Notes: Abstract Previous studies have already demonstrated the protective role of vitamin C (ascorbic acid) in certain types of cancer. This study reports on the effects of vitamin C on arylamineN-acetyltransferase (NAT) activity and DNA adduct formation in a human bladder tumor cell (T24) line. The activity of NAT was measured using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), by assaying for the amounts of acetylated 2-aminofluorene (AF) and p-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) and the remaining amounts of AF and PABA. T24 cells were used for examining NAT activity and carcinogen–DNA adduct formation. The results demonstrated that NAT activity and 2-aminofluorene–DNA adduct formation in T24 cells were inhibited and decreased by vitamin C in a dose-dependent manner. The apparent kinetic parameters (apparent values ofK m and V max) from T24 cells were also determined with and without vitamin C cotreatment. The data also indicated that vitamin C decreased the apparent values of K m and V max from T24 cells.

Notes: Abstract Abnormal function of p53 is commonly associated with various cancer formations. High-grade and late-stage bladder cancers have been reported to have mutated or become inactive p53 when using immunohistochemical stains. Recently, p53 codon 72 polymorphism was extensively studied to determine the risk factors responsible for cancer formation. There was a general population of codon 72 sequence polymorphism of the wild type p53. A single base change from G to C caused the alteration of amino acid residue 72 from arginine to proline. The arginine form is considered to be a significant risk factor in the development of cancer. However, various reports had indicated discrepancies with regard to this polymorphism; some showed no significant difference between the control and cancer groups, while other series were associated with high risks in the proline form homozygotes. To resolve the undefined distribution of this polymorphism in bladder cancers, 58 patients with bladder cancer were enrolled onto this study. When checked using the Chi-squared test (P=0.952) there were no differences between the control subjects and bladder cancer patients in the distribution of polymorphism. However, proline form homozygotes were more frequently found in the invasive group than the non-invasive group by Fisher's exact test (25% and 2.9%, respectively, P 〈 0.001). More than 70% of the non-invasive bladder cancers were the arginine form homozygotes. This result is consistent with those reported for hepatocellular carcinoma that showed a history of chronic liver disease and proline form homozygotes in a report by Yu et al. Our data suggest that proline form homozygotes are associated with invasive bladder cancer.

Notes: Abstract The problem of robust tracking and model following for a class of linear dynamical systems with time-varying uncertain parameters and disturbances is considered. A class of continuous (nonlinear) state feedback controllers is proposed for robust tracking of dynamical signals. The proposed robust tracking controllers can guarantee that the tracking error decreases asymptotically to zero in the presence of uncertain parameters and disturbances. A procedure for designing such a zero tracking state feedback controller is also introduced. Finally, a numerical example is given to demonstrate the validity of the results.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, the problem of the robust stabilization for a class of uncertain linear dynamical systems with time-varying delay is considered. By making use of an algebraic Riccati equation, we derive some sufficient conditions for robust stability of time-varying delay dynamical systems with unstructured or structured uncertainties. In our approach, the only restriction on the delay functionh(t) is the knowledge of its upper boundh −. Some analytical methods are employed to investigate these stability conditions. Since these conditions are independent of the delay, our results are also applicable to systems with perturbed time delay. Finally, a numerical example is given to illustrate the use of the sufficient conditions developed in this paper.

Notes: Abstract The problem of the decentralized robust control for a class of large-scale interconnected nonlinear dynamical systems with input interconnection and external interconnection perturbations is considered. Based on the stabilizability of each nominal isolated subsystem (i.e., the isolated subsystem in the absence of interconnection perturbations), a class of decentralized local state feedback controllers is proposed, and some sufficient conditions are derived by making use of the Lyapunov stability criterion such that uncertain large-scale interconnected systems can be stabilized asymptotically by these decentralized state feedback controllers. For large-scale systems with only input interconnection perturbations, such decentralized controllers become a class of decentralized stabilizing state feedback controllers. That is, the decentralized stability of such large-scale systems can be guaranteed always by using the decentralized state feedback controllers proposed in the paper. Finally, a numerical example is given to demonstrate the validity of the results.

Notes: Abstract In this paper, a new and simple approach whereby we derive several sufficient conditions on robust stabilizability for a class of uncertain dynamical systems with time delay is presented. Some analytical methods and the Bellman-Gronwall inequality are employed to investigate these sufficient conditions. The notable features of the results obtained are their simplicity in testing the stability of uncertain dynamical systems with time delay and their clarity in giving insight into system analysis. Finally, several numerical examples are given to demonstrate the utilization of the results.

Notes: Abstract The problem of the robust stability of large-scale dynamical systems including delayed states and parameter perturbations in interconnections is considered. By using algebraic Riccati equations and some analytical methods, some sufficient conditions on linear decentralized state feedback controllers are derived so that the systems remain stable in the presence of delayed states and parameter perturbations. Such conditions give some bounds on the perturbations of interconnections with delayed states and uncertain parameters, and result in a quantitative measures of robustness for large-scale dynamical systems including delayed states and uncertain parameters in interconnections. The results obtained in this paper are applicable not only to large-scale systems with multiple time-varying delays, but also to large-scale systems without exact knowledge of the delays, i.e., large-scale systems with uncertain delays.
