    Notes: The environmental pollutant 3, 3′, 4, 4′-tetrachlorobiphenyl (TCB) leads to thymic atrophy and immuno-suppression, the former possibly causing the latter. TCB binds lo the cytosolic aryl-hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) and transforms it into a DNA-binding state. The development of fetal thymocyles is severely affected by TCB and other AhR-binding xenobiotics, leading to a skewed pattern of thymocyte maturation stages. Murine thymocyte proliferation after exposure to TCB was studied in fetal thymus organ culture (FTOC). C57BL/6 fetus thymic lobes from day 15 of gestation were explanted and grown for 2, 4, 6. and 8 days in organ culture in the presence or absence of 3.3 μM TCB. Subsets of thymocytes were defined by CD4 and CD8 surface markers, and their cell cycle was analysed by DNA staining with 7-amino-actinomycin D (7-AAD). Exposure of fetal thymi in vitro to 3.3 μM TCB significantly reduced the total number of thymocytes. and fewer thymocytes were in S/G2M phase. The inhibition of cell proliferation induced by TCB treatment affected mainly the CD4− CD8− (double-negative, DN) and CD4− CD8+ (single-positive, SP) subsets, and these inhibition appeared mainly in more immature thymocytes, i. e. DNCD3− and CD8+CD3− subpopulations, whereas no effect of TCB on CD4+CD8+ (double-positive, DP) cell proliferative activity was observed. Analysis of the relation of cell proliferation and development of subsets in differentiating fetal ihymocytes suggests that TCB enhanced thymocyte differentiation into mature CD8+ cells.

    Notes: Summary A codominantly inherited mutation of the lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) in the C3H mouse causes a severe hemolytic anemia in homozygous mutants, whereas viability and fertility are close to normal. Investigation of multipotent hemopoietic stem cells (CFU-S), myeloid (GM-CFC) and erythroid progenitors (BFU-E, CFU-E) in femur and spleen indicates a general shift from bone marrow to splenic hemopoiesis. In terms of total body hemopoiesis, however, the BFU-E pool is 1.4- and the CFU-E pool 19-fold enlarged, whereas CFU-S and GM-CFC show little or no deviation from normal. It is concluded that this mouse mutant is an appropriate model of long-term hemopoietic stress showing that compensation in this severe hemolytic anemia is achieved primarily by an increase of the number of the most mature erythroid progenitors.

    Notes: Abstract Parameters derived from photosynthesis-irradiance (P-I) models, although often empirical in nature, are useful indicators of the photoadaptive state of phytoplankton in culture and in situ. However objective criteria for determining significant changes in P-I curves are rarely provided, because confidence intervals for parameters of non-linear models are not estimated easily. Examination of least-squares residuals in parameter space and Monte Carlo approaches have been used to estimate confidence regions around parameter values, but the computationally intensive nature of these methods has prevented their routine application. We present an alternative method of estimating confidence intervals for parameters of P-I curves that runs quickly on a microcomputer and is easily combined with common parameter-estimation routines. This algorithm was tested using a 3-parameter P-I model and curves describing a wide range of photoadaptive states, with different numbers of observations and different amounts of inherent variability. The method produced results comparable to the Monte Carlo technique. This analysis makes it possible to specify the sample size required to define parameters with acceptable confidence as a function of data variance and photoadaptive state. In most reasonable situations, 25 observations are sufficient.

    Notes: Abstract The development of a shear-deformable laminated plate element, based on the Mindlin plate theory, for use in large reference displacement analysis is presented. The element is sufficiently general to accept an arbitrary number of layers and an arbitrary number of orthotrophic material property sets. Coordinate mapping is utilized so that non-rectangular elements may be modeled. The Gauss quadrature method of numerical integration is utilized to evaluate volume integrals. A comparative study is done on the use of full Gauss quadrature, reduced Gauss quadrature, mixed Gauss quadrature, and closed form integration techniques for the element. Dynamic analysis is performed on the RSSR (Revolute-Spherical-Spherical-Revolute) mechanism, with the coupler modeled as a flexible plate. The results indicate the differences in the dynamic response of the transverse shear deformable eight-noded element as compared to a four-noded plate element. Dynamically induced stresses are examined, with the results indicating that the primary deformation mode of the eight-noded Mindlin plate model being bending.

    Notes: Abstract A 31-year-old married man with normal male characteristics requested hormonal treatment to enlarge his breasts and nipples. He did not feel himself to be homosexual or transsexual but considered himself incomplete without female breasts and nipples. Petting of his nipples resulted in sexual excitement and he presumed that feminization of his breasts would improve this function. His wife supported his wish. After treatment with 0.150 mg ethinylestradiol per day for 9 months, moderate breast enlargement occurred and the nipples became the size of normal female nipples. One year afterwards he remained satisfied with his female-type breasts and in particular with the increased sexual function of his nipples. Stimulation of his nipples resulted in erection and ejaculation.
