    Notizen: A method for the quantitative analysis for oxide films on steels by means of glow discharge optical emission spectrometry (GDOS) was investigated. Effective optical emission yields for analysed elements were determined by measuring the emission intensities and sputtering rates of standard samples during discharging under constant conditions. The chemical composition in oxidized samples was obtained from the emission intensities and the effective emission yields, while the sputtered depth was calculated from the emission intensities and effective densities of elements. From measurements of the sputtering of magnetite the effective density for oxygen was estimated as 1820 kg m-3. It was shown that GDOS can be used to determine the quantitative composition and the thickness of the oxide layers on steels.

    Notizen: The high-temperature oxidation resistance property of MoSi2 coatings is strongly influenced by the chemical composition, density and structure of the deposit. The aim of this work is to determine the role of the deposition process in the microchemistry and microstructure of the coating. In order to achieve this task, we compare MoSi2 produced by LPPS (low-pressure plasma spraying) and conventional APPS (atmospheric pressure plasma spraying) techniques with the aid of a complementary use of characterization methods such as SEM, EPMA (electron probe microanalysis), CMA (computer-aided microanalysis), GDOS (glow discharge optical spectroscopy) and XPS. From the overall results it is evident that the application of plasma spraying under low pressure considerably improves MoSi2 layers. They are characterized by a higher density, with fewer pores and discontinuities, and have a more uniform chemical composition and a better coating-substrate interface.

    Notizen: The International Prototype of the Kilogram, which is the only artificial material defining one of the fundamental constants, has been reported to gain mass as time elapses after it is cleaned. The surface of a Pt-Ir alloy that has been used for the newer Kilogram prototypes was analysed by XPS and thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS) to investigate the cause of mass gain, its time dependence and the effect of the cleaning method. The main cause of the mass gain was found to be adsorption of carbon (in the form of hydrocarbons) and oxygen (as water) from the atmosphere. The amounts of the two contaminant elements were almost saturated 6 months after sample cleaning. Cleaning methods do not make a large difference to adsorption behaviour. Although surface iridium is slightly oxidized, this effect is negligibly small.
