Notes: Abstract A novel method for the multiple crack problems in a finite plate is proposed in this paper. The basic stress functions of the solution consist of two parts. One is the Fredholm integral equation solution for the crack problem in an infinite plate, and the other is that of the weighted residual method for general plane problems. The combined stress functions are used in the analysis and the boundary conditions on the crack surfaces and the boundary are considered. After the coefficients of the functions have been determined, the stress intensity factors (SIF) at the crack tips can be calculated. Some numerical examples are given and it was observed that when the cracks are very short, the results compare very favorably with the existing results for an infinite plate. Furthermore, the influence of the boundary can be considered. This method can be used for arbitrary multiple crack problems in a finite plate.

Notes: Abstract Based on Timoshenko- Mindlin kinematic hypotheses and Hamilton's principle, a dynamic non-linear theory for general laminated circular cylindrical shells with transverse shear deformation is developed. A multi-mode solution for periodic inplane loads is formulated for the non-linear dynamic stability of an anti-symmetric angle-ply cylinder with its ends elastically restrained against rotation. The resulted equations in terms of time function are solved by the incremental harmonic balance method.

Notes: Abstract The static interaction problem between an elastic plate and infinite medium is studied by the semi-numerical (in one direction) and semi-analytical (in two directions) method-semianalytical element method, a simple practical and effective method for coupled analysis between above-ground structure and infinite soil medium with complex material character in engineering.

Notes: The fourth-order Zakharov equation for interfacial waves of two-layered fluids with finite depths is derived to include quintet interactions. Using this new equation the class I and class II instability and bifurcation of a two-dimensional Stokes interfacial wave into a three-dimensional steady wave is studied. Results are in good agreement with those by numerical calculations from the full unapproximated water wave and with experimental data.

Notes: Abstract The spline-finite-strip method in conjunction with the subparametric mapping concept is employed in the analysis of arbitrary shaped plates. Numerical examples of static and free vibration analyses are included to demonstrate the accuracy, veratility and efficiency of the proposed method.

Notes: Abstract  With regard to the C0 plate bending elements, the constraints resulting from the Kirchhoff condition are separated into two sets. The first set is called the zero θ constraint and should be released so that there is no shear locking. The second set is called the w-θ constraint and should be imposed to determine the element shear strain. We take the line segment integral of the Kirchhoff condition to establish the rational version of w-θ constraint which ensures the resulting element to pass the patch test. In such a way, the 4, 8 and 9-node C0 bending models are presented as a general formulation. The resulting elements, in particular the 9-node one, show excellent numerical performance.

Notes: Abstract A combination of the weighted residual method and elasto-viscoplastic theory is used to study the plastic zone and the limit load of centre-cracked plate. A new set of displacement functions has been assumed, and a series of governing equations for elasto-plastic analysis are derived. Numerical examples show that this method offers good accuracy but requires very little computer time.

Notes: Abstract We examined nine patients with histologically proven nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), treated with radiotherapy, using dynamic susceptibility contrast MRI (DSC-MRI). In eight there was clinical evidence of radionecrosis of the temporal lobe, and one was examined for local recurrence in the nasopharynx. All patients had either high-signal finger-like or cystic lesions in the temporal lobes on T2-weighted images. Heterogeneous contrast enhancement occurred in all patients. Relative regional cerebral blood volume (rrCBV) mapping revealed marked hypoperfusion in all patients. One underwent bilateral temporal lobectomy and radionecrosis was confirmed histologically.
