Notes: [Auszug] The low chromosome numbers (2n= 13 in male and 12 in female) and the distinct morphology of the potoroo chromosomes enable an accurate estimation of damage at metaphase to be made. Translocations involving two or more chromosomes can be recognized without ambiguity. Table 1. CHROMOSOME DAMAGE IN ...

Notes: [Auszug] The difference between the DNA content of the placental mammals and birds suggests that these two classes of warm-blooded vertebrates have evolved from different lineages. It would be interesting to know where the other two groups of mammals, the marsupials and mono-tremes, belong. No information ...

Notes: [Auszug] Improvements in techniques?especially hypotonic treatment for spleen and testis preparations?permit easy determination of high chromosome numbers. The discovery of phytohaemagglutinin3 as an artificial stimulus for the proliferation of peripheral blood leucocytes allows rapid determination of ...

Notes: [Auszug] I have experimented with a somewhat simpler apparatus lacking the elegant device of the vibrating image screen. In this case the aim was to increase the depth of field at high magnifications by superimposing on the one virtual image plane, repetitive images of successive planes scanned in depth. ...

Notes: [Auszug] Brian and Hemming2 have shown that segregation at the Le locus affects some aspect of the metabolism of the gibberellins. In view of the over-lapping pleiotropic effects of segregation at the Le and Sn loci, we have made an investigation of the effect of gibberellic acid on flowering in the four ...

Notes: [Auszug] DURING the past twenty years the genetical theory of natural selection has become the dominating theory of evolutionary mechanism. Its dominance is probably greater to-day than was that of Darwin's own theory in the years before the anti-Darwinian revulsion of the late nineteenth century. The ...

Notes: Abstract Samples of males reveal the presence of a large, mitotically stable supernumerary chromosome in five populations examined. A stable frequency (11.22±0.3%) of male carriers has been observed over nine years in one population. The supernumerary follows closely the condensation cycle and behaviour of the sex chromosome in spermatogonial mitosis and meiosis. A structure simulating a terminalized chiasma frequently joins the precocious sex and supernumerary chromosomes during meiotic prophase; these two chromosomes move preferentially (70%) to opposite poles during the subsequent stages producing a differential transmission of the supernumerary to the two sexes. It is possible that the stable frequency in the population is maintained by a conserved balance between the two sexes without the need of an elimination system. The evidence supports the interpretation that the supernumerary chromosome is partially homologous with the sex chromosome. The possibility that the supernumerary might evolve into a neo-Y chromosome is suggested.
