    Notes: The glass-transition temperature of an epoxy resin cured at two different temperatures and plasticized with water and dibutylphthalate has been studied. Both modulus of elasticity and yield stress were measured as a function of temperature to determine the glass-transition temperature. Drying a saturated material appeared to restore the glass-transition temperature to its original value but some broadening of the transition occurred. The behavior of an undercured epoxy when saturated with water could not be predicted by theory. A substantial increase in the transition temperature was observed which may have been caused by the presence of water and an expanded structure.

    Notes: The embrittlement of ductile polymers resulting from outdoor weathering or aging or from the application of brittle surface coatings is explained using fracture mechanics principles. It is shown that in order for surface embrittlement to occur, the brittle surface should have a dynamic stress intensity factor at the brittle/ductile interface that exceeds the arrest toughness of the ductile polymer. This phenomenon is modeled using duplex tensile specimens fabricated from poly(methylmethacrylate) (brittle layer) and polycarbonate (ductile substrate) as well as from styrene-acrylonitrile and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymers.

    Notes: A model is proposed for the diffusion mechanism of water in glassy epoxy resins. The polymer network is assumed to consist of two regions in which water molecules possess different mobilities. By considering the distribution of water molecules among these regions it is possible to describe the concentration dependency of the diffusion coefficient in the sorption and resorption processes. The diffusion coefficient becomes constant when the sorption temperature is close to the effective glass transition temperature of the epoxy-water binary mixture. An explanation of this effect is also provided by the model.

    Notes: The mechanical properties of glass bead (30 micron diameter glass spheres) filled epoxy and polyester resins have been studied as a function of volume fraction of filler and the strength of the interfacial bond. The bonding between glass and resin was varied by chemically surface treating the glass using a silicone mold release to prevent chemical bonding at one extreme and a silane coupling agent to maximize bonding at the other extreme. Theoretical predictions of the elastic modulus and tensile strength have been made utilizing a finite element method. Excellent agreement is obtained with the experimental results. Izod impact energies have been measured for these composites as a function of filler content and interface treatment.

    Notes: The deep drawability of biaxially cold-rolled thermoplastic sheets has been studied using polycarbonate, polyvinyl chloride, and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene polymers. Each polymer was rolled to two different reductions in thickness. The deep drawability of these rolled sheets was measured by determining the limiting draw ratio using a Swift cup test. Strain ratios were measured in three directions for each of the rolled sheets in order to determine the normal and planar anisotropy of the sheets. It has been determined that the drawability of a sheet can be correlated with the normal anisotropy of the sheet and it is the increase in normal anisotropy of a sheet which increases the drawability of the sheet. It has also been shown that lubrication increases the drawability due to a reduction in punch force.

    Notes: Several types of amorphous polymers have been cold-rolled to various thickness reductions and the notched Izod impact behavior has then been studied. It has been determined that whereas some polymers exhibit large increases in impact strength with modest reductions in thickness other polymers only exhibit small increases in impact strength. For example, PVC, ABS, poly (phenylene oxide), and polysulfones show large increases in impact strength whereas rubber-toughened acrylics show only a small increase in impact strength.

    Notes: The fracture properties of three grades of acrylonitrile-buta-diene-styrene(ABS) were evaluated and compared. In preliminary studies, J1c (J integral) results obtained using the Begley and Landes procedure for single-edge-notched tension specimens and compact tension specimens were compared to establish the validity of the J1c criterion. It is shown that the Rice single-specimen approximation can be applied for this material, resulting in considerable simplification of the testing procedure. The J1c values for two of the grades were evaluated at two or more rates using the compact tension geometry and the single-specimen procedure over a temperature range of-60° to + 75°C. The results are analyzed in terms of a modified Eyring model, and the activation energies for the two grades of ABS were found to be 13.7 and 36.7 Kcals/mole, respectively.

    Notes: Diffusion of water in a glassy epoxy resin has been studied by the sorption method. Film thickness scaling is used as a diagnostic tool for non-Fickian sorption processes. A sorptiondesorption cycle effectively increases the preexisting free volume in the resin and renders the subsequent sorption process different from the original. The effect is understood by considering the time scale for diffusion and that for molecular relaxation of the glassy polymer network. A non-Fickian sorption process is observed for an insufficiently cured resin and is caused by the resin undergoing further postcuring in the sorption process. It is shown that oxidation of the resin during sorption also gives rise to non-Fickian processes previously described in the literature as diffusion anomalies for epoxies. It is further shown that the difference between sorption and resorption curves is not caused by irreversible damage to the resin but due to reversible changes in network conformations.

    Notes: The effect of cold rolling on impact strength of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), and an alloy of ABS and polycarbonate (Cycoloy) was studied. The results were presented in terms of Izod impact strength and present oil thickness reduction. The residual stresses molecule orientation and modification of mechanical properties due cold rolling were measured. It was shown that the mechanism of toughness enhancement in PVC, ABS, and Cycoloy different than the one observed in rolled polycarbonates. In the case of a highly localized failure initiation event (a single eraxe), which appears to be present in polycarbonate, the influence of residual stresses, is great, whereas in rubber modified polymers having multiple erasing over a large volume, orientation is more important than residual stress. Hot rolling of poly(methyl methaerylate) holds promise for a continuous process to achieve orientation and toughness enhancement.
