Description / Table of Contents: Extremely high values (ca. 6.108) have been received for the molecular weights of native dextrans by measurements in the ultracentrifuge and by light scattering. These values are the highest ever obtained for dissolved molecules. We have now determined the mol.wt. of native dextrans by five different methods (kinetic calculations, investigations of the branching reaction, fractionation on a thermo column, endgroup determination and velocity of depolymerisation by ultrasonic radiation). and arrived to much smaller values. For dextrans synthesized at low substrate concentrations the mol. wt. is about 250000, for those at higher substrat concentrations it decreases to around 70000.It is assumed, that the high values for the mol.wts. are in reality partical weights of associations with a very high stability.

Notes: Macromolecular chelating agents possessing high selectivity for rare metal ions have been synthetized. One of these, with the complexing group of glyoxal bis-2-mercaptoanil, is suitable for selective enrichment of gold from sea-water, while another is suitable for copper and uranium. - The enrichment of metallic ions in nature is discussed, taking hemocyanin as an example. - Both stereochemistry and isomerism, as well as cyclic conjugation during chelate formation, may influence the selectivity of complexing agents. The quasi-aromatic properties of chelates are discussed.
