    Notes: Summary. Forty primigravid womcn aged 15–45 years were randomly allocated to receive either an intravaginal pessary of 3 mg prostaglandin E, (PGE2) or an intracervical 5-mm laminaria tent (LT) 12–16 h before termination of pregnancy at 6–14 weeks gestation. The degree of dilatation of the cervix a t operation and its resistance t o further dilatation during the procedure were assessed by a ‘blind’ operator. Laminaria tents were more effective in achieving dilatation and softening of the cervix than were PGE2 pessaries and in 40% of women no further dilatation was necessary. There were no associated side-effects or complications. A cervical tear occurred in two of 20 patients treated with PGE2 pessaries and all 20 required further dilatation of the cervix. Laminaria tents provide a simple. safe, acceptable and effective means of ‘ripening’ the cervix prior to termination of early pregnancy.

    Notes: Four cases of air embolism which occurred during neurosurgical procedures in the sitting position are described, in whom the signs could be due to air in the coronary or cerebral arteries. It is suggested that, during venous air embolism in the sitting position, a significant number of patients are haemodynamically at risk from paradoxical air embolism, and that the serious consequences of venous air embolism in neurosurgery may be due to this.

    Notes: Mean-field theory has been extremely successful in interpreting the complex spin reorientations which take place as a function of temperature and composition in mixed rare-earth–iron Laves-phase crystals, but no effort has been made to interpret the higher-order (κ8) Cubic harmonic term which has been observed experimentally. We generalize the usual mean-field treatment of these alloys to take into account deviations of individual spin directions away from the mean-field direction, and then calculate the free energy as a function of the net magnetization direction, which corresponds directly to what is measured experimentally. At low temperatures the net magnetization direction can differ by as much as 15° to 20° from the assumed mean-field direction, which has a very large effect on the measured anisotropy constants.

    Notes: The development of a radiochemical enzyme assay for p-octopamine in 1969 led to its identification in a large number of invertebrate nerve systems and in mammalian sympathetic nerves. The original method by which p-octopamine was measured has now been found to be nonspecific; however, modifications of this procedure can determine both m- and p-octopamine. We recently developed a new specific method for the unequivocal identification and quantitative determination in tissue of the six octopamine and synephrine isomers. With this method—negative chemical ionization gas chromatography-mass spectrometry—the more physiologically active m-octopamine has been found in association with p-octopamine in 10 organs of the rat. m-Octopamine is present in concentrations equal to those of p-octopamine in heart, spleen, and liver and in concentrations from 30 to 60% of p-octopamine in adrenals, vas deferens, brain, kidney, large intestine, bladder, and lungs. In vivo inhibition of monoamine oxidase markedly increased the concentrations of both m- and p-octopamine in all organs examined. Both amines were virtually absent from all organs except the adrenals following chemical sympathectomy with 6-hydroxydopamine, thereby establishing that m- and p-octopamine are localized within sympathetic nerve endings.

    Notes: Summary Seven male subjects exercised for 1, 3, 10 and 20 min on a cycle ergometer at 20, 60 and 80% $$\dot V_{O_{2\max } } $$ , and then held to fatigue a sustained contraction of the quadriceps at 40% maximal voluntary contraction in order to determine what influence various levels of dynamic exercise would have on isometric function of the same group of muscles. Muscle temperature was measured before and within 15 s of the completion of the cycling to determine whether changes in muscle temperature might influence the subsequent isometric perormance. Isometric endurance was shorter as the severity of the cycling increased beyond 20% $$\dot V_{O_{2\max } } $$ , and as the duration of cycling increased up to 10 min. There were discrete linear relationships between muscle temperature and isometric endurance associated with cycling at 60% and 80% $$\dot V_{O_{2\max } } $$ . There was a direct inverse relationship between quadriceps strength after cycling and muscle temperature, yet a significant reduction in strength occurred only after cycling at 80% $$\dot V_{O_{2\max } } $$ . These results suggest that the encroachment on endurance and strength are controlled by different mechanisms. The heart rates during the isometric contractions were dependent on the preceding rhythmic exercise and decreased after exercise at 60 or 80% $$\dot V_{O_{2\max } } $$ . In contrast, the blood pressure always increased during the isometric contractions, reaching similar values at the point of fatigue, regardless of the severity of the previous rhythmic exercise. These data provide additional evidence that separate mechanisms control changes in heart rate and blood pressure.

    Notes: Abstract 200 µm and 50 µm mesh aperture nets were compared with respect to the sampling of the drift of Chironomidae (Diptera) larvae. 200 µm mesh drift nets were found to be unsatisfactory for the sampling of chironomid larval drift; such nets seriously underestimated drift density of larvae and distorted the sub-family and instar composition of samples. 200 µm mesh drift nets captured larval drift in densities of 1–24 m−3, while pumped samples, filtered through 50 µm mesh aerial nets, indicated densities of 10–1600 m−3. Drift nets also underestimated ephemeropteran drift density. The use of pumps, with 50 µm or smaller mesh aperture aerial nets, is recommended for quantitative and qualitative sampling of chironomid drift, and possibly that of other invertebrates.
