Notes: Summary Dopamine beta-hydroxylase (DBH) activity has been found in synovial fluid obtained from human knees. The enzyme activity was about 5% of the activity found in the serum of the same control patients. DBH activity in synovial fluid of patients suffering osteoarthritis was 3 times higher.

Notes: Summary The response characteristics of interpositus neurones (IP) to sciatic nerve stimulation were studied in normal and Lurcher mutant mice under pentobarbitone anaesthesia. The response of IP neurones in the normal mouse was a short latency bimodal excitation (E1-I1-E2) followed by a depression of the firing rate (I2) and ending with a longer latency excitation (E3) which was completed within 225 msec. The response of the majority of IP neurones in the Lurcher mouse was a short latency unimodal excitation (LE1) which corresponded in time to the E1-I1-E2 phase in the normal. This was followed by a pause in the excitation. The response ended with a longer latency excitation (LE2) corresponding in time to the E3 phase in the normal mouse but which persisted for a considerably greater period of time. The response of IP neurones in normal and Lurcher mice appear to be similar to those observed in the normal and experimentally cerebellar decorticate cat, respectively.

Notes: Summary The occurrence of lead, zinc, cadmium, and copper in individuals of Helix aspersa from two sites of varying degrees of contamination was studied. Zinc, cadmium, and copper were shown to increase in a linear fashion with animal weight. The rate of uptake for zinc and cadmium in particular was significantly greater at the more contaminated site. Statistical analysis of the data, using correlation and regression techniques provided information on apparent intermetallic effects. It is concluded that because metal uptake and body weight show a positive linear relationship only the use of animals of similar weight and/or size can be used for monitoring purposes. Even then, different patterns of uptake into different organs and interactions between metal uptakes are such as to seriously question the use of Helix, and other molluscs, for monitoring purposes unless specific organs from comparably sized and/or aged animals are used.

Notes: Summary 67 patients in whom a total of 68 arteries had been made patent by streptokinase treatment were observed for periods of up to six years. In ten of the 68 cases (=15%) reocclusion occurred while patients were still in the hospital. The remaining case material with definitely cleared vessels was divided into three groups: (A) patients in whom evaluation of the vascular status was possible; (B) patients who had died in the meantime; and (C) patients in whom the state of the vessels could not be ascertained for technical reasons. Listed below are the results obtained in Group (A): 1 The reocclusion rate showed a steady rise of up to 21% during the first three years following streptokinase treatment, and fluctuated around that value up to the end of the sixth year. 2 The iliac artery permitted the best results among the vascular segments cleared. The reocclusion rate was very low at 0 to 14% throughout the six-year observation period. 3 The femoral artery reached a reocclusion rate of 4/15 (=27%) after 1 year, of 2/11 (=18%) after 2 years, of 2/6 (=33%) after 3 years and of 3/6 (=50%) after 4 and 5 years. 4 The aortic reocclusion figure was between the figures ascertained for the iliac and femoral arteries. 5 Regular and therapeutically effective oral treatment with anticoagulants produced a significant drop in the reocclusion rate. Abstinence from smoking showed a similar trend which, however, did not reach the significance level.

Notes: Summary The use of columns packed with small particles (diameters between 5 and 20 μm) has become widespread in liquid chromatography. These columns allow the achievement of remarkably high performances. They cannot be packed by the old conventional, dry-packing methods because the small particles agglomerate to larger ones, which has a catastrophic effect on the efficiency. It becomes necessaryto use wet packing methods which all use a slurry of the stationary phase. The various techniques are described and discussed. They differ mainly in the technique used to keep the particles in suspension in the solvent, and to prevent their sedimentation. The various methods of coating a liquid stationary phase on the support for use in liquid-liquid chromatography, are also discussed.
