    Notes: Abstract 1. Phage-like particles were found in the supernatants of cultures of strains of Myxococcus xanthus, M. virescens and M. fulvus. The largest number of such particles was associated with M. virescens V2. Most of the particles were similar in morphology to the virulent Myxococcus phage, MX-1. 2. Several new phages were isolated from soil and animal droppings. A new phage was isolated from cultures of M. virescens V2. All resembled phage MX-1 in morphology and were related to phage MX-1 serologically. One of these phage, øm, was characterized by fractionation of its proteins by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and by analysis of the restriction fragments of its DNA. The very close relatedness with MX-1 was confirmed by these techniques. Phage øm, was found to exist in a state of pseudolysogeny with strains of M. virescens and M. fulvus. 3. Two types of bacteriocin-like activity were found associated with Myxococcus strains. In one case, the activity was extracted from chloroform-killed or from sonicated cells. In the second case it was associated with extracellular material. Strains of Salmonella and Cytophaga were found to be good indicators for this latter activity. These strains were found to be killed by phage MX-1. 4. The significance of these data for origin of the phages of myxococci are discussed and it is proposed that MX-1 and the newly isolated phages may be virulent mutants of a family of lysogenic phages.

    Notes: Abstract 1. Bacteriophage MX-1 is a virulent DNA phage whose hosts include strains of Myxococcus xanthus, M. fulvus and M. virescens. DNA was extracted from purified phage preparations. The molecular weight of phage DNA was measured by sedimentation-velocity and by rate-zonal ultracentrifugation. The apparent molecular weight was found to vary for reasons discussed in the text. From ratezonal ultracentrifugation, using calibrated sucrose gradients, the molecular weight was calculated to be 149 (± 22)×106 daltons. The base composition of the DNA was estimated by different methods and was found to be 50–52% (G+C). The DNA demonstrated an anomalous thermal denaturation profile in dilute buffer. Denatured DNA was fractionated by ion-exchange chromatography and by buoyant-density centrifugation. No significant strand separation was obtained and it was concluded that overall base compositions of the two strands are very similar. 2. DNA from bacteriophage MX-1 was hydrolysed with restriction endonucleases R. EcoRI, R. EcoRII and R. HindIII. The restriction fragments were catalogued and their apparent molecular weights calculated from electrophoresis gels calibrated with fragments from the DNA of coliphage λ. From the total fragments obtained with nuclease R. EcoRI, the minimum apparent molecular weight of MX-1 DNA was found to be 130×106 daltons.

    Notes: The investigation characterizes the rate-dependent uniaxial stress-strain behavior of several polymeric materials. The characterization is done using both a mechanical model with rate-dependent elements and a general nonlinear theory of viscoelasticity. Experimental data were gathered on a Laminac polyester resin, and further data on polycarbonate and PMMA were collected from the work of Brinson. The mechanical model could be called a modified Bingham type, while the nonlinear viscoelastic theory was the single integral constitutive model proposed by Bernstein, Kearsley, and Zapas. Results from the mechanical model gave good agreement with the experimental data, the maximum difference being about 10%. The BKZ theory predictions modeled the data to within 5-12% average error.

    Notes: There is concern whether in vivo corrosion of chromium-cobalt alloys releases ions containing trivalent [Cr(III)] or hexavalent [Cr(VI)] chromium. The question arises from indications that Cr(VI) is far more biologically active than Cr(III). Using a previously developed microsphere implant model, specimens of F-75 chromium-cobalt-molybdenum alloy were implanted in rats for periods up to 120 days. Blood and urine were collected at intervals during the study. Significant postoperative serum and urine chromium concentration elevations were observed. In addition, weight gain inhibition, lung morbidity, and animal mortality, related to the implant surface area to animal body weight ratio (SA/BW), were observed. Comparison of measured chromium serum concentrations with those concentrations found by others to be biologically active in tissue culture studies strongly suggests the release of Cr(VI) in this study.

    Notes: A pyrolytic carbon coating was applied to F-75 chromium-cobalt-molybdenum alloy in an effort to reduce the release of corrosion products in vivo. After intramuscular implantation in the rat, a complex pattern of serum and urine concentration elevations of chromium, cobalt, and nickel was seen. The carbon-coated implants released more chromium and cobalt than uncoated controls, as seen by significantly elevated metal concentrations in serum and urine. Animals receiving carbon-coated implants showed a high rate of recurrent implant site inflammation. Neoplastic infiltration of the implant site occurred in 3 out of 24 animals with coated implants, but not in any of the 16 animals which received either uncoated F-75 microsphere or poly(ethylene) particulate implants.

    Notes: This report presents the project for the development of a combined facility consisting of a high spatial resolution soft x-ray scanning photoelectron microscope (SPEM) and a scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) that is going to be built in an ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) station on one of the undulator beam lines at ELETTRA, Trieste. The photon microprobe for SPEM will be generated using a zone plate diffraction optic. A special design of a spherical grating monochromator will provide the source for illuminating the zone plate. The emitted photoelectrons will be detected and analysed using a high-energy resolution hemispherical analyser with a large acceptance angle. The performance of the SPEM is projected to be as follows: (1) a photon spot size on the sample of ∼50 × 50 nm2;(2) a tunable photon energy range of 200-800 eV, with an energy resolving power of 3000 at the carbon K-edge;(3) a photon flux in the spot that is 〉 109 photons s-1 (0.1% body wt.)-1.The projected performance of the STM instrument ensures a lateral resolution better than 2 Å. The combination of SPEM and STM techniques will enable chemical and structural mapping within the same microscopic areas of the sample surface. Descriptions of the main beam line components together with some examples of possible applications of this unique tool are included in the paper.

Correlation between the magnitudes of 4J3exo-5exo and the inductive linear free energy σI has been obtained. 4-Substituted bornanone nitrimines exhibit diminished values of 4J3exo-5exo with respect to the parent ketone.

    Notes: A testing program was conducted to determine the time-temperature response of the principal compliances of a unidirectional graphite/epoxy composite. It is shown that two components of the compliance matrix are time and temperature independent. In addition, the compliance matrix is found to be symmetric for the viscoelastic composite. The time-temperature superposition principle is used to determine shift factors. It is shown that shift factors are independent of fiber orientation for fiber angles that vary from 10 to 90° with respect to the load direction.

    Notes: The kinetics of the reaction between benzene-1,2-diol(catechol) and hexachloroiridate (IV) have been measured in aqueous acidic perchlorate solutions by the stopped-flow method. The reaction is second order overall, and first order in each reactant. A reverse reaction also occurs, but it is much slower than the forward process. Observed rate constants are dependent on acidity, but the variation can be attributed to activity rather than mechanistic effects. The reaction appears to proceed predominantly by an outer sphere electron transfer mechanism, yielding o-benzoquinone and hexachloroiridate (III), although monoaquopentachloroiridate (III) is formed also at the higher [catechol]/[IrCl62-]ratios.
