Notes: Electron traps in bulk n-type Hg0.7Cd0.3Te were investigated near the HgCdTe/SiO2 interface by use of deep level transient spectroscopy on metal-insulator-semiconductor structures [D. V. Lang, J. Appl. Phys. 45, 3022 (1974)]. Three electron traps are found with activation energies (relative to the conduction band edge) of 0.12, 0.172, and 0.079 eV, and corresponding capture cross sections of 3.5×10−18, 1.1×10−16, and 1.2×10−18 cm2. Depth profiles from the surface to ∼1.0 μm show the concentration of the 0.172-eV trap to be uniform while the 0.12-eV trap shows a strong depth dependence. It is undetectable at the surface, rising in concentration to twice its bulk value at ∼0.5 μm depth then falling to a value comparable with that of the 0.172-eV trap in the bulk (1 μm). Divalent trapping behavior has also been detected. In this case, the deeper state significantly depopulates, enabling a shallower state to then depopulate [J. S. Blakemore, Semiconductor Statistics (Pergamon, London, 1962), p. 156].

Notes: Summary. Catecholamines were measured in maternal venous, and mixed umbilical cord blood. Maternal catecholamines were significantly (P〈0·01) reduced by epidural analgesia with a 36% reduction in nor-adrenaline and a 33% reduction in adrenaline. Fetal catecholamines were elevated at birth with a 3–8 fold increase in noradrenaline but not adrenaline during spontaneous vaginal delivery. The lowest fetal catecholamines were obtained in the group delivered under epidural analgesia; lower plasma catecholamines were not associated with adverse respiratory effects. Fetal platelets showed impaired a2-adrenoceptor function with absent aggregatory responses to adrenaline in vitro. The defect in platelet function was unlikely to be related to changes in the number of fetal platelet α-receptors or to changes in receptor affinity for adrenaline, as fetal platelets failed to aggregate to adrenaline from deliveries with high and low cord blood catecholamines.

Notes: It is the thesis of this paper that there are some problem contexts in which the risk for either no-response or negative effects of therapy are considerably greater than the probability of positive outcomes, despite the competence level of the therapist or special characteristics of the client system. It is these contexts that warrant the inclusion of a no-treatment option among therapists' current range of treatment choices. Rather than turning client systems away in an absolute sense, however, no-treatment is presented as a frame in which therapists are not obligated to help change a problem but may continue to have some form of contact with the client-system. Four no-treatment prescriptions are presented that can be employed strategically either (a) to increase available opportunities for therapist leverage within a problem context, or (b) to amplify competence in pivotal family members when the problem context demands immediate competent responses. Case studies are presented to highlight the contextual information used in making no-treatment decisions.

Notes: A pump/probe laser approach is utilized to investigate in a time-resolved manner the photochemistry of copper coordination complexes in the gas phase. These compounds are metal atom precursors for photochemical laser metal vapor deposition. Dissociation is effected by a KrF excimer laser and the copper atoms are detected via laser induced fluorescence. Evidence is provided that suggests that under excimer laser photolysis, the metal atom generation may proceed via unimolecular decomposition.

Notes: 1. The effects of age on α-adrenoceptor responses, sensitivity and number were studied in rabbits aged from 1 to 36 months.2. Three types of investigation were carried out: conscious animal studies, isolated tissue studies and radioligand binding studies.3. Specific [3H]-prazosin binding decreased with age in both spleen and heart suggesting that the number of α1-receptors declined at least in the tissues studied. The specific binding of [3H]-clonidine to spleen membranes and [3H]-yohimbine to platelets was not affected by age.4. In vitro responsiveness to α-adrenoceptor agonists decreased with age in abdominal aorta and renal artery, while the affinity of adrenoceptors for prazosin (pA2) was not altered. The decrease may be non-specific as responses to potassium were also altered. No change in α2-adrenoceptor mediated platelet aggregation was observed.5. No change in pressor or depressor responses to full adrenoceptor agonists or to antagonists was observed in vivo. However, responses to clonidine, which is a partial agonist at α1-adrenoceptors, were decreased.6. While aging influenced α-adrenoceptor subtypes differently, there was no direct relation between functional changes and number of receptors.

Notes: Summary SAP-1 is a sphingolipid activator protein found in human tissues required for the enzymatic hydrolysis of GM1 ganglioside and sulfatide. It appears to be missing in patients who have a genetic lipidosis resembling juvenile metachromatic leukodystrophy. Using rabbit antibodies against human SAP-1 it could be visualized in extracts from cultured human skin fibroblasts after sodium dodecylsulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, followed by electroblotting to nitrocellulose membrane and immunochemical staining (Western blotting). A series of 23 human-Chinese hamster ovary cell hybrids containing different human chromosomes were examined. The parent Chinese hamster ovary cells did not have a reacting protein in the region of human SAP-1. Only in the eight hybrid clones containing human chromosome 10 was a reacting protein identified. Other chromosomes were excluded by this method. Therefore the gene for SAP-1 and the genetic mutation resulting in a fatal lipidosis are located on human chromosome 10.

Notes: Abstract The fatigue behaviour of carbon fibre/PEEK composite is compared with that of carbon/ epoxy material of similar construction, particularly in respect of the effect of hygrothermal conditioning treatments. Laminates of both materials were of 0/90 lay-up, and they were tested in repeated tension at 0° and at 45° to the major fibre axis. The superior toughness of the polyether ether ketone and its better adhesion to the carbon fibres results in composites of substantially greater toughness than that of the carbon/epoxy material, and this is reflected in the fatigue behaviour of the carbon fibre/PEEK. The tougher PEEK matrix inhibits the development of local fibre damage and fatigue crack growth, permitting a 0/90 composite with compliant XAS fibres to perform as well in fatigue as an epoxy laminate with stiffer HTS fibres. Hygrothermal treatments have no effect on the fatigue response of either material in the 0/90 orientation. The fatigue response of a cross-plied carbon/PEEK laminate in the ±45° orientation is much better than that of equivalent carbon/epoxy composites, again because the superior properties of the thermoplastic matrix.

Notes: Fast atom bombardment (FAB) and collisional activation dissociation (CAD) mass-analysed ion kinetic energy (MIKE) spectra have confirmed the structures of retinyl phosphate (Ret-P), retinyl phosphate mannose (Ret-P-Man) and guanosine 5′-diphospho-D-mannose (GDP-Man). Ret-P-Man was made in vitro while Ret-P and GDP-Man were chemically synthesized. Positive ion FAB mass spectrometry of Ret-P showed an observable short-lived spectrum with a mass ion at m/z 367 [M + H]+, and a major fragment ion at m/z 269 [M+H—H3PO4]+. Negative ion FAB mass spectrometry of Ret-P showed a strong stable spectrum with a parent ion at m/z 365 [M—H]-, a glycerol (G) adduct ion at m/z 457 [M—H+G]- and a dimer ion at m/z 731 [2M—H]-. GDP-Man showed an intense spectrum with parent ion at m/z 604 [M—H]- and cationized species at m/z 626 [M+Na-2H]- and 648 [M+2Na-3H]-. Negative ion FAB mass spectrometry of Ret-P-Man showed a parent ion at m/z 527 [M—H]- and a fragment ion at m/z 259 [C6H12PO9]-. The CAD-MIKE spectra showed structurally significant fragment ions at m/z 442 and 361 for the [M—H]- ion of GDP-Man, and at m/z 509, 406, 364 and 241 for the [M—H]- ion of Ret-P-Man. FAB and CAD-MIKE spectra have been applied successfully to confirm the structure of Ret-P-Man made in vitro from Ret-P and GDP-Man.
