    Notes: Microbial contamination and growth in distillate fuels has been described for seventyyears. The consequences have ranged from fouling of filters and injectors, to engine malfunctionand damage, fuel gauge malfunctions and aggravated corrosion of engines, fuel tanks, equipmentand facilities. The types of microbes present vary with the differences in fuel composition anddifferences in storage and use conditions. Anti-microbial strategies have traditionally includedprevention by ‘good housekeeping’ and ‘fire-brigade’ applications of biocides when there areoperational problems. Since 2002, first the aviation industry and later fuel suppliers and somemilitaries, have used simple on-site microbiological tests to monitor fuel and fuel systems and usethe results to take remedial actions before operational problems occur. This paper will review ourlatest knowledge of microbially influenced corrosion and of the new anti-microbial strategies whichare being successfully implemented to prevent it

    Notes: Neurone glial-related cell adhesion molecule (NrCAM) is a member of the L1 family of transmembrane cell adhesion receptors which are involved in the development and function of the mammalian nervous system. How these receptors interact with intracellular signalling pathways is not understood. To date the only identified binding partner to the cytoplasmic terminus of NrCAM is ankyrin G. We screened a developing rat brain cDNA yeast two-hybrid library with the cytoplasmic domain of NrCAM to identify further intracellular binding partners. We identified synapse associated protein 102 (SAP102) as a new binding partner for NrCAM. The interaction was confirmed biochemically using glutathione S-transferase (GST)-pull-down and tandem affinity purification, and also immunocytochemically as NrCAM and SAP102 co-localized in COS-7 and cerebellar granule cells. Binding was specific to NrCAM as neither neurofascin nor L1 bound SAP102, and this interaction was reliant on the last three amino acids of NrCAM. Additionally, NrCAM constructs whose last three amino acids had been deleted appeared to have a dominant negative effect on neurite extension of cerebellar granule cells. This is the first interaction reported for NrCAM, and its association with SAP102 suggests that it is part of a larger complex which can interact with many different signalling pathways.

    Notes: The transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE), or prion diseases are a group of transmissible neurodegenerative disorders of humans and animals. Although the infectious agent (the ‘prion’) has not yet been formally defined at the molecular level, much evidence exists to suggest that the major or sole component is an abnormal isoform of the host encoded prion protein (PrP). Different strains or isolates of the infectious agent exist, which exhibit characteristic disease phenotypes when transmitted to susceptible animals. In the absence of a nucleic acid genome it has been hard to accommodate the existence of TSE strains within the protein-only model of prion replication. Recent work examining the conformation and glycosylation patterns of disease-associated PrP has shown that these post-translational modifications show strain-specific properties and contribute to the molecular basis of TSE strain variation. This article will review the role of glycosylation in the susceptibility of cellular PrP to conversion to the disease-associated conformation and the role of glycosylation as a marker of TSE strain type.

    Notes: This article provides a review of the British Ability Scales, Second Edition (BAS II) for applied psychologists; it aims to describe the special features of the scale, highlighting implications for practice, as well as describing the developments in psychometry this scale represents in comparison with other widely used tests. Although the BAS has been in use since 1979 and represents a more contemporary psychometric model of human ability, with British norms, it is not as widely used in British research or applied psychological assessment as might be anticipated; traditional allegiances to the older, more established, Anglicised standardisation of the American Wechsler scales appear to persist.

    Notes: Objective: To review the literature on nipple pain and to delineate effective strategies for the prevention and treatment of nipple pain in breastfeeding mothers. Data Sources: Computerized searches on MEDLINE, Pre-MEDLINE, CINAHL, and the Cochrane Library. Study Selection: Articles from indexed journals relevant to the objective were reviewed from January 1983 to April 2004. Preference was given to research-based studies in English. Data Extraction: Data were extracted and organized under two headings: prevention of nipple pain or trauma and treatment of nipple pain or trauma. The Critical Appraisal Form by J. Briggs was used to extract the data from research-based articles. Data Synthesis: The health benefits of breastfeeding for mother and infant are well documented; however, nipple pain is a common reason reported by women for the early termination of breastfeeding. Several studies have compared various treatments for either the prevention of or treatment for nipple pain. These treatments include warm water compresses, tea bag compresses, heat, application of expressed mother's milk, lanolin, vitamin A, collagenase, dexpanthenol, hydrogel therapy, glycerin gel therapy, moist occlusive dressing, education regarding proper latch-on and positioning, and no treatment. Conclusions: No one topical agent showed superior results in the relief of nipple discomfort. The most important factor in decreasing the incidence of nipple pain is the provision of education in relation to proper breastfeeding technique and latch-on as well as anticipatory guidance regarding the high incidence of early postpartum nipple pain.

