Notes: Chaotic phenomena of a periodic ion-acoustic solitons system that is composed of a series of ion-acoustic solitons have been observed in a double-plasma device. Periodic ion-acoustic solitons become unstable by the energy gain and energy loss of the solitons, and they become chaotic. Taking account of a pair of solitons in the system, the front soliton gains energy from the reflected ions from the rear soliton, which is controllable by the rear soliton amplitude or the interval between the solitons. The energy loss of solitons results from collisions with neutral particles that vary with changing gas pressure. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Multimode solitons are observed to be excited in an ion-beam–plasma system. But, the excitation of some mode solitons of these is found to be suppressed under a certain condition depending on the density and velocity of a low-energy ion beam, produced by the applied negative pulse. Furthermore, weak interaction between the slow-beam soliton and ion-acoustic soliton is also observed to cause small time lags in their trajectories on the distance–time plane. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We theoretically investigate the internal rotations of the methyl group in methyl-azabenzenes, such as o- and m-methylpyridines, 2-methylpyrazine, 4-methylpyrimidine, 4-methylpyridadine, and 4-methyl-1,2,3-triazine in the ground, excited, and anionic states. The calculated rotational barriers reproduce well the experimental data. Orbital pictures are given for the barrier changes by excitation and electron attachment. An idea of π*–σ* hyperconjugation is applied for a comprehensive interpretation of the barrier changes. A correlation is found between the rotational barriers and the splitting of the lowest and next-lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Aims : Most lymphomas arising in the nasal cavity are thought to be of natural killer (NK) cell origin. However, some reports indicate that T- and B-cell lymphomas may also primarily arise in the nasal cavity. We therefore studied lymphomas arising in the nasal cavity both histologically and immunohistochemically. Methods and results : Of the 32 cases investigated, 20 cases were also available as fresh frozen specimens. We diagnosed 31 cases as extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma and one as plasmacytoma. The neoplastic cells were immunoreactive for CD3 (polyclonal) 31/31, LMP-1 12/31, CD20 (L26) 0/31, granzyme B 30/31, TIA-1 30/30, CD56 (123C3) 29/31, CD4 0/31 and CD8 3/31. In situ hybridization for Epstein–Barr virus-encoded small RNA-1 (EBER-1) was detected in 31/31. In frozen tissue sections, neoplastic cells mostly showed CD3 (Leu4)–, CD4 (Leu3a)–, CD5 (Leu1)–, CD8 (Leu2)–, CD16 (Leu11)–, CD56 (Leu19)+, βF1–, TCRδ1–, perforin+, CD94+ phenotypes. These immunohistochemical findings indicate their NK cell origin. In three cases, neoplastic cells were positive for CD8. In one of these cases, neoplastic cells were positive for CD8β and Vα24, suggesting their NKT-cell origin. Conclusions : Our present study indicates that primary lymphomas arising in the nasal cavity are mostly of NK cell derivation. Our present study also suggests that a small number of cases are derived from NKT-cells.

Notes: Background and objective:  Peripheral blood monocytes are a heterogeneous population, with phenotypes that change on activation or differentiation. Most of the monocytes express lipopolysaccharide (LPS) receptor, CD14 intensely, and do not express Fc gamma receptor III, CD16 (CD14++CD16– monocytes). But monocytes expressing CD16 with reduced CD14 (CD14+CD16+ monocytes) increase in inflammatory diseases as well as sepsis and bacteremia in hemodialysis patients. CD45RA is expressed on activated monocytes, and is regarded as an activation marker of peripheral blood monocytes. The purpose of this study was to determine the phenotypic and functional alteration of monocytes in periodontitis patients. Methods:  Peripheral blood was collected from 33 aggressive periodontitis patients (22 females, 11 males), 55 chronic periodontitis patients (35 females, 20 males) and 30 healthy subjects (16 females, 14 males), and the expression of CD14, CD16 and CD45RA on monocytes was determined using flow cytometry. The production of interleukin-6 (IL-6) by CD16+ and CD16– monocytes stimulated with LPS from Escherichia coli and Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans was also examined using flow cytometry. Results:  The percentage of CD14+CD16+ monocytes was significantly increased in chronic periodontitis patients. Percentage of monocytes expressing CD45RA was significantly increased in aggressive periodontitis patients compared to healthy subjects. CD16+ and CD16– monocytes produced IL-6 in response to LPS from E. coli and A. actinomycetemcomitans, and the percentage of IL-6 producing cells was higher in CD16+ monocytes than CD16– monocytes, suggesting that CD14+CD16+ monocytes represent a hyper-reactive phenotype. Conclusions:  The present study demonstrated that CD14+CD16+ monocytes and CD45RA+ monocytes were increased in chronic and aggressive periodontitis, respectively. These findings suggest that alteration of monocytes in periodontitis patients could be evaluated by monitoring the surface expression of CD14, CD16 and CD45RA on monocytes.

Notes: The reproducibility of tooth tapping frequencies was measured in young and elderly dentate subjects. Six rates of tapping, i.e. 40, 60, 90, 120, 160 and 200 times per min, were practised to the accompaniment of a metronome for 15s before recording. After a 15-s break, subjects were asked to reproduce the same rate of tapping without metronome accompaniment, and these movements were recorded. It was determined that the young subjects regulated tooth tapping frequencies by controlling velocity of mandibular movement. On the other hand, the elderly subjects regulated tooth tapping frequency by controlling opening width.

Notes: Mandibular reaction time was measured in young and elderly volunteers. Each subject was instructed to open the jaw from the closed position and to close the jaw from the open position as quickly as possible after perceiving an auditory or visual signal. The reaction time of the elderly subjects to both signals was significantly slower than that of the young subjects. This was due almost entirely to prolongation of the premotor time component. There was no difference in the maximum velocity of the jaw movement between the two groups of subjects.

Notes: Thirteen healthy adults performed sustained clenching at 50% maximum clenching level judged electromyographically. Electromyograms were recorded from both anterior temporal and masseter muscles during clenching and the silent period latency and duration were measured. As the result of muscle fatigue, the silent period latency significantly decreased, whilst the duration significantly increased up to 3 min from the beginning of clenching.

Notes: Mandibular movement and masticatory performance were evaluated in the edentulous patients with an experimental denture using posterior artificial teeth of different occlusal schemes in order to determine the criterion for the selection of posterior artificial teeth.Lower masticatory performance was observed with non-anatomic posterior teeth than with semi-anatomic or anatomic ones regardless of the condition of residual ridge and inclination of the horizontal condylar guidance. The value of the lateral component of the masticatory cycle was closely related to the inclination of the cusp and the value of masticatory performance. This suggested strongly that the component could be a criteria for the selection of the type of the artificial posterior teeth.
