Notes: Atomic absorption spectroscopy was used for measuring the zinc content, in ppb (μg/1), of brain tissue. A new method for determining the correction factor of atomic absorption interference is described.Measurements of the zinc content of twenty-four regions of adult human brains showed the maximum zinc content in resistent sector and endplate of the Amnion's horn, corroborating the histochemical data. The distribution of zinc in other regions was relatively uniform, but white matter showed lower values than gray matter. The zinc content of seventeen regions of human newborn brains was below that in adult brains, for all regions. The blood content of brain tissue contributed only insignificantly to its zinc content.

Notes: Summary Nine patients with secondary atrophy of the fornices and transneuronal atrophy of the mammillary bodies are described. All had relatively discrete lesions of Ammon's horn, seven unilateral. The subiculum was always involved. The origin of the lesions from perinatal damage is discussed.

Notes: Summary The light and ultrastructural analyses of an extradural intraspinal angiolipoma causing symptoms of spinal cord compression, are reported. The tumour showed morphological evidence of an endocrine-like secretory activity of fat cells, with an apparent mechanism of secretory function that has not previously been described for angiolipomas. The secretory granules, containing a lipid-like material, were covered with a continuous basement membrane originating from the basement membrane of the adipocyte.

Notes: Summary Subarachnoid heterotopias were produced experimentally in rats by intracisternal injection of dissociated fetal brain tissue. Heterotopias contained neurons and glial tissue and also mesodermal tissue including striated skeletal muscle. The data show that particles of disintegrated germinal tissue can survive, redistribute, settle and mature within the CSF spaces.

Notes: Summary Computer-assisted measurements of relative myelin sheath thickness (the g ratio) were made in 11 peripheral nerves of the rat. The scatter diagrams showed nerve-specific variations in the distribution of relative myelin sheath thickness. Myelinated fibers of less than 3.5 μm axon diameter had relatively thin myelin sheaths, particularly in the splanchnic, vagus and glossopharyngeal nerves. The oculomoter nerve had two fiber populations clearly set apart in terms of relative myelin sheath thickness. Thickly myelinated fibers were found in facial and hypoglossal nerves. No single functional modality was evident for the thinly myelinated fibers

Notes: Summary The areas of molecular and granular layers in four large cerebellar cortical dysplasias were measured with the planimeter and the Purkinje cells were counted. There was a relative deficit of molecular layer and a still greater deficit of Purkinje cells in three of the four dysplasias. The fourth one had normal numbers of Purkinje cells per molecular layer and a relative deficit of granular layer. These abnormal proportions in the composition of a dysplasia may relate to the timing of its origin.

Notes: Summary An early fetal case of cloverleaf skull anomaly associated with thanatophoric chondrodystrophy is described. Localized ventricular diverticles are a peculiar finding. In addition there are previously described malformations limited to the temporal lobes and comprising plump gyri with abnormal deep sulci, thick periventricular heterotopias, dysgenesis of the parahippocampal gyrus, agenesis of the Ammon's horn, and small micropolygyria. The skull deformity is not dependent on hydrocephalus, demonstrating inconsistencies in previous pathogenetic concepts.
