    Notes: A method of cathode heating using a laser was studied for an electron gun. In order to observe the practicality of the heating system, the characteristics of the laser-heated gun with a dispenser and LaB6 thermionic cathodes have been experimentally investigated. The direct laser irradiation is so efficient that the gun is equipped without heat shielding, a cooling system, or an electrical circuit in the gun chamber for cathode heating. Modeling, based on the experimental data, indicates that the cathode temperature is proportional to one-fourth power of the laser power and that laser power loss and conduction loss of heat in the gun assembly are negligible. An electron beam current density 0.48 A/cm2 was measured with 26 W laser power for a dispenser cathode of 0.06 cm2 emission area. Current density 0.16 A/cm2 with 25 W was recorded for a LaB6 cathode of area 0.12 cm2. Electron beam emittance has been measured by using the typical pepper-pot technique. It was observed that the growth of electron beam emittance was very small in the laser heating. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Forty-one patients with endodermal sinus tumors of the ovary (EST) (23: pure EST, nine: EST with dysgerminoma; and nine: EST with immature teratoma) were treated with cytoreductive surgery, with or without subsequent adjuvant chemotherapy including VAC or PVB. Clinical staging of these patients showed 23 in stage I, six in stage II and 12 in stage III and IV. The outcome was good in the patients with stage I or II disease, with 5- and 10-year survival rates of around 80%. In contrast, all except two patients with stage III or IV disease died within 2 years. Aggressive surgery did not change the outcome of patients with stage I disease. In addition, postoperative chemotherapy was necessary, but the choice of vincristine, actinomycin-D and cyclophosphamide (VAC) or cis-platin, vinblastine and bleomycin (PVB) did not make any difference. Based on the results of the present study, VAC or PVB chemotherapy, after cytoreductive surgery, is essential for cure and conservative surgery followed by VAC or PVB regimen should be recommended for young patients.

    Notes: Despite high primary response rates with cisplatin-based combination chemotherapy, the overall survival rate for advanced ovarian cancers remains dismal. We designed a new systematic treatment approach with a combination chemotherapy consisting of cisplatin, doxorubicin and cyclophosphamide (cyclic PAC chemotherapy), with the aim of improving survival rates with minimal disturbance of quality of life. Cyclic PAC chemotherapy is a three-step chemotherapy with three courses of the PAC regimen in each step. A total of nine courses with a 3-month drug-free period between each step were administered over a 15-month period to patients with clinical stage IC-IV ovarian cancer who had undergone cytoreductive surgery. Forty-eight patients with stage IC-IV disease (34 patients with stage III and IV disease) were treated with cyclic PAC chemotherapy. Thirty-four patients with stage IC-IV disease (23 patients with stage III and IV disease) were treated by a brief course of PAC chemotherapy. Long-term survival and toxicity were evaluated for both treatment groups. Cyclic PAC chemotherapy improved the overall outcome of patients (66.6% 3-year and 56.5% 5-year survival rates) compared to brief PAC (41.2% 3-year and 23.5% 5-year survival rates) (P 〈 0.01). The outcome of patients with stage III-IV ovarian cancer of the cyclic PAC group (52.6% 3-year and 37.2% 5-year survival rates) was also superior to that of the brief PAC group (21.7% 3-year and 8.7% 5-year survival rates). Generally, the treatment was well tolerated. The toxicity was similar in both groups, although myelosuppresion and neurotoxicity were rather prominent in the cyclic PAC group. Cyclic PAC chemotherapy may lead to improved survival in advanced ovarian cancer, and merits further investigation in a randomized study.

    Notes: We obtained a successful response to PUVA therapy in a 51-year-old Japanese man who had multiple nodules of the trunk, extremities and scalp along with polyclonal hypergammaglobulinaemia; the scalp lesions were associated with extensive alopecia. Examination of skin biopsies showed a dense infiltrate of mature plasma cells in the dermis and hair follicles; no systemic disease or functional involvement of other organs was detected. The clinical and histological findings were compatible with cutaneous plasmacytosis and treatment with topical PUVA gradually reduced the size and number of the lesions.

