    Notes: The fundamental process that underlies volume transmission in the brain is the extracellular diffusion of neurotransmitters from release sites to distal target cells. Dopaminergic neurons display a range of activity states, from low-frequency tonic firing to bursts of high-frequency action potentials (phasic firing). However, it is not clear how this activity affects volume transmission on a subsecond time scale. To evaluate this, we developed a finite-difference model that predicts the lifetime and diffusion of dopamine in brain tissue. We first used this model to decode in vivo amperometric measurements of electrically evoked dopamine, and obtained rate constants for release and uptake as well as the extent of diffusion. Accurate predictions were made under a variety of conditions including different regions, different stimulation parameters and with uptake inhibited. Second, we used the decoded rate constants to predict how heterogeneity of dopamine release and uptake sites would affect dopamine concentration fluctuations during different activity states in the absence of an electrode. These simulations show that synchronous phasic firing can produce spatially and temporally heterogeneous concentration profiles whereas asynchronous tonic firing elicits uniform, steady-state dopamine concentrations.

    Notes: Elevated levels of p25 and constitutive activation of CDK5 have been observed in AD brains. This has led to the hypothesis that increased p25 levels could promote neurofibrillary tangles (NFT) through CDK5-mediated hyperphosphorylation of tau, the principal component of NFTs. We examined p25 immunoreactivity in brains from sporadic and familial AD cases, as well as other neurologic diseases that exhibit NFT, such as Down's syndrome (DS), Pick's disease (Pick), corticobasal degeneration (CBD), progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), frontotemporal dementia (FTD). Neither the p25 immunoreactivity nor the p25/p35 ratio was elevated in the AD brains or in the other tauopathies (n = 34) compared with controls (n = 11). Although Aβ peptides have been suggested to activate calpain-mediated cleavage of p35 to p25 in cultured neurons, p25 levels in brains of TgCRND8 mice, which express high levels of brain Aβ peptides, were similar to those of non-Tg littermates. Our data suggest that high Aβ levels in brain do not activate p35 proteolysis, and p25 is unlikely to be a causative agent for NFT formation in AD or other tauopathies.

    Notes: Organizational web sites have become a primary source of information for job seekers. To date, no research has attempted to determine which aspects of organizational web sites most influence job-seeker attraction to an organization. The current paper reports the results of two studies that examined how perceptions of organizational web site content (compensation, organizational culture, and training opportunities) and style (aesthetics and usability) influence organizational attraction. The present findings demonstrate that both the content and style of organizational web sites are important precursors of organizational attraction. These findings are discussed both in terms of their practical implications for designing effective recruitment web sites and their implications for future empirical work on organizational recruitment activities.

    Notes: This study explains racial/ethnic differences in serious adolescent violent behavior using a contextual model derived from prior urban, developmental, and criminological theory. Using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Adolescent Health, we compare involvement in serious violence among Asians, blacks, Hispanics, Native Americans, and whites. Results indicate that statistical differences between whites and minority groups are explained by variation in community disadvantage (for blacks), involvement in gangs (for Hispanics), social bonds (for Native Americans), and situational variables (for Asians). The lesser involvement in violence among Asians compared to blacks, Hispanics, and Native Americans is accounted for by similar factors. Differences in violent behavior among the latter three minority groups are not significant. Theoretical and policy implications of the findings are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract Galileo's explorations have revealed a remarkable variety of eruptive styles among Io's diverse volcanoes. Activity at hundreds of volcanic centers ranges from dormant through sporadic to continuous over the 20-year period of spacecraft observation. High temperature volcanism is common on Io, suggesting that the lavas are made up of mafic to ultramafic silicates rather than sulfur compounds. Io's largest plumes are driven by SO2 and sulfur-rich gasses vented from the silicate interior that produce prominent red pyroclastic deposits. Red deposits flag the source regions of many other ongoing or very recent eruptions. Smaller plumes are produced near the margins of active lava flows by explosive volatilization of the underlying or surrounding SO2. These plumes produce SO2 snowflakes that mantle existing topography. Io's volcanism drives significant variations in the atmosphere and plasma torus, yet most of the heat loss occurs through lava flows and by the quiet overturning of lava lakes without large-scale explosive activity. Although only a handful of Io's volcanoes have been directly observed to produce explosive eruptions, volcanic resurfacing is efficient enough to erase even small craters from Io's youthful surface.

    Notes: The T cell antigen receptor (TCR) is a multimeric complex composed of an antigen-binding clonotypic heterodimer and a signal transducing complex consisting of the CD3 dimers (CD3γε and CD3δε) and a TCR-ζ homodimer. In all jawed vertebrates there are two T cell lineages, αβ and γδ, distinguished by the clonotypic subunits contained within their TCRs (TCR-α and -β or TCR-γ and -δ, respectively). A third receptor complex, the preTCR, is only expressed on immature T cells. The preTCR, which contains the invariant pre-Tα (pTα) chain in lieu of TCR-α, plays a critical role in the early development of αβ lineage cells. The subunit composition of the signal transducing complexes of the pre-, αβ- and γδTCRs was previously thought to be identical. However, recent data demonstrate that there are significant differences in the signal transducing complexes of these three TCRs. For example, αβTCRs contain both CD3γε and CD3δε dimers, whereas γδTCRs contain only CD3γε dimers. Moreover, preTCR function appears to be unaffected in the absence of CD3δ, suggesting that CD3δε dimers are dispensable for pre-TCR assembly. In this review, we summarize current data relating to the subunit composition of the pre-, αβ- and γδTCRs and discuss how these structural differences may impact receptor signaling and αβ/γδ lineage determination.

    Notes: An automated in-line analytical system has been developed to provide near real-time results for partitioning interwell tracer testing (PITT) and surfactant enhanced aquifer remediation (SEAR). The analytical methodology is based on gas chromatography (GC) with flame ionization detection and direct aqueous injection. The system was constructed from both commercially available and custom-manufactured components that are linked electronically to facilitate autonomous operation. For the field trials presented herein, the in-line GC method provided superior or comparable PITT and SEAR data compared to conventional sample collection followed by shipment and analysis at a commercial analytical laboratory. Analytical precolumns were shown to effectively safeguard the integrity of the analytical column, despite the consecutive analysis of more than 1000 samples per PITT or SEAR. Additionally, the use of the in-line GC resulted in an 85% and 74% reduction in analytical costs per PITT and SEAR, respectively.

    Notes: The economic impact of information and communication technology (ICT) on the academic library and on the academic institution are discussed in terms of changes in the value chain of scientific information induced by the use of ICT. Argues that ICT is a very strong engine for change as it has the potential not only to transform the research information system, but also the educational information system or even the education system at large. Academic institutions will have to create their own publishing and archiving environments using the same technology as in research publishing. These developments will have a profound impact on the value chain of scientific information as it leads academic institutions to assume entirely new roles in this chain and to develop new capabilities. As well as a digital collection strategy, academic libraries will develop strategies for supporting e-learning and e-publishing. This leads to changes in the economic conditions at the institutional and also industrial level. The developments will be discussed in general.
