Notes: Abstract The effect of lithium on serotonin (5-HT)-mediated responses in the brain was assessed by measuring changes in the prolactin (PRL) and growth hormone (GH) responses to l-tryptophan (LTP) in eight normal subjects. On the 4th day of lithium treatment the PRL responses were significantly enhanced, and this enhancement was still apparent after 20 days' treatment. In contrast, GH responses to LTP were not altered. Lithium had no effect on platelet 5-HT content, platelet imipramine binding and platelet 5-HT receptor binding. The ability of lithium to enhance some aspects of brain 5-HT function may be important in its mode of action in manic-depressive illness and may be particularly relevant to its potentiation of the antidepressant effect of tricyclic antidepressants.

Notes: Abstract Experiments were carried out using rats to investigate whether 5-HT1A neural mechanisms are involved in lithium-induced conditioned taste aversion (CTA). We found that the 5-HT1A antagonists p-MPPI and pindolol caused CTA similar to that produced by LiCl. The 5-HT1A agonist 8-OH-DPAT counteracted lithium-induced CTA. Pindolol dose-dependently abolished effects of 8-OH-DPAT on LiCl-induced CTA. These findings support the notion that lithium has antagonistic actions on 5-HT1A receptors. Inhibition of 5-HT synthesis by PCPA failed, however, to prevent lithium-induced CTA. Evidently, mechanisms other than those governed solely by 5-HT are also involved in lithium-induced CTA.

Notes: Summary The effects of lithium on monoamine oxidase (MAO) in rat brain were studied in the presence of each enantiomer of tranylcypromine [(+)- and (−)-TCP]. The (+)-enantiomer was 25 times more potent than its antipode as MAO inhibitor. Lithium enhanced the inhibitory effect of (−)-TCP on MAO, but it did not affect actions of the (+)-enantiomer. Moreover, lithium influenced the stereo selective index for MAO, which suggests that lithium altered conformational features of the enzyme.

Notes: Higher chained alkyl cyanoacrylates have potential to function efficiently as space filling, hydrophobic, viscoelastic, biocompatible, and rapidly polymerizing bone adhesives. Hence they may be useful in applications where a void has to be filled, such as replacement of the intervertebral disc. To assess their applicability as space filling material in such an pplication, three alkyl cyanoacrylates; methoxyethyl cyanoacrylate, isobutyl cyanoacrylate, and isoamyl cyanoacrylate have been evaluated in this study. The bonding strength of these cyanoacrylates to bone in a space filling situation have been measured. The results indicate the bond strength of isoamyl cyanoacrylate (0.13 MPa) to be significantly (p 〈 0.05) lower compared with methoxyethyl cyanoacrylate (0.33 MPa) and isobutyl cyanoacrylate (0.37 MPa). There was no significant difference in the bond strengths of isobutyl cyanoacrylate and methoxyethyl cyanoacrylate.

Notes: Graft copolymerization of collagen with N,N,N′,N′-tetra (2-hydroxypropyl) ethylene diamine methacrylate (THPEDM) was carried out in an aqueous medium using potassium persulfate as the radical initiator. Collagen-g-poly(THPEDM) was characterized by the percent yield and the copper chloride test. The percentage of grafting was determined as functions of concentration of monomer, concentration initiator, reaction time, and temperature.

Notes: This paper describes an investigation into the degradation of a purified epoxide based on the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A hardened with p,p′-diaminodiphenylmethane. The method used was that of hot-wire pyrolysis followed by gas chromatography. Special attention was given to the problem of solid residues formed on the pyrolyzer tube, and evidence was found that these probably contain oligomers. Resonance-stabilized free radicals also appear to be formed, and evidence is found to support the idea of dehydration during degradation, originally put forward by Lee. An attempt, based on first principles, is made to explain the degradation of epoxides, using evidence from previous work as well as that described in this paper.

Notes: The thermal degradation of aromatic polyimides in nitrogen at 700°C was studied using pyrolysis gas chromatography, infrared spectroscopy, and radiochemical techniques. Degradation mechanisms were postulated to account for the breakdown products found and to explain variations in the ratio of carbon monoxide to carbon dioxide.

Notes: The microstructure of polyepichlorohydrin was directly studied by high-field 13C-NMR. Spectral features were found that correspond to different tacticities. By using curve deconvolution techniques, the different tacticities were assigned and quantified.
