    Notes: A new electron cyclotron resonance ion source has been designed and equipped with the new cyclotron at the Cyclotron and Radioisotope Center, Tohoku University. The ion source consists of a full permanent-magnet system with a microwave frequency of 14.5 GHz. The source has the following three main features: (1) V-style magnetization, (2) flat-bottomed magnetic-field distribution, and (3) field adjusting system. The measured magnetic-field strength in the plasma chamber is about 8% weaker than the calculated value. The extracted beam current is measured as the preliminary result. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Summary We examined changes in guanosine triphosphatedependent signal transduction mechanisms in the retina from the early stages of the streptozotocin-diabetic rat, a model for Type 1 (insulin-dependent) diabetes mellitus. Guanosine triphosphate binding, guanosine triphosphatase activity, and binding of (azido) guanosine triphosphate decreased significantly in the retina as early as 2 weeks after the induction of diabetes. The ability of guanosine triphosphate to inhibit forskolin-stimulatable adenyl cyclase was also abolished. These data suggest functional deterioration of G-proteins, especially Gi, in diabetic retina. Further studies using retinal rod outer segments revealed deterioration in light-sensitive, guanosine triphosphate-dependent functions of transducin in diabetic rats. Pertussis toxin-catalysed ADP ribosylation of the α subunit of transducin, a heterotrimeric G-protein of rod outer segments, was also reduced in diabetes. No functional effects were seen in purified subunits of transducin subjected to non-enzymatic glycation in vitro. On the other hand, incubation of non-diabetic rod outer segments with (12-0-tetradeconyl) phorbol-13-acetate, a protein kinase C agonist, in the presence of magnesium and adenosine triphosphate resulted in the reduction of guanosine triphosphate-binding and hydrolysis, thus indicating that protein kinase C may be involved in the regulation of these activities. The significance of these observations in the early visual abnormalities associated with diabetes is discussed.

    Notes: Abstract One of the wrist orthoses, the Senami Wrist Supporter (SWS), was applied to 203 rheumatoid wrists in 112 patients who had persistent wrist pain and restricted forearm rotation due to synovitis and instability at the distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ). The study was performed by sending out a questionnaire to the patients about the use of the SWS at home, and examining grip strength and forearm rotation with and without the use of the SWS. The average age of the patients was 61 years, and the average follow-up period was 18 months. The rate of compliance of wearing the SWS at home was 73% on average. It was higher in wrists of Larsen–Dale–Eek (LDE) grades 0, I, and II (normal, slight, and definite early abnormality) than in those of grades III, and IV (medium and severe destructive abnormality). Decreased pain was noted in 52% of the wrists at the time of applying the SWS. The SWS was not used in 10% of the wrists because of remission of pain at follow-up. Grip strength increased significantly (P 〈 0.01) and so did forearm rotation (P 〈 0.05) by the stabilizing effect of the SWS on the unstable DRUJ. The use of the SWS was confirmed to be an efficient measure to treat painful rheumatoid wrists with early stages of disease at the DRUJ.
