    Notes: Abstract Blood group P1 expression was scored by direct agglutination in 32 patients who had previously developed post-enteropathic haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS). Sixty-six children of similar ages undergoing venepuncture for other renal disorders acted as controls. The expression of P1 in controls was that expected from the normal caucasian population, 23% being negative. By contrast, there was an excess of HUS patients with weak or absent expression of P1 (χ2 for linear trend 5.45,P〈0.02), and this was particularly evident in those with a poor outcome. Verotoxin (VT), which is associated with HUS, requires the terminal disaccharide of the P1 antigen to bind to cells, and after internalization disrupts the transcription of ribonucleic acid. Mature erythrocytes do not synthesize protein and may be toxin resistant. We postulate that strong expression of P1 antigen may promote the binding of VT to red cells and thus reduce the dose to vulnerable nucleated cleated endothelial cells. P1 positivity may be protective, and P1 negativity a risk factor in HUS.

    Notes: Abstract Polymers of L-lactic acid are shown to promote plant growth. Dry weight of duckweed (Lemna minor L.) and corn (Zea mays L) was more than doubled when plants were grown in media containing the dimer of L-lactic acid, L-lactoyllactic acid. Higher polymers were equally effective at increasing plant biomass. Monomeric lactic acid and polymers of D-lactic acid showed no biological activity. Increased plant biomass was accompanied by increased chlorophyll accumulation and root growth. Promotion of chlorophyll accumulation and biomass may be due to increased ability to assimilate nutrients as plants treated with L-lactoyllactic acid showed no decrease in biomass when grown in medium that was growth limiting for control plants.

    Notes: Abstract A new, highly automated method for measuring plane motion, pattern mapping, has been developed for rigidbody motion and strain analysis. Pattern mapping employs image processing and syntactic pattern recognition principles to recognize a known pattern before and after motion. In this paper, the Lagrangian definition of motion was used to map points in the two images, and the map was used to determine plane motion. Full-image analysis is thoroughly demonstrated.

    Notes: Abstract A two-dimensional hybrid experimental-numerical technique for elastic-plastic stress analysis is presented. This technique results from merging two relatively new technologies in engineering mechanics: boundary-element methods and image processing. A syntactic pattern recognition scheme, termed ‘displacement pattern matching’ (DPM), determines the displacement boundary conditions which are used in an elasticplastic boundary-element method (EPBEM) code. The result is an automated stress-analysis tool. Displacement pattern matching is a process where displacements are measured by tracking an arbitrary array of ‘black’ spots on a ‘white’ specimen. The digitized images of the specimen are compared in a double-exposure format to determine displacements. Displacement pattern matching is a full-field technique, with spatial resolution on the order of. 1 pixels. Displacement pattern matching supplies the actual specimen displacement increments to the EPBEM code which is based on a von Mises, isotropic work-hardening constitutive model. Given these displacements and free surface conditions, EPBEM is able to incrementally calculate the internal state of stress at selected locations. Results obtained for a variety of geometries and loading conditions compared well with ANSYS finite-element solutions and selected published experimental solutions and therefore are encouraging.

    Notes: Abstract We have previously described anin vitro immunohistochemical test employing anti-receptor antibodies, for demonstrating the nuclear binding characteristics of estrogen receptors (ER) in breast carcinomas. Based on a retrospective analysis of twenty-five patients with estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) breast cancer who were treated with hormone therapy and whose clinical responses were evaluable, we were able to demonstrate that this test may be valuable to predict which, among the ER+ tumors (whether or not they are progesterone receptor positive, PR+), are likely to respond to hormone therapy and which may fail. While tumors in which ER exhibited abnormalities in nuclear binding behavior (ligand-independent nuclear binding or no nuclear binding) failed hormone therapy (16 out of 19 patients), those in which nuclear binding of ER appeared normal (ligand-dependent) in thein vitro test, responded to hormone therapy (5/6 patients). While our previous report dealt with the procedural details, specificity of the reagents, and the design of the study, this report addresses the clinical aspects of this study and response correlation.

    Notes: Abstract The fish community of the Forth estuary, Scotland, has several components — estuarine resident species, diadromus migratory species, marine and freshwater adventitious species, marine juvenile migrants using the area as a nursery, and adults of marine species with seasonal migrations. The population changes during the period 1981–1988 in six species representative of the last two categories are described here. The species are the juvenile gadoids, whiting, Merlangius merlangus (L.) and cod, Gadus morhua L., juvenile flatfish, plaice, Pleuronectes platessa L. and common dab, Limanda limanda (L.), and the adult clupeids, sprat, Sprattus sprattus (L.) and herring, Clupea harengus L. The species' population changes are described in relation to aspects of wider significance such as commercial fishing for these species in North Sea areas. In particular, the underlying decline of the juvenile cod populations since 1981 in the Forth Estuary is discussed in relation to the recent reduction in commercial fishing quotas.

    Notes: The development of a finite element program specifically designed to simulate thermoforming in complex three-dimensional geometries is described. The large strain finite element model developed for simulating thermoforming processes is based on a total Lagrangian formulation which results in a nonlinear system of equations that must be solved iteratively. The nonlinear material behavior and contact between the polymer and mold surf aces ieads to additional complications in the numerical solution of the thermoforming simulation problem. In an effort to verify the accuracy of the finite element model developed in this study, analyses are compared with measurements obtained from three-dimensional three-formed parts.
