Notes: Abstract An adaptive remeshing procedure for solving Navier-Stokes incompressible fluid flow problems is presented in this paper. This procedure has been implemented using the error estimator developed by Zienkiewicz and Zhu (1987, 1989) and a semi-implicit time-marching scheme for Navier-Stokes flow problems (Zienkiewicz et al. 1990). Numerical examples are presented, showing that the error estimation and adaptive procedure are capable of monitoring the flow field, updating the mesh when necessary, and providing nearly optimal meshes throughout the calculation, thus making the solution reliable and the computation economical and efficient.

Notes: The governing equations for the interaction of two immiscible fluids within a deforming porous medium are formulated on the basis of generalized Biot theory. The displacement of the solid skeleton, the pressure and saturation of wetting fluid are taken as primary unknowns of the model. The finite element method is applied to discretize the governing eqations in space. The time domain numerical solution to the coupled problem is achieved by using an unconditionally stable direct integration procedure. Examples are presented to illustrate the performance and capability of the approach.

Notes: Direct and indirect approximations using sets of non-singular, complete Trefftz functions, i.e. the complete systems of solutions, have been successfully applied to harmonic problems.1 In this paper, the procedure is applied to a more complex situation - plane elasticity problems. The examples show that the present method can avoid the difficulties relating to singular integration and has good accuracy compared with traditional boundary elements.

Notes: A new superconvergence recovery technique for finite element solutions is presented and discussed for one dimensional problems. By using the recovery technique a posteriori error estimators in both energy norm and maximum norm are presented for finite elements of any order. The relation between the postprocessing and residual types of energy norm error estimators has also been demonstrated.

Notes: This paper presents the ‘flow formulation’ approach applicable to both compressible and incompressible forming analysis. Appropriate error estimates and adaptive remeshing schemes are described for updated co-ordinate analysis. Several numerical examples are given. These are backward-forward extrusion and thermally coupled extrusion of pore-free materials, followed by cylinder upsetting, and tapered die extrusion of porous materials. The simulation of the deformation is shown as well as the distribution of effective strain and density at different time stages. The procedures are automatic and are incorporated in a general purpose code FEMMETA.

Notes: The paper outlines the theory of generalized plasticity in which yield and plastic potential surfaces need not be explicitly defined, and shows how a very effective general model describing the behaviour of sands and of clays under monotonic or transient loading can be developed. The model is currently one of the simplest and yet one of the most effective ones for describing the full range of behaviour. The hierarchical structure of the model limits the number of parameters which have to be experimentally determined for a given material to those strictly necessary for the problem at hand.A discussion of currently used models is included.

Notes: In this paper we show how an adaptive, error-controlled, mesh-refinement procedure can be used effectively to capture localization and shear banding phenomena. Use of directionally elongated meshes is also discussed.

Notes: The performance of the iterative procedure used for the explicit characteristic - Galerkin method in the solution of advection-dominated problems is investigated here in the implicit case. The procedure is conditionally stable, and here its stability limit is compared to that of time stepping. It is shown that in a limited range of values of the implicitness parameter θ it is possible to generate explicit methods by use of the iterative solution procedure. This is true, in particular, at θ = ⅓; with this choice the algorithm generated is more accurate, has a wider stability margin and lower cost (for linear problems) than the usual choice θ = 0. Because of these properties, this algorithm might be used for further improvement of the performance of fluid-dynamics codes.