    Notes: The hydration of two high replacement composite cements (3:1 blast furnace slag:ordinary Portland cement (BFS:OPC), and 3:1 pulverized fuel ash:OPC (PFA:OPC)) with the addition of both SnCl2 and SnCl4 has been investigated and the results from X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) are presented. Adding 5% or 1% SnCl2·2H2O or SnCl4·5H2O to the mix water resulted in the formation of Friedel's salt, Ca3Al2O6.CaCl2·10H2O, and calcium hydroxo-stannate CaSn(OH)6, which also involved the consumption of calcium hydroxide. After 90 days hydration at lower levels of addition (i.e., 1%) there was no longer evidence for CaSn(OH)6, indicating that it too had been consumed in the pozzolanic reaction due to the lack of calcium hydroxide present. Results from SEM and EDS showed that bright regions between the BFS or PFA grains were tin containing and they were incorporated into the hydrated cement matrix. The tin was, therefore, localized rather than spread throughout and intimately incorporated into the microstructure.

    Notes: The process of evaporation-assisted formation of three-dimensional photonic crystals was studied. The photonic crystals were fabricated by stacking uniform-sized silica spheres into regularly arranged structure with solvent evaporation and sedimentation. Effects of important process parameters, including type of solvent (water and ethanol), system temperature (40° and 60°C), and material for sedimentation cell (quartz, polymethyl methacrylate, and Teflon), on structure regularity of the resulting photonic crystal were investigated. The structure regularity was evaluated with scanning electron microscope graphs and stop band depth achieved in optical absorption spectra. As revealed from the experimental results, photonic crystals of better quality were obtained by using suspending solvents of higher surface tension (water), lower system temperatures (40°C), and sedimentation cell materials of higher critical surface tension of wetting (quartz).

    Notes: We compared the analgesic efficacy and safety of remifentanil and pethidine via patient controlled analgesia for women in established uncomplicated labour. Women received either remifentanil 40 μg with a 2-min lockout (n = 20) or pethidine 15 mg with a 10-min lockout (n = 19). Visual analogue scores for pain during the study and for overall pain were similar for both groups (mean (SD) 6.4 (1.5) cm for remifentanil and 6.9 (1.7) cm for pethidine). The area under the curve for visual analogue scores of satisfaction with analgesia was higher for remifentanil than for pethidine (p = 0.001). Maternal arterial oxygen saturation was similar in both groups. Neurologic and Adaptive Capacity Scores at 30 min were higher for remifentanil than for pethidine (median (interquartile range [range]) 36 (34.5–37 [32–39]) vs 34 (33–35 [30–35]), respectively; p = 0.003).

    Notes: A number of studies over the years have reported that members of conservative Protestant churches tend to be less tolerant—that is, reluctant to extend civil liberties—vis-à-vis homosexuals. This paper explores several possible explanations for this pattern. In particular, we identify key aspects of conservative Protestant religious values and worldviews that may contribute to this pattern, and relevant hypotheses are tested using data from the 1988 General Social Survey. Results highlight the role of biblical literalism, as well as specific beliefs about the public nature of morality and the implications of perceived immoral conduct for collective well-being. We discuss the implications of these findings for the understanding of contemporary conservative Protestantism, as well as for future research on the nexus of religion, politics, and democratic citizenship.

    Notes: In the absence of RecA, expression of the Tus protein of Escherichia coli is lethal when ectopic Ter sites are inserted into the chromosome in an orientation that blocks completion of chromosome replication. Using this observation as a basis for genetic selection, an extragenic suppressor of Tus-mediated arrest of DNA replication was isolated with diminished ability of Tus to halt DNA replication. Resistance to tus expression mapped to a mutation in the stop codon of the topA gene (topA869), generating an elongated topoisomerase I protein with a marked reduction in activity. Other alleles of topA with mutations in the carboxyl-terminal domain of topoisomerase I, topA10 and topA66, also rendered recA strains with blocking Ter sites insensitive to tus expression. Thus, increased negative supercoiling in the DNA of these mutants reduced the ability of Tus–Ter complexes to arrest DNA replication. The increase in superhelical density did not diminish replication arrest by disrupting Tus–Ter interactions, as Tus binding to Ter sites was essentially unaffected by the topA mutations. The topA869 mutation also relieved the requirement for recombination functions other than recA to restart replication, such as recC, ruvA and ruvC, indicating that the primary effect of the increased negative supercoiling was to interfere with Tus blockage of DNA replication. Introduction of gyrB mutations in combination with the topA869 mutation restored supercoiling density to normal values and also restored replication arrest at Ter sites, suggesting that supercoiling alone modulated Tus activity. We propose that increased negative supercoiling enhances DnaB unwinding activity, thereby reducing the duration of the Tus–DnaB interaction and leading to decreased Tus activity.
