    Notes: Abstract: Rats fed either a safflower oil (α-linolenate-deficient) or a perilla oil (α-linolenate-sufficient) diet through two generations (F1) showed significant differences in the brightness-discrimination learning task. In this task, correct responses were lever-pressing responses, which were reinforced with dietary pellets, and incorrect responses were those with no reinforcement. The inferior learning performance in the safflower oil group was caused mainly by the inferior ability to rectify the incorrect responses through the learning sessions. In the safflower oil group after the learning task, the average densities of synaptic vesicles in the terminals of the hippocampus CA1 region were decreased by nearly 30% as compared with those in the perilla oil group, and it is notable that this difference was not detected without the learning task. These results suggest that dietary oil-induced morphological changes in synapses in the hippocampus of rats are related to the differential learning performance and that the turnover rate of synaptic vesicles in the hippocampus may be an important factor affecting learning performance.

    Notes: Abstract: Biochemical characteristics of brain microsomal membranes were examined before and after the brightness-discrimination learning tasks in rats that were fed either safflower oil (α-linolenate-deficient) or perilla oil (α-linolenate-sufficient) diets. We detected small changes in the chain elongation system for polyunsaturated fatty acids in microsomes, whereas no significant difference was detected in the inositol trisphosphate-induced calcium release and ATP-induced calcium uptake profiles of microsomes between the two dietary groups. The calcium ion-induced aggregation rate of microsomes was determined in both groups. We found that the aggregation rate of microsomes in the safflower oil group was significantly greater than that in the perilla oil group. The difference in susceptibility of microsomal membrane phospholipids to phospholipase A2 between the groups was obvious, and the amount of released fatty acids by phospholipase A2 from the perilla oil group microsomes was nearly half of that from the safflower oil group microsomes after the learning task. Susceptibility of sialic acids on the brain microsomal membranes to exogenous sialidase was different only after the learning task in the safflower and perilla oil groups. These results suggest that the biochemical characteristics of membrane surfaces of brain microsomes are affected significantly by the learning task itself in a dietary oil-dependent manner.

    Notes: The phase transformation of graphitelike BN (h-BN) to wurtzite-type high-pressure BN (w-BN) was investigated through shock-recovery techniques under quasihydrodynamic and nonhydrodynamic shock compressions and under various strain conditions. The experimental results support a diffusionless mechanism, by which the hydrodynamic c-axis compression of h-BN is preferred. This mechanism is topologically considered based on the relationship of crystal structures between h-BN and w-BN. The presence of deviatoric stress and strain depresses the yield of w-BN and the development of w-BN (100) relative to (002). © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Cytologic evaluation of conjunctival epithelium using Cytobrush-S: value of slide preparation by ThinPrep technique Recent clinical trials have indicated that an automated smear apparatus (ThinPrep process) of sample preparation has great diagnostic sensitivity. In this study, conjunctival brush cytology prepared using the ThinPrep method was applied in ocular surface disorders especially for dry eye status. To assess its diagnostic value in cellular samples, 17 patients with keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS) and 10 normal volunteer patients were examined using this technique. Conjunctival cells from normal controls revealed fine chromatin and polyhedral cytoplasm without having keratinized cytoplasm. On the other hand, the cellular samples from KCS revealed increased keratinized cells with pyknotic nuclei. They also contained extremely elongated cells. In KCS patients, the mean number of keratinized cells was significantly higher (34.1 cells/300 cells) than that of the normal control group (0.2 cells/300 cells). In patients with KCS, inflammatory cell counts were also higher than those of normal controls. Conjunctival cytology by means of the ThinPrep method obviously deserves additional trials as an adjunct in the cytology of dry eye states, especially in quantitative ocular evaluation for various ocular lesions.

    Notes: We report a 79-year-old woman with primary cutaneous plasmacytoma in whom polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to demonstrate the monoclonality of the tumour. Four years after presentation, further skin lesions occurred and PCR again showed evidence of monoclonality despite the histology being non-specific. The reported frequency of multiple primary cutaneous plasmacytoma is increasing, and the mortality rate of patients with multiple lesions is three times that of those with a solitary lesion. PCR may be a useful technique for assessing such patients at presentation.

    Notes: The crystal structure of C60 at liquid helium temperature was examined by the electron diffraction method using an imaging plate and cryo-TEM (transmission electron microscopy). The crystal of C60 was so thin that the electron scattering from this sample was able to be treated kinematically. However, the least-squares fitting among observed and kinematically calculated diffraction intensities resulted in an R-factor of 0.23 for a structure model with only one major orientation. Similar large R-factors are usually reported in the electron crystallography of thin crystals, in which a single perfect structure was assumed as a model structure. By considering structural disorders in the C60 crystal, however, the R-factor could be reduced to 0.12, when a minor crystal in a different orientation and also the f.c.c. (face-centered cubic) component were introduced to the model in addition to the major orientation crystal. Disorder in the crystal might be as important a factor as the dynamical scattering effect to be considered in electron crystallography for analyzing structures of thin crystals.

    Notes: Abstract The polymerization process in a solution was examined by SAXS and cryo-TEM in the case of chemical polymerization of pyrrole in aqueous solution using sodium cellulose sulfonate (SCS) and FeCl3 as oxidizing agents. Observations with SAXS and cryo-TEM indicated the formation of micelle of SCS in SCS + water system. By adding FeCl3 in the solution, large spherical aggregates were formed as revealed by cryo-TEM, which is considered to be a precursor for the polymer spherical particles produced with a constant diameter.
