    Notes: Summary To disclose possible regulatory mechanisms, the potential difference across the peritubular cell membrane (PDpt) and intracellular activities of sodium (Na i + ), potassium (K i + ), calcium (Ca i 2+ ), bicarbonate (HCO 3i − ) and chloride (Cl i − ) have been traced continuously during inhibition of Na+/K+-ATPase with ouabain. Within 31±4 min following application of ouabain, PDpt decreases (from 57±2 mV) to half and K i + by 37.7±2.2 mmol/l (from 63.5±1.9 mmol/l), Na i + increases by 35.1±4.1 mmol/l (from 13.2±2.4 mmol/l), Ca i 2+ by 0.17 ± 0.2 µmol/l (from 0.09 µmol/l), HCO 3i − by 3.0±1.1 mmol/l (from 15.3±2.0 mmol/l) and Cl i − by 6.2±1.0 mmol/l (from 14.4±1.6 mmol/l). Within the same time the luminal and peritubular cell membrane resistances increase 45±15% and 53±17%, respectively. The increase of the resistances is mainly due to a decrease of K+ conductance, which in turn mainly accounts for the depolarisation of PDpt. Additional experiments demonstrate that the K+ conductance of the peritubular cell membrane is sensitive to the cell membrane potential difference and possibly linked to Na+/K+-ATPase activity. The decline of PDpt probably accounts for intracellular alkalinisation which in turn reduces Na+/H+ exchange. Na+-coupled transport of glucose and phenylalanine decrease in linear proportion to PDpt. The transport of these and probably of similar substances represents the main threat to electrolyte homeostasis of the cells.

    Notes: Abstract This paper introduces the application of Haar wavelets to the optimal control synthesis for linear time-varying systems. Based upon some useful properties of Haar wavelets, a special product matrix, a related coefficient matrix, and an operational matrix of backward integration are proposed to solve the adjoint equation of optimization. The results obtained by the proposed Haar approach are almost the same as those obtained by the conventional Riccati method.

    Notes: Abstract The state analysis and optimal control of time-varying discrete systems via Haar wavelets are the main tasks of this paper. First, we introduce the definition of discrete Haar wavelets. Then, a comparison between Haar wavelets and other orthogonal functions is given. Based upon some useful properties of the Haar wavelets, a special product matrix and a related coefficient matrix are proposed; also, a shift matrix and a summation matrix are derived. These matrices are very effective in solving our problems. The local property of the Haar wavelets is applied to shorten the calculation procedures.

    Notes: Three viscoplastic approaches are examined in this paper. First, the overstress viscoplastic models (i.e. the Perzyna model and the Duvaut-Lions model) are outlined. Next, a consistency viscoplastic approach is presented. In the consistency model a rate-dependent yield surface is employed while the standard Kuhn-Tucker conditions for loading and unloading remain valid. For this reason, the yield surface can expand and shrink not only by softening or hardening effects, but also by softening/hardening rate effects. A full algorithmic treatment is presented for each of the three models including the derivation of a consistent tangential stiffness matrix. Based on a limited numerical experience it seems that the consistency model shows a faster global convergence than the overstress approaches. For softening problems all three approaches have a regularising effect in the sense that the initial-value problem remains well-posed. The width of the shear band is determined by the material parameters and, if present, by the size of an imperfection. A relation between the length scales of the three models is given. Furthermore, it is shown that the consistency model can properly simulate the so-called S-type instabilities, which are associated with the occurrence of travelling Portevin-Le Chatelier bands. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

    Notes: A numerical model for simulating flow and transport of contaminants with variable density in fractured porous media is presented. The non-linearities arising from the density variation and the velocty-dependent dispersion terms have been handled by Picard method. It is shown that the contaminant transport in a fractured porous medium is initially dominated by fractures. However, with time increasing, the contaminant concentration in porous blocks increases, due to the leakage of contaminant from the fracture network to the porous blocks. It is also shown that the high density of contaminant has a greater effect on its transport in the fracture network than in the porous blocks. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
