Notes: In order to determine the magnitude and the position of the plasma current in a long pulsed tokamak such as the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER), it is urged to establish a reliable method which is free from the zero-level drift of the integrator as well as the radiation damage for the steady-state magnetic field measurement. For this purpose, we have developed a hybrid system, a combination of a conventional magnetic probe for the measurement of fast varying magnetic field and a rotating coil magnetic probe for that of slowly varying field. The rotating coil is energized by an air turbine to avoid electromagnetic interference and the induce signal with a constant rotation frequency is picked up through a transformer to eliminate mechanical contacts. An automatic gain control circuit is also designed for the compensation of rotation speed fluctuation. The system is proved to achieve a flat frequency response with a proper choice of cross over frequency for high- and low-frequency systems. The rotating coil probe is tested for over 170 h without any trouble. The probe was applied to the poloidal magnetic field measurement on the TRIAM-1M long pulsed tokamak, and proved to work satisfactorily. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Baking (Pb, La)(Zr, Ti)O3 capacitors in a hydrogen atmosphere causes a significant loss of remanent polarization even at 150 °C. The hysteresis variations depend on the polarization states during baking. The hysteresis loop showed voltage shifts when the capacitor was polarized before baking, whereas it became a cramped shape when the baking was carried out on a virgin capacitor. Although remanent polarization diminished in all cases, saturation polarization was not suppressed. The clamped hysteresis loop can be described as an average of two loops shifted to positive and negative voltages. The results indicate that the loss of remanent polarization is not due to the suppression of switching, but due to the shift of the hysteresis of each domain larger than the coercive voltage. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Species of Malakichthys are very similar to each other in general appearance but are distinguishable by spination on the lower jaw, features of the proximal-middle radial of the first anal-fin pterygiophore, the number of anal-fin soft rays and body depth.

Notes: Abstract The MR findings in a case of tumor extension into an inferior vena cava from a right renal angiomyolipoma are reported. The flow void demonstrated within the intracaval tumor thrombus on T1-weighted images was consistent with the so-called thread-and-streaks sign.

Notes: Abstract: High-Spin states of odd-odd 166Lu were populated using the 139La(30Si,3n )166Lu at a beam energy of 120 MeV. Twelve new -rays were placed on top of the previously known two rotational bands built upon and . Extending high-spin states up to 21+ and 25- for each band, we have observed the onset of band crossing near 0.35 MeV. The band crossing frequency of the yrast band is consistent with the neutron BC band crossing observed in lighter odd-odd Lu isotopes.

Notes: Brown balls, of a similar size but different shape to termite eggs, were found frequently in the piles of eggs of the subterranean termite Reticulitermes speratus. rDNA analysis identified the ball as the sclerotia of the fungus, Fibularhizoctonia sp. nov, which is phylogenetically closest to decay fungi, Athelia spp. Laboratory observation showed that the workers gathered the eggs and the sclerotia indiscriminately, even if they were widely scattered in a Petri dish, and piled them up in a specific place for egg care. We compared the morphology of the eggs with that of sclerotia of Fibularhizoctonia spp. and Athelia spp. in relation to egg carrying behaviour, and found that the workers could only carry the Fibularhizoctonia spp. sclerotia whose diameters were similar to the short diameter of the eggs. We also conducted a bioassay using termite eggs and dummy eggs (glass beads and sea sand) of two diameter-classes, coated with or without the egg-derived chemicals. The workers recognized the eggs based on a combination of the size, shape, and chemical cues. All the results suggested that the sclerotia mimic the eggs both morphologically and chemically. Finally, we found that the workers suppressed germination of sclerotia, and termite egg survival increased in the presence of sclerotia only if they were tended by the workers. If the workers were removed experimentally, the sclerotia germinated and grew by exploiting termite eggs. These results suggest that the sclerotia protect termite eggs from putative pathogens.

Notes: Abstract By the operation of research reactors, tritium-handling facilities, nuclear power plants, and a reprocessing facility around JAERI TOKAI, tritium is released into the environment in compliance with the regulatory standards. To investigate the levels of tritium concentration in environmental samples around JAERI, rain, air (vapor and hydrogen gas), and tissue-free water of pine needles were measured and analyzed from 1984 to 1993. Sampling locations were determined by taking into consideration wind direction, distance from nuclear facilities, and population distribution. The NAKA site (about 6 km west-northwest from the TOKAI site) was also selected as a reference point. Rain and tissue-free water of pine needles were sampled monthly. For air samples, sampling was carried out for two weeks by using the continuous tritium sampler. After the pretreatment of samples, tritium concentrations were measured by a low background liquid scintillation counter (detection limit is 0.8 Bq/l). Annual mean tritium concentrations in rain observed at six points for 10 years was 0.8 to 8.9 Bq/l, which decreased with distance from the nuclear facilities. Tritium concentrations in rain obtained at Chiba City were around 0.8 Bq/l (1987–1988) and those at the NAKA site were 0.8 to 3.8 Bq/l. Annual mean HTO concentrations in air at three points for 10 years were 9.2×10−2 to 1.1 Bq/m3, although HT concentrations in air, ranging from 1.7×10−2 to 5.8×10−2 Bq/m3, were not influenced by the operation of the nuclear facilities. Annual mean tritium concentrations in tissue-free water of pine needles at four points for 10 years were 1.4 to 31 Bq/l. Those at the NAKA site ranging from 1.4 to 6.2 Bq/l were in good agreement with the reported value by Takashima of 0.78 to 3.0 Bq/l at twenty-one locations in Japan. Monthly mean HTO concentrations in air for 10 years showed a good correlation with absolute humidity, while other samples showed no seasonal variation. Higher level tritium concentrations in rain, in air (vapor), and in tissue-free water of pine needles at the TOKAI site were caused by the tritium released from the nuclear facilities. The committed effective dose equivalent to the member of general public, estimated using the maximum tritium concentration in air (1.1 Bq/m3), was 0.23 μSv, which was about 1/4000 of dose limit for general public.

Notes: Abstract Transmission electron diffraction from repeatedly rubbed α-alumina revealed a structure that was created as the sum of the contributions of several different aluminas. Owing to the lack of regularity in the atomic arrangement, this structure may not be considered as being crystalline although it is not an amorphous structure. The transformation to this state can be one of the mechanisms of plastic deformation during repeated rubbing.
