Notes: Summary We have examined the effects of 7 days treatment with beta adrenoceptor antagonists in 8 healthy volunteers in a placebo controlled, crossover study. We investigated three beta-adrenoceptor antagonists (atenolol, oxprenolol, and propranolol), which have differing profiles of selectivity and partial agonist properties (intrinsic sympathomimetic activity, ISA). We studied adrenaline-induced hypokalaemia, the vasodilator response to an infusion of adrenaline (0.06 µg·kg−1·min−1 for 90 min), and lymphocyte beta2-adrenoceptor number, determined by (-) [125I]-iodocyanopindolol binding, and measured these variables both before and after 7 days of treatment. The beta2-mediated depressor response to adrenaline infusion was abolished by propranolol and oxprenolol but persisted after atenolol. In contrast, the hypokalaemia induced by adrenaline was abolished by all three beta-blockers. Lymphocyte beta2-adrenoceptor number increased significantly following propranolol treatment, but not after oxprenolol for atenolol. We conclude that up-regulation of lymphocyte beta2-adrenoceptors is dependent on beta2-receptor blockade and is modified by ISA. The reversal of the hypokalaemic response by atenolol suggests that beta1 receptors may contribute to the former effect. Alternatively, since different populations of beta2-adrenoceptors differ in their susceptibility to antagonists there may also be differences in agonist coupling to beta2-responses between tissues.

Notes: A pump/probe laser approach is utilized to investigate in a time-resolved manner the photochemistry of copper coordination complexes in the gas phase. These compounds are metal atom precursors for photochemical laser metal vapor deposition. Dissociation is effected by a KrF excimer laser and the copper atoms are detected via laser induced fluorescence. Evidence is provided that suggests that under excimer laser photolysis, the metal atom generation may proceed via unimolecular decomposition.

Notes: 1. The effects of age on α-adrenoceptor responses, sensitivity and number were studied in rabbits aged from 1 to 36 months.2. Three types of investigation were carried out: conscious animal studies, isolated tissue studies and radioligand binding studies.3. Specific [3H]-prazosin binding decreased with age in both spleen and heart suggesting that the number of α1-receptors declined at least in the tissues studied. The specific binding of [3H]-clonidine to spleen membranes and [3H]-yohimbine to platelets was not affected by age.4. In vitro responsiveness to α-adrenoceptor agonists decreased with age in abdominal aorta and renal artery, while the affinity of adrenoceptors for prazosin (pA2) was not altered. The decrease may be non-specific as responses to potassium were also altered. No change in α2-adrenoceptor mediated platelet aggregation was observed.5. No change in pressor or depressor responses to full adrenoceptor agonists or to antagonists was observed in vivo. However, responses to clonidine, which is a partial agonist at α1-adrenoceptors, were decreased.6. While aging influenced α-adrenoceptor subtypes differently, there was no direct relation between functional changes and number of receptors.

Notes: SUMMARY1. Autoradiographic techniques have been used to examine the location of β-adrenoceptors in the heart and β-adrenoceptors, substance P receptors and muscarinic cholinoceptors in blood vessels.2. Both β1-adrenoceptors and β2-adrenoceptors were present in guinea-pig and human heart, on the myocardium and associated with the cardiac nerves and blood vessels.3. Nerves on the vasculature and vascular smooth muscle contained β-adrenoceptors and muscarinic cholinoceptors.4. Receptors for substance P and β-adrenoceptors, but not muscarinic cholinoceptors were present on endothelial cells.

Notes: A double-beam interferometer which incorporates quasioptical components developed in this laboratory has been used to measure near millimeter-wave dielectric properties of a variety of ceramic materials. We report here the results obtained on samples of various standard and advanced ceramics including alumina, silicon nitride, beryllia, and boron nitride. Results are compared with the data obtained by other researchers on similar samples.

Notes: We report here on an experiment in which picosecond electron pulses, produced by a compact radiation frequency (rf) electron gun, were used to excite a rectangular waveguide, generating 5 ps pulses of radiation with a bandwidth of ∼200 GHz. The interaction of the electron pulses with the waveguide can be modeled quite simply by performing a harmonic expansion of the pulse train produced by the electron gun and employing Poynting's theorem to compute the power coupled into the modes of the waveguide by each harmonic. The resulting model for the distribution of spectral power yields good agreement with the observed spectrum. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Summary. Catecholamines were measured in maternal venous, and mixed umbilical cord blood. Maternal catecholamines were significantly (P〈0·01) reduced by epidural analgesia with a 36% reduction in nor-adrenaline and a 33% reduction in adrenaline. Fetal catecholamines were elevated at birth with a 3–8 fold increase in noradrenaline but not adrenaline during spontaneous vaginal delivery. The lowest fetal catecholamines were obtained in the group delivered under epidural analgesia; lower plasma catecholamines were not associated with adverse respiratory effects. Fetal platelets showed impaired a2-adrenoceptor function with absent aggregatory responses to adrenaline in vitro. The defect in platelet function was unlikely to be related to changes in the number of fetal platelet α-receptors or to changes in receptor affinity for adrenaline, as fetal platelets failed to aggregate to adrenaline from deliveries with high and low cord blood catecholamines.
