Notes: The morphology of the crystalline–amorphous interface is studied during solid-phase epitaxial crystallization of amorphous GeSi alloy layers with depth-dependent Ge distributions. The interface is shown to undergo an initial strain-induced roughening transition when the Ge concentration exceeds 6.6 at. %. As crystallization continues in strain-relaxed material the interface is shown to further roughen or smooth in response to changes in the Ge distribution. This evolution of the interface morphology is shown to be a consequence of kinetic effects whereby the differential velocity between the leading and trailing edges of the rough interface increases in regions of increasing Ge concentration and decreases in regions of decreasing Ge concentration. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In order to protect the sensitive waters in Tolo harbour (Hong Kong), Sha Tin and Tai Po sewage-treatment works were first designed to remove 70% of the nitrogen load from the sewage. Since then, due to continuing serious eutrophication problems in the harbour, both plants have been modified to increase the removal efficiency to 90%.The modifications were based on the Bardenpho process. However, the designers of the two plants adopted different approaches to process intensity, complexity and control of bacterial foam. At Sha Tin, the average monthly results have shown an increase of total nitrogen removal from 60–70% to about 80% since its completion. The addition of methanol was found to be ineffective on further enhancement of the denitrification rate due to difficulties in the apportioning of the second anoxic zone. The overall monthly results for Tai Po have also shown an increase in the removal rate to about 80%, even though 90% was achieved for a short period of time. The major problem encountered at the latter plant was that the process design did not provide an effective control on bacterial foaming, which had affected the smooth operation of the process.

Notes: The geographical distribution of trees of cricket bat willow (Salix alba var. caerulea) showing watermark symptoms of infection by Erwinia salicis (Day) Chester during 1955 to 1972 is recorded. In an attempt to control the disease by eradication, 23,172 trees were destroyed in this 18-year period, as were 911 mother trees (stools) producing propagating material. During an intensive survey in 1972, 301 trees and seven stools were found to be infected out of an estimated total crop of 400,000 trees. In that year, agglutination tests and culturing sap were used in addition to the examination of trees with symptoms other than watermarking in the wood. The field observations, together with some experimental inoculations, indicate that the main sources of the disease in the field each year probably are (1), the nearby stumps of felled diseased trees and (2) infected propagating material.

Notes: The use of a slide agglutination test on squeezed-out sap of cultivated cricket bat willow trees allowed rapid diagnosis of infection by Erwinia salicis in the field. By this means, infection of “classically” diseased willow trees with both red leaf and wood staining was confirmed. Trees with either red leaf or wood stain, but not both symptoms, were also shown to be infected. Symptomless infection of cricket bat willow trees was detected. E. salicis was viable in the stumps of trees felled five years previously. Some of these stumps were in an advanced state of decay and some were producing symptomless leafy shoots. Trees dying with severe die-back symptoms and infected with Armil- laria mellea, were shown to be infected with E. salicis. Salix caprea and S. vitellina, two wild species of willow, were also shown to be infected.

Notes: Previous studies on the association of smoking with acne vulgaris have reported conflicting results. The objective of this study was to investigate such an association. Our setting was three primary care practices in Hong Kong and one primary care practice in India. Patient characteristics in all four practices are similar. All medical records in these practices incorporate a section in which the smoking habits of each patient is routinely documented. We searched our database and retrieved 632 records of patients with acne seen in the previous 5 years. We also retrieved 632 records of age- and sex-matched controls. Fifty-three out of 379 male patients with acne and 25 out of 379 male controls were smokers (P = 0.001; OR, 2.3; 95% CI, 1.4–3.8). Six out of 253 female patients with acne and three out of 253 female controls were smokers (OR, 2.0; 95% CI, 0.5–9.4). We conclude that smoking is likely to bear a positive correlation with acne for men. Our numbers are too small for a definite conclusion to be drawn for females.

Notes: Zusammenfassung Bei ausgewachsenen Albinoratten gelang nach i.v.

Notes: Abstract The pharmacological actions of prostaglandins E1, F1α, E2 and A1 were studied on the longitudinal and circular muscles of the isolated small intestine of the toad. Prostaglandin E1 caused relaxation, whereas prostaglandin A1 was inactive and prostaglandins F1α and E2 caused contractions. Other substances which relaxed the toad intestine were adrenaline, noradrenaline and isoprenaline. On a molar basis, prostaglandin E1 was seven times less potent than isoprenaline, but it was three times more potent than adrenaline and seventeen times more potent than noradrenaline. Phentolamine and propranolol blocked the relaxant effects of catecholamines in concentrations which did not alter the relaxant effect of prostaglandin E1. The results suggested that prostaglandin E1 acted directly on the intestinal smooth muscle of the toad rather than by the local release of catecholamines.
