Notes: : The interaction between probiotic (Enterococcus spp., Lactobacillus spp., and Lactococcus spp.) and enteric (Bacteroides spp., Escherichia coli, and Salmonella spp.) bacteria with respect to menaquinone production was examined. Menaquinones were measured in cell pellets by high-pressure liquid chromatography and the main homologues produced were MIK7–11. The growth of both Bacteroides and E. coli cultured with the 3 probiotics was significantly inhibited with concomitant reduction in menaquinone production. The vitamin K status of humans could be affected by consumption of probiotic dairy foods via the contribution made by gut microflora.

Notes: : Turnip greens, a Brassica, are characterized by a sulfurous aroma, pungent flavor, and a bitter taste due to isothiocyanates, degradation products of glucosinolates. This study examined the sensory characteristics and preference of turnip greens as affected by variety and maturity. A descriptive analysis panel characterized 16 aromas, flavors, and tastes. The intensity of mustard oil/mustard green aroma and flavor and bitterness was significantly affected (P 〈 0.05) by variety. Mustard oil/mustard green aroma and flavor, bitterness, and bitter aftertaste increased significantly (P 〈 0.05) with maturity. Seven Top was preferred significantly (P 〈 0.05) less than the remaining varieties and as the greens matured, preference decreased.

Notes: A new experimental procedure for conducting reactive laser vaporizations is described and applied to the generation of the previously unreported copper radicals, 13CH3CuF, 12CH3CuF, HCuF, and DCuF, for rare gas matrix ESR investigations. Laser vaporization was conducted on a thin film of reactant condensed on the copper metal surface. The g and A tensors for these are compared with other small copper radicals in order to determine electronic structure and bonding trends. The neon magnetic parameters (MHz) for 13CH363CuF are: g(parallel) =1.965(1), g⊥ =2.3626(3); A(parallel)(63Cu) =3076(2), A⊥(63Cu) =2993(1); A(parallel)(19F) =94(1), A⊥(19F) =68(1); A(parallel)(13C) =19(1), A⊥(13C) 〈3. The H quartet hfs for CH3CuF was resolved on the perpendicular transitions, having an A value of 9.3(3) MHz. For H63CuF, the neon results (MHz) are: g(parallel) =1.975(1); g⊥ =2.4075(4); A(parallel)(63Cu) =2826(3), A⊥(63Cu) =2717(1); A(parallel)(19F) =127(2), A⊥(19F) =94(1); A(parallel)(H) =61(3), and A⊥(H) =29(1) MHz.

Notes: This is a retrospective study on the use of postoperative opioids in neonates admitted to the surgical intensive care unit at Great Ormond Street over a 5-year period (1980 84). A total of 131 (14%) babies received opioids out of 933 neonates admitted to the unit. The use of opioids increased from 9.7% to 27.2% of admitted cases during the survey period. Postoperative ventilation of the lungs was necessary in 240 (25.7%) cases and 88 (36.6%) of these were given opioids. Four babies initially failed to wean from controlled ventilation as a result of opioid induced respiratory depression. A total of 51 (7.35%) spontaneously breathing neonates received opioids and seven (13.7%) of these developed apnoea or respiratory failure thought to be induced by opioids. The administration of opioids by nurses occurred most frequently in the late evening and early hours of the morning, when medical cover is at its lowest level.
