Notes: Summary From 1977-1980, 11 patients with nonresectable esophageal carcinoma were treated by retrosternal gastric bypass with cervical esophagogastric anastomosis according to Akiyama. This procedure was indicated for cases in whom the tumor was not resectable because it extended into neighboring organs or the general condition of the patient was poor. Gastric bypass was not indicated in far advanced cases with metastases in the liver and the peritoneum and in tumors of the upper third of the esophagus. One patient died postoperatively; the others were able to swallow normal food after the 10th postoperative day. Radiation therapy of the remaining tumor was possible.
