from the endoplasmic reticulum to the surface within coated vesicles.

Notes: Summary The structural polypeptides of twenty-three avian paramyxovriuses from five serotypes were examined by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in the presence of sodium dodecylsulphate under reducing and non-reducing conditions. All virus polypeptide profiles consisted of 7–10 polypeptides of which two were glycosylated. Some variation was seen in the profiles of viruses from the same serotype, but groups formed on the basis of their serological relationships in haemagglutination inhibition tests were identical to those formed on the basis of similarities in their polypeptide profiles.
