Notes: A new high-speed digital framing camera is described. The design is built around a rotating polygon mirror that provides a framing rate of 24 000 frames/s. The camera electronics digitizes an image into a 32×104 grid of pixels, where the second dimension of the grid can be varied and is determined by the 8 bit computer-aided measurement and control digitizer sampling rate. Available digitizer memory provides for 314 frames at this horizontal resolution. The advantages over other available high-speed framing cameras are (1) low cost of the system provided the digitizers are available, (2) rapid retrieval of a recorded event, and (3) the ease with which the system can be used. Sample results from an application in high-power arc photography are given to illustrate the system's spatial and temporal resolution.

Notes: Here we present a method using Fourier series representation of the potential to obtain the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions for a general isolated quantum well potential. We compare the method with analytical results in the case of a square well and get excellent agreement. Finally, we apply the method to two different graded-index, separate confinement heterostructure potentials of interest and compute the corresponding gain with k selection. We find the gain to be much narrower in energy range for multiple quantum wells as compared with a single quantum well.

Notes: We report the first observation of stimulated emission from a GaN film grown by ion-assisted molecular beam epitaxy. The observed near-UV optical emission power was a nonlinear function of the pump power density. The characteristics of the observed stimulated emission are similar to those observed recently from films grown with low-pressure metalorganic chemical vapor deposition techniques.

Notes: A 32-year-old woman with multiple sclerosis who developed non-injection-site-related fixed drug eruption with interferon-β-1b. Erythematous plaques started appearing 1 month after the drug was introduced, and increased in number following each administration. The histopathology of a skin biopsy was consistent with fixed drug eruption. The drug was subsequently ceased, with resolution of the rash 6 weeks later.

Notes: High-dose immunosuppression used in the treatment of pyoderma gangrenosum predisposes patients to opportunistic infections. A 66-year-old man presented with recalcitrant pyoderma gangrenosum in which the ulcer itself became infected with herpes simplex virus type 1. This patient was immunosuppressed with multiple agents including topical and oral corticosteroids, cyclosporin, mycophenolate mofetil, intravenous immunoglobulin and infliximab. However, the patient's ulcer continued to extend despite this. It was not until the presence of this virus was detected using polymerase chain reaction on a viral swab of the lesion and oral aciclovir was commenced that the ulcer began to heal. In addition, a fungal granuloma developed on this patient's left forearm as a complication of the potent immunosuppression, which was resolved following treatment with oral voriconazole.

Notes: The hypophysial portal vessels and anterior pituitary gland of adult male Wistar rats were exposed surgically. A hypophysial portal vessel was cannulated and infused for one minute with saline or thyrotrophin (TRH). Anterior pituitary glands were collected at 1, 5, 15, 30, or 60 minutes after cessation of infusion, for light and electron microscopic examination. Before and immediately after cannulation of a portal vessel, a 1-ml sample of blood was collected at 1, 5, 15, 30, or 60 minutes, from the femoral vein for radioimmunoassay (RIA) of growth hormone. Thyrotrophs from anterior pituitary glands of rats infused with TRH displayed emiocytic activity at all time-periods studied. Rough endoplasmic reticular (RER) cisternae were dilated at 15 minutes following infusion and remained dilated at 30 and 60 minutes. TRH was observed to stimulate emiocytic activity in most pituitary cell-types. Extensive dilations of RER cisternae were also observed in mammotrophs and gonadotrophs, but were not observed in somatotrophs or adrenocorticotrophs. The demonstration that thyrotrophs, mammotrophs, somatotrophs, and gonadotrophs respond to TRH suggests that some common features may be shared by these cells. Preliminary analysis of the RIA data show that TRH was potent in elevating radioimmunoassayable growth hormone levels. Significant increases (p 〈 0.02) in plasma GH levels were present at the earlier time periods studied (1, 5, and 15 minutes) following the infusion of TRH, but not at 30 or 60 minutes. These findings provide additional support for the non-specific action of TRH upon the various adenohypophysial cell types, and demonstrate that TRH stimulates these cells by a direct action on the adenohypophysis.
