Notes: Abstract Post-yield behaviour, particularly strain softening, has been studied here for an epoxy resin to examine the effects of postcuring and plasticization by water and a non-volatile diluent dibutylphtalate. The significance of necking was examined by conducting compression tests (at room temperature) as well as tensile tests. In the case of tensile tests, elevated temperatures were used in order to achieve yielding. The amount of strain softening was found to be reduced by postcuring or by the addition of a plasticizer. In the case of postcuring, little change in yield stress occurred, whereas, with plasticizers, a reduction in yield stress does occur.

Notes: Abstract The strength and elastic properties of randomly distributed low aspect ratio fibre composites were investigated. The fibre-matrix interfacial conditions were varied by applying various surface treatments to the fibres. The influence of the interfacial bond on the strengths of such composites was demonstrated.

Notes: An investigation of the effect of modifying the network structure on moisture absorption of epoxies was performed. The network was modified by crosslinking the epoxides with various mono/diamine proportions, resulting in decreasing density and increasing free volume. It was discovered, however, that concomitant effects, i.e., the formation of a two-phase structure, and changes in resin polarity and in resin-water affinity predominated. Thus, compositions with higher chain molecular weights between crosslink points yet exhibited lower diffusion coefficients. Also, when drastic swelling conditions (such as a water-boil treatment) were employed, moisture absorption was facilitated by penetration via newly formed microcracks.

Notes: Normally ductile polymers may exhibit unexpected brittle fractures because of a phenomenon termed surface embrittlement. The problem may arise whenever a thin brittle layer is present on the surface, which may result from the application of brittle paint or, more commonly, from surface degradation caused by exposure to elevated temperatures, ultra-violet radiation, and stress-cracking agents. In rubber-modified polymers such as acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene and high-impact polystyrene, exposure to the outdoor environment inevitably results in the formation of a thin surface layer containing cross-linked rubber particles in a matrix of reduced molecular weight. Although the depth of material adversely affected is typically small compared to the bulk, a drastic reduction in ductility nonetheless has been observed. To better understand the mechanism of embrittlement, this paper examines the criterion for embrittlement by considering the mechanism for enhanced energy absorption of rubber-toughened plastics and elementary concepts of fracture mechanics. It has been shown that a critical coating thickness exists when multiple crazing is essentially inoperative and the deformation is localized, to the tip of a fast moving sharp crack restricting strain energy dissipation to a relatively small region.

Notes: The mechanical properties of glass bead (30 micron diameter glass spheres) filled epoxy and polyester resins have been studied as a function of volume fraction of filler and the strength of the interfacial bond. The bonding between glass and resin was varied by chemically surface treating the glass using a silicone mold release to prevent chemical bonding at one extreme and a silane coupling agent to maximize bonding at the other extreme. Theoretical predictions of the elastic modulus and tensile strength have been made utilizing a finite element method. Excellent agreement is obtained with the experimental results. Izod impact energies have been measured for these composites as a function of filler content and interface treatment.

Notes: The deep drawability of biaxially cold-rolled thermoplastic sheets has been studied using polycarbonate, polyvinyl chloride, and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene polymers. Each polymer was rolled to two different reductions in thickness. The deep drawability of these rolled sheets was measured by determining the limiting draw ratio using a Swift cup test. Strain ratios were measured in three directions for each of the rolled sheets in order to determine the normal and planar anisotropy of the sheets. It has been determined that the drawability of a sheet can be correlated with the normal anisotropy of the sheet and it is the increase in normal anisotropy of a sheet which increases the drawability of the sheet. It has also been shown that lubrication increases the drawability due to a reduction in punch force.
