Notes: In this study, we found that the polymorphism and sintering behavior of silica can be affected by the size of starting particles. The formation of the stable tridymite phase, which is metastable unless a flux or mineralizer is present, is achieved with sintering of very fine silica particles of about 10 nm without the presence of a flux or mineralizer. Cristobalite phase is obtained as an intermediate as the amorphous phase transforms into the stable tridymite phase.

Notes: The process of evaporation-assisted formation of three-dimensional photonic crystals was studied. The photonic crystals were fabricated by stacking uniform-sized silica spheres into regularly arranged structure with solvent evaporation and sedimentation. Effects of important process parameters, including type of solvent (water and ethanol), system temperature (40° and 60°C), and material for sedimentation cell (quartz, polymethyl methacrylate, and Teflon), on structure regularity of the resulting photonic crystal were investigated. The structure regularity was evaluated with scanning electron microscope graphs and stop band depth achieved in optical absorption spectra. As revealed from the experimental results, photonic crystals of better quality were obtained by using suspending solvents of higher surface tension (water), lower system temperatures (40°C), and sedimentation cell materials of higher critical surface tension of wetting (quartz).

Notes: A new mixing rule developed for cubic equations of state equates the excess Helmholtz free energy at infinite pressure from an equation of state to that from an activity coefficient model. Use of the Helmholtz free energy insures that the second virial coefficient calculated from the equation of state has a quadratic composition dependence, as required by statistical mechanics. Consequently, this mixing rule produces the correct low- and high-density limits without being density-dependent.As a test, the mixing rule is used for ternary mixtures of cyclohexane + benzene + water, ethanol + benzene + water and carbon dioxide + n-propane + water, and all the constituent binaries. The new mixing rule and a simple cubic equation of state can be used for the accurate correlation of vapor-liquid and liquid-liquid equilibria for binary mixtures. Using the parameters obtained from binary systems, the phase behavior of ternary mixtures can be predicted. Also, unlike previous empirical mixing rules, this theoretically based mixing rule is equally applicable and accurate for simple mixtures containing hydrocarbons and inorganic gases and mixtures containing polar, aromatic and associating species over a wide range of pressures. This mixing rule makes it possible to use a single equation of state model with equal accuracy for mixtures usually described by equations of state and for those traditionally described by activity coefficient models. It is the correct bridge between these two classes of models.

Notes: Two issues involving the methodology used for on-line control of product quality in batch manufacturing processes are addressed: the generation of fast, data-driven process models and the use of such process models for on-line feedback control of product quality. The methodology is investigated using the example of the control of dispersity and molecular weight distribution in a batch reactor for emulsion polymerization of vinyl acetate. An artifical neural network (ANN) is used as a model to predict the quality as a function of the manipulated variables and on-line measurements. This model is constructed using an augmented dataset that integrates experimental information and knowledge from a mathematical model. The proposed model is compared with other types such as a theoretical model whose key parameters are fitted to experimental data. The hybrid ANN is superior to the parameter-fitting approach for this case. Experimental and simulation studies confirm the advantage of using the proposed model and the predictive control algorithm.