    Notes: (Co0.9Fe0.1)80B20/Cu/(Co0.9Fe0.1)80B20/Ni80Fe20/Fe50Mn50 spin-valve structures with a different Ni80Fe20 layer thickness were prepared by ion-beam sputtering. Varying the thickness of the Ni80Fe20 layer made it possible to control the exchange coupling between the Fe50Mn50 and amorphous CoFeB layers. When no Ni80Fe20 layer was inserted, the exchange coupling was responsible for increasing the coercivity of the a-CoFeB layers. With increasing Ni80Fe20 layer thickness, the biasing fields of the Fe50Mn50 layer increased from 0 to 125 Oe. The critical Ni80Fe20 thickness, above which the biasing effect was observed, was experimentally estimated to be 2 nm. ©1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The electronic structure for graphene monolayer tubules is predicted as a function of the diameter and helicity of the constituent graphene tubules. The calculated results show that approximately 1/3 of these tubules are a one-dimensional metal which is stable against a Peierls distortion, and the other 2/3 are one-dimensional semiconductors. The implications of these results are discussed.

    Notes: We demonstrate an in situ selective adsorption of Si nanoparticles fabricated by laser ablation on a functionalized self-assembled monolayer (SAM). Si nanoparticles adsorbed on –CH3 terminated a SAM while Si particles did not adsorb on –NH2, –F, –OH, and –COOH, terminated SAMs. The end group of a SAM solely determines the selectivity against Si nanoparticle adsorption. We utilized the screening ability of functionalized SAMs to pattern Si nanoparticles onto desired locations on a Si substrate. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We studied different schemes of noise reduction using active compensation of environmental magnetic field noises in order to develop a high-temperature-superconductor (HTS) magnetometer system for the measurement of magnetocardiographic signals. The active compensation was combined with weak passive shielding of about 20 dB by the use of a magnetically shielded room (MSR) having a single layer of surrounding μ-metal. A novel method using a normal detection coil and compensation coils that were wound around the walls of the MSR to enable magnetic coupling was examined. Effective suppression of environmental field noises of more than 20 dB at 0.5–10 Hz and 10 dB at 10–100 Hz, covering the low-frequency range of biological signals, was obtained. In an alternative method using a reference HTS magnetometer in the MSR for noise detection, a compensation coil was set in the MSR and served as a feedback coil in operating the magnetometer. Residual field noises that were limited by the intrinsic noise of the reference magnetometer were obtained. Using such active compensation and weak passive shielding, measurement of magnetocardiogram was possible with a sensing HTS magnetometer in a wide frequency range of 0.5–100 Hz. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A new electron cyclotron resonance ion source has been designed and equipped with the new cyclotron at the Cyclotron and Radioisotope Center, Tohoku University. The ion source consists of a full permanent-magnet system with a microwave frequency of 14.5 GHz. The source has the following three main features: (1) V-style magnetization, (2) flat-bottomed magnetic-field distribution, and (3) field adjusting system. The measured magnetic-field strength in the plasma chamber is about 8% weaker than the calculated value. The extracted beam current is measured as the preliminary result. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Background Eosinophils play a critical role in the pathogenesis of allergic diseases. CC chemokines, such as regulated on activation, normal, T cell expressed, and secreted (RANTES), are key regulators of eosinophil locomotion. Although eosinophils migrate from the bloodstream into tissues, mechanisms that generate a chemogradient across the endothelium remain to be fully elucidated.Objective We first examined the polar secretion of RANTES by endothelial cells. We also studied the functional scavenging effect of red blood cells (RBCs) on RANTES secreted into the intravascular side.Methods and results Endothelial cells were cultured in a transwell chamber with a membrane pore size of 0.45, 3.0, and 8.0 μm and stimulated with TNF-α, IL-1β, or IFN-γ from the apical or basolateral side for 16 h. The measurement of RANTES in the supernatant was performed by ELISA. We did not see any difference in the amount of RANTES secreted from the cytokine-stimulated endothelium between inner (intravascular side) and outer (extravascular side) wells separated by the 8.0-μm membrane, although apical polarization was observed with the 0.45-μm membrane. The addition of RBCs (hemoglobin (Hb): 0.5–15 g/dL) to the apical supernatant of TNF-α-stimulated endothelial cells reduced the RANTES level in a concentration-dependent manner. The treatment of supernatant on the intravascular side with RBCs significantly enhanced the migration of eosinophils.Conclusion RBCs possess a scavenging effect on intravascular RANTES, and thereby regulate transendothelial migration of eosinophils. Our findings suggest a new role of RBCs in allergic inflammation.
