Description / Table of Contents: Conjugation in Macrocyclic Systems, XXIV. Benzo[12]annulenes: On the Annulene Character of Dibenzo- and Tribenzo[12]annulenesAs a contribution to the controversial discussion about the antiaromaticity of the [12]annulene system in the di- and tribenzo[12]annulenes 3 and 4 the compounds 5, 8, and 18 were prepared for comparison. The discussion of the 1H n. m. r. spectra with consideration of the anisotropy effect of the triple bonds led to the conclusion that in contrast to earlier assumptions the [12]annulene system in 3 and 4 in spite of the benzo-anellation is paratropic.

Description / Table of Contents: Conjugation in Macrocyclic Systems, XXV. Benzo[12]annulenes: Synthesis and Properties of a Benzo-naphtho[12]annuleneThe benzo-naphtho[12]annulene 4, where in contrast to 1, 2, and 3 a planar twelve-membered ring is present, has been synthesized via 6-9. 1H n. m. r. absorption of the internal hydrogen is observed at δ = 13.13 ppm. The allotment of this considerable down-field shift to the paratropic effect of the annulene system and the anisotropy of the triple bonds is discussed. For this purpose, the twelve-ring system 5 in which the macrocyclic conjugation is interrupted has been synthesized from 9 via 10 and 11.

Description / Table of Contents: Orientation Effects on Charge-Transfer Interactions, IX. Diastereomeric 4,7-Dicyano-12,15-dimethoxy[2.2]paracyclophanesThe diastereomeric donor-acceptor [2.2]paracyclophanes 1 and 2 were synthesized via the corresponding dithia[3.3]phanes ¾ and the disulfones ⅚ derived therefrom. The constitutional assignment of the diastereomers is discussed on the basis of 1H NMR measurements. Compounds 7 and 8, which contain either the donor or the acceptor part of 1/2 in the [2.2]paracyclophane, were prepared for spectroscopic comparison.  -  The charge-transfer interactions in 1 and 2 were determined by means of absorption and emission spectra and on the basis of the zero field splitting parameter |D| measured by ODMR. The comparison between 1 and 2 shows a strong orientation dependence of charge-transfer interactions.

Description / Table of Contents: Orientation Effects on Charge-Transfer Interactions, VI. The Two Intramolecular Quinhydrones of the [2.2]Paracyclophane SeriesThe intramolecular quinhydrones of the [2.2]paracyclophane series 1 and 2, which differ in the donor-acceptor orientation, were synthesized via the corresponding diastereomeric 4,7,12,15-tetramethoxy[2.2]paracyclophanes, the chiral “pseudo-ortho” compound 4 and the achiral “pseudogeminal” isomer 5. 4 and 5 were prepared starting from suitably substituted dithia[3.3]paracyclophanes (6-10). Demethylation of 4 and 5 and oxidation yielded the diastereomeric [2.2](2,5)-p-benzoquinonophanes 14 and 15, the partial hydrogenation of which resulted in the formation of 1 and 2.  -  Spectroscopic properties of 1, 2, and their precursors are discussed in detail, especially with regard to stereoisomerism. The comparison of the charge-transfer absorptions of 1 and 2 shows very large differences, which are ascribed to the different donor-acceptor orientation in 1 and 2.

Description / Table of Contents: Orientation Effects on Charge-Transfer Interactions, VIII. Diastereomeric 4,7-Dimethoxy-12,15-dinitro[2.2]paracyclophansThe two diastereomeric 4,7-dimethoxy-12,15-dinitro[2.2]paracyclophanes 3 and 4 were synthesized via the corresponding 2,11-dithia[3.3]paracyclophanes 9/10 and the disulfones 11/12 derived therefrom. 3 and 4 were separated by chromatography and assigned on the basis of 1H NMR. -  Although the donor-acceptor components 1,4-dimethyl-2,5-dinitrobenzene and 1,4-dimethoxy-2,5-dimethylbenzene do not show any charge-transfer(CT) complexation, the corresponding donor-acceptor [2.2]paracyclophanes 3 and 4 exhibit strong CT absorptions between 450 and 600 nm. There exist considerable differences in the intensity of the CT bands between 3 and 4, which are ascribed to the different orientations of the donor-acceptor system.

Description / Table of Contents: Orientation Effects on Charge-Transfer Interactions. VII. Further Donor-Acceptor [2.2]Paracyclophanes of the Quinhydrone TypeAs further donor-acceptor [2.2]paracyclophanes with different donor-acceptor orientation, the diastereomeric pairs ¾ and ⅚ were synthesized: 3 was formed when tetrahydroxy[2.2]paracyclophane (obtained by hydrogenation of 7) was methylated uncompletely and then oxidized; 3 was also prepared from 8 by hydrolysis of the Birch reduction product 9;4 was obtained analogously starting from 10.5 and 6 were synthesized by silylation of 1 and 2. - In agreement with the results reported for the [2.2]paracyclophane quinhydrones ½, the pseudo-ortho compounds 3 and 5 show, in comparison with the pseudogeminal isomers 4 and 6, resp., for the long-wavelength charge-transfer absorption (400-600 nm) an intensity reduction by about a factor of ten and an additional charge-transfer absorption around 350 nm.

Notes: Communications are brief preliminary reports of research work in all areas of chemistry which, on account of its fundamental significance, novelty, or general applicability, should be of interest to a broad spectrum of chemists. Authors of communications are requested to state reasons of this kind justifying publication on submission of their manuscript. The same reasons should be clearly apparent from the manuscript. In cases where the editorial staff decide, after due consultation with independent referees, that these conditions are not met, manuscripts will be returned to the authors with the request to submit them for publication in a specialist journal catering for scientists working in the field concerned.
