Notes: Quality audit data collected as part of a mass feeding quality assurance program were analyzed to determine the relationships between the indicator tests (total aerobic plate count, coliform count and Escherichiu coli) and the common food-borne pathogens (Staphylococcus aureus, Clostridium perfringens and Salmonella). 132 raw foods and 593 ready-to-eat foods were evaluated. The indicators were grouped into ranges and compared to the pathogens and to each other in terms of detectability. There were correlations between the pathogens and the indicator ranges and between the indicators and the indicator ranges. The value of the indicators in the èvaluation of food safety was tested by setting standards and determining the numbers of correct and incorrect decisions which would be made relative to the pathogens detected in the foods. None of the indicators was suitable as a screening agent for food safety.

Notes: Abstract This paper describes a relatively simple and rapid analytical procedure capable to carry out systematic screening for 10 heavy metals, namely mercury, bismuth, antimony, copper, lead, tin, thallium, indium, cadmium and zinc. Differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetry was chosen because of its simplicity, speed, low cost, low detection limits, screening potential for a wide selection of metals and the combined qualitative and quantitative output. The method of identification is based on measuring peak potentials in 2 different types of electrolyte solution, using 2 different electrodes. Complexing agents are used to mask certain elements.

Notes: Summary A special cell line derived from a rat mammary adenocarcinoma (RMCD cells) displays a distinct pattern of actomyosin fibrils (AM fibrils) visible with phase contrast, Nomarski interference and polarized light optics. It was shown that the cytoplasmic AM fibrils are arranged as bundles of highly parallel F-actin filaments. The chemical nature of the filaments was identified by incubation with heavy meromyosin from rabbit skeletal muscle. These cytoplasmic actomyosin fibrils actively contract under isotonic conditions. This was shown by contraction experiments under polarized light optics, by cinematographic analysis and by direct proof of the contractility of AM fibrils isolated by laser micro-dissection. Thus, cytoplasmic AM fibrils can be assumed to represent structures essential for motive force generation in contraction processes in non-muscle cells.

Notes: Summary The spiral limbus of the chinchilla inner ear was investigated using the freeze-fracture method. In the replica we observed that a) the intercellular space between the epithelial cells of the spiral limbus (interdental cells and inner sulcus cells) is completely sealed from the endolymphatic space by extense tight junctions, b) the epithelial cells are joined to each other by gap junctions, as well as the cells of the perilymphatic space. Tight junctions seal the intercellular space of an epithelium towards an adjoining lumen, gap junctions represent an area of electrotonical and metabolical communication of cells without participation of the intercellular space. From these findings in accordance with previous investigations of the vascular stria, the Reissner-membrane, and the organ of Corti we conclude, that in the inner ear the tight junctions occur independently on location and function of the single epithelium and that they play a role in the maintenance of the endocochlear potential and the high potassium concentration gradient between endolymph and perilymph. The presence of numerous and extense gap junctions between the cells of the perilymphatic space is similar in the vascularised areas of the cochlear duct. A continuous supply of cells of the individual tissue seems to be maintained as well as its participation at the homoeostasis of the surrounding liquid.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung 132 femoro-crurale Revaskularisationen bei 126 Patienten. Primär freie Durchgängigkeit in 93,9%. Bei Nachuntersuchung von 120 Revaskularisationen 78,3% offen, 15 Bypass-Verschlüsse und 11 Amputationen. Gutes Spätergebnis in 64,4 %, 2–9 Jahre postoperativ.
Notes: Summary Femorocrural revascularization was performed in 132 operations in 126 patients. In 85.6% of these cases the operation was indicated because stage-III or stage-IV ischemia was present. The necessity for surgery is determined by radiography of the arteries of the lower leg; in 31 of these patients it was necessary to perform a direct femoral puncture or an exploratory vascular operation followed by angiography. The authors' policy was to perform orthotopic reconstruction with autologous vein grafts. In isolated cases a ring clearance or a prothesis was used in the thigh region. Immediate patency was obtained in 93.9%. Of these operations, 120 were seen at follow-up; 78.3% of the bypasses were still patent, there was occlusion in 15 cases, and amputation was necessary in 11. Long-term results (2–9 years after the operation) were good in 64.4%.

Description / Table of Contents: Gaschromatographic and 29Si-NMR Spectroscopic Investigations on Silicic Acid TrimethylsilylestersSilicic acid trimethylsilylesters of different constitutions are characterized by gaschromatographic retention index and retention temperatures. It is shown that the retention indices of the esters depend mainly on the number of trimethylsilylgroups in the molecule and exhibit only small effects of the constitution of the silicic acid framework. The 29Si-n.m.r. spectra of 9 silicic acid TMS-esters of different constitutions are recorded and the assignment of the signals to the individual building units of the esters are discussed. On the basis of these results the constitutions of hexamer silicic acid-TMS-esters is investigated. Two isomers of the bicyclo-hexasilicic acid ester [(CH3)3Si]10 [Si6O17] could be identified.
