Notes: We report the phototransmission measurement of strained-layer InxGa1−x As/GaAs single quantum well structures at room temperature. The spectra obtained show distinct features of excitons in the single quantum wells. Fitting of the phototransmission spectrum indicates that the excitonic transition energy modulation is the main mechanism. The phototransmission can be used as a supplement to photoreflectance due to its sensitivity and convenience.

Notes: The photodissociation of Kr+n (3≤n≤11) cluster ions is observed for the first time in the 565 to 630 nm wavelength range. Kr+3 has a photodissociation cross section of (8.1±0.8)×10−17 cm2 at 612 nm, while Kr+4 and Kr+5 are found to have larger photodissociation cross sections than Kr+3 with a slightly red-shifted spectrum. Only Kr+ is detected as a photofragment of Kr+3, while in the Kr+n (4≤n≤7) experiments, both Kr+2 and Kr+ photofragments are seen. As size n increases from 7 to 11, Kr+ disappears and Kr+3 appears. Laser power studies show that all are single photon photodissociation processes. For higher order Kr+n clusters (4≤n≤7) the intensity ratio between the two photodissociation products Kr+2 and Kr+ is dependent on the wavelength of the laser light used in the photodissociation, but independent of the polarization direction of the laser. Translational energy analysis of the photofragments is used to investigate the photodissociation mechanisms. In contrast to the photodissociation of Kr+3, where two types of Kr+ photofragments with different values of translational energy release are observed, only one type of Kr+2 photofragment, with zero kinetic energy release is found in the Kr+4 photodissociation. These findings are discussed in terms of the dynamics of photodissociation and possible structures of these cluster ions.

Notes: Abstract This paper shows that the nonlinear ABS algorithm [1] can be viewed as inexact Newton method [3]. From this point of view, the truncated nonlinear ABS algorithm is established and its convergence property is discussed.

Notes: Abstract Isothermal melt, fiber-spinning was recently analyzed by means of a nonlinear, integral, constitutive equation that incorporates shear history effects, spectrum of relaxation times, shear-thinning, and extension thinning or thickening when either the drawing force or the draw ratio is specified. The predictions agreed with experimental data on spinning of polystyrene, low-density polyethylene, and polypropylene melts. The predicted apparent elongational viscosity along the threadline (which, as shown in this work, must be identical to that measured experimentally by fiber spinning type of elongational rheometers) is compared with the true elongational viscosity predicted by the same constitutive equation under well-defined experimental conditions of constant extension rate, independent of any strain history. It is concluded that the apparent elongational viscosity, as measured by fiber-spinning, approaches the true elongational viscosity at low Weissenberg numbers (defined as the product of the liquid's relaxation time multiplied by the extension rate). At moderate Weissenberg numbers, the two viscosities may differ by an order of magnitude and their difference grows even larger at high Weissenberg numbers.

Notes: Summary Juvenile hormone production by the corpora allata of the adult female cockroach, Diploptera punctata, can be modulated by treatment with the biogenic amine, octopamine. Endogenous octopamine has been identified within the CA, using HPLC and electrochemical detection. Treatment with octopamine results in a sinusoidal, dose-dependent inhibition of JH biosynthesis by CA from day 2 virgin females, with maximal inhibition occurring at 10-10 M and 10-4 M. In day 4 and day 8 mated female corpora allata octopamine inhibited JH biosynthesis at 5·10-5 M. Although the elevation of either cAMP or cGMP within the CA is known to be associated with an inhibition of JH biosynthesis, treatment with high concentrations of octopamine results in an increase in the level of cAMP but not cGMP. This effect is both dose- and time-dependent. Octopamine treatment also initiates changes in the passive membrane responses of the CA. Superfusion of CA with octopamine results in a pronounced hyperpolarization of CA cells and an increase in the electrotonic potential (indicative of the degree of electrical coupling between CA cells). This effect could be blocked by the octopamine receptor blocker phentolamine. Treatment with octopamine or phentolamine also blocked the hyperpolarization of CA cells normally associated with electrical stimulation of the axon tracts innervating the CA. We hypothesize that octopamine may be a natural neuromodulator of JH production by CA, regulating ion channels in CA cells themselves as well as release of the inhibitory neuropeptide, allatostatin, from the terminals within the CA.
