Notes: The corrosion inhibition of mild steel by some naturally occuring substance was evaluated in absence and presence of 600 and 1200 mg H2S/l in 3% NaCl aqueous solution and pH of 3 and temperature of 25 °C. These naturally occurring substance included the water extracts, coumarines and fatty matters extracts of some Egyptian plants. These plants included:(1) Nigella Sativa (Family Ranunculacease) (Extract (1), 2) Coriandrum Sativum (Family Umbelliferea) (Extract II), 3) Ricinus communis (Family Euphorbiaceae) (Extract III). The galvanostatic anodic and cathodic polarization measurements were used for studying the corrosion behavior of mild steel and evaluation of the percentage inhibition of the undertesting extracts of these three plants and also preparation of fatty matters and coumarin fractions were mentioned.

Notes: The inhibition of mild steel corrosion/in 0.5 M HCl solution by amphoteric surfactants (which contain both an anionic and a cationic moiety in the same molecule) of general formula: (R alkyl group of C10, 11, 12, 13, 15 and 17) is shown to confirm Langmuir's adsorption isotherms. At a given concentration of surfactants, the inhibiting action increases with the increase of carbon chain length. The influence of both inductive and steric hindrance effects of methylene groups in -R on the inhibition efficiency has also been mentioned.

Notes: Experimental breakthrough curves were determined for a liquid full and a trickle bed reactor in which benzene was adsorbed from water on small activated carbon particles at 298°K and 1 atm. The step function of benzene was introduced into the water feed and the response measured in the liquid effluent. Benzene transfer also occurred from the liquid feed to the gaseous feed of pure helium.Moment analysis of data for liquid full conditions indicated that the first moment of the response curve could be used to obtain the adsorption equilibrium constant K for benzene on activated carbon. Comparison of results obtained by this new method with the K value determined from static equilibrium runs demonstrated the validity of the moment theory.Analysis of the response curves for trickle bed operation showed that the liquid-to-gas mass transfer coefficient (ka)L could be evaluated from either the zero or first moment. Results were obtained in both the trickling flow and pulse flow regimes. Values of (ka)L in the pulse flow regime, which were not heretofore available were sharply higher than those for trickle flow.

Notes: A sample of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) and a polar plasticizer consisting of dioctyl phthalate (DOP) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP) was prepared and found to possess inconvenient electrical properties (permittivity, dielectric loss, and conductivity). Different samples of PVC compositions were formulated from the PVC-DOP-DBP system and also variable proportions of a copolymer of 1-octadecene-maleic anhydride or its hexadecylester. Lead stearate as a heat stabilizer and kaolin as a filler were added. The effect of copolymer structure on the electrical properties of the PVC-DOP-DBP system was studied to obtain a plasticized PVC of good electrical insulation character. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The reaction of a ratio of 1 mole of 5-chloro-3-methyl-1-phenyl pyrazolo-4[2(4)]-dimethine cyanine (1a,b) or (5-chloro-4-formyl-3-methyl-1-phenylpyrazole) 2 with 2 moles of an appropriate 2(4)-heterocyclic quaternary salt afforded the novel pentamethine cyanine dyes (3a-3e). Other reactions of 2 with heterocyclic nitrogen bases, followed by condensation of the newly formed quaternary nitrogen salts (4a-4c) with methoheterocyclic iodide salts provided the corresponding unsymmetrical dimethine cyanine dyes (5a-5g). The new pentamethine and dimethine cyanine dyes were identified by elemental analyses and IR and 1H-NMR spectral data. The visible absorption spectra of some selected dyes were investigated in pure and mixed solvents as well as in universal buffer solutions. The measure of the variation of absorbance with pH was utilized for the determination of the pKa values for compounds 3b, 3d, 3e, 5e, and 5f, and these data are discussed. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Notes: Reaction of benzonitrilium N-phenylimide 3a with dibenzalacetone 1 yielded a mixture of the mono- and biscycloadducts 8a and 11a in a 1:1 ratio. A similar reaction of 1 with ethoxycarbonylnitrilium N-phenylimide 3b afforded a mixture of the cycloadducts 7b, 8b, and 12b in a 1:3:6 ratio, respectively. The structures of these products were established by spectral analyses and chemical transformations. The results invalidate the previously reported structure 4a assigned for the biscycloadduct isolated from the reaction of 3a with 1. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Theoretical and experimental treatments of the shape of Fizeau fringes crossing a fibre of Trilobal-shaped cross-section assumed to consist of a single medium are presented. A New mathematical expression is derived and used to estimate the refractive indices and the birefringence of Perlon (polycaprolactam) fibre. The resulting data are used to calculate the polarizability per unit volume. Cauchy's dispersion constants, the isotropic refractive index and the variation of refractive index with temperature are reported. The results are in agreement with previously published data. The data are illustrated by microinterferograms.

Notes: An approach to the problem of producing poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) graft copolymer exhibiting good mechanical properties and electrical resistance that suits its uses as an electrical insulator has been investigated. Graft copolymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) onto PVC using γ-radiation as initiator has been studied. PVC was chemically modified, and the effect of the change in its chemical and physical structure on its properties was investigated. In this grafting system, different solvents were tried and it was found that the most suitable diluent for the grafting of MMA onto PVC films is methanol. An appreciable improvement in tensile properties of the graft copolymer was achieved. The most suitable degree of grafting, concerning electrical insulation efficiency, was found to be near 80%. Gel determination in the graft copolymer was carried out, and a crosslinked network structure was formed. Increasing the crosslinking content in the graft copolymer leads to a decrease in the extent of swelling due to the less diffusivity of the solutions through such network structure.

Notes: The stress-strain (S/S) and the swelling equilibrium behavior in a series of ethylene propylene rubber (EPR) and ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) networks were investigated and the results were employed to evaluate the effects of varying the cure conditions on the crosslinking efficiency in these networks. The S/S curve of completely swollen vulcanizates is in agreement with the predictions of rubber elasticity theory, while that of dry or partially swollen vulcanizates is fully described by the Mooney-Rivlin equation. ϰ values determined in benzene were found to vary linearly with vr (vr = equilibrium volume fraction of rubber in swollen sample). Crosslinking efficiency, moles of crosslinks produced per moles of crosslinking agent used, ranges from 3.7 in peroxide-cured EPDM (55% wt ethylene and 2.6% unsaturation) to 0.15 in similarly cured EPR (43% ethylene). Efficiency in the latter system improves to 0.6 by addition of a coagent (sulfur) to the cure formula. Crosslinking efficiency in EPDM (55% ethylene) was found to increase in the order: peroxide- 〉 resin- 〉 sulfur-cured. In the EPDM sulfur vulcanizates, changing the terpolymer in the cure formula resulted in significant changes in the crosslinking efficiency.
