    Notes: The feasibility of using hot plasmas as strippers for low-energy ion beams has been investigated by measuring charge state distributions of 350 keV/u ions (12C,16O,19F) after their passage through a laser-produced plasma target. The plasma target was produced by irradiating a small pellet of lithium hydride with a Nd-glass laser. The profiles of electron densities of the plasma target were estimated from the intensity profiles of an Ar laser refracted by the plasma. The intensities of ions with different charge states were simultaneously measured using a time-resolved magnetic spectrograph. It was found that this plasma can yield higher charge states than conventional gaseous or solid strippers. Results of a numerical analysis are compared with the experimental data to explain the observed stripping capability of the plasma. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We have developed a high-current laser ion source that can provide low-charge-state ions for induction accelerators. A frequency-doubled Nd:YAG laser (λ=532 nm) irradiated a copper target with relatively low intensities of 108–109 W/cm2. The laser-produced plasma supplied a large number of Cu+ and Cu2+ ions over 1014 ions/cm2 at a distance of 10 cm from the target. We have successfully extracted high-current copper beams over 0.1 A/cm2 using an inductive acceleration module. The beam emittance measured by a pepper-pot method was about 40 πmm mrad. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: summary  The present study was conducted to investigate the relationship between mandibular movement (lateral excursion and masticatory movements) and craniofacial morphology in 16 patients with mandibular deviation, using a six degrees-of-freedom measuring device. (i) Mandibular deviation was found to be significantly related to frontal maxillary and occlusal plane angles. (ii) Three-dimensional non-working condylar and incisal path lengths were longer during the lateral excursion to the non-deviated side than to the deviated side, and the incisal path moved antero-inferior. (iii) The lateral motion range of the incisal path was wider during masticatory movement on the non-deviated side than on the deviated side, and the molar and non-working condylar path lengths corresponding to the lateral range of the incisal path were also longer on the non-deviated side. The group with posterior crossbite showed a significantly smaller horizontal range of incisal path, and also significantly smaller frontal projected incisal and molar path angles during masticatory movement on the deviated side than on the non-deviated side. These results suggest that lateral excursion and masticatory movements could be related to craniofacial morphology and posterior crossbite.

    Notes: Abstract Spherical, submicrometre, amorphous hydrous titania powder synthesized by controlled hydrolysis and polymerization from titanium tetraethoxide solutions was hydrothermally converted to spherical polycrystalline anatase particles by autoclaving or refluxing. Green compacts produced with either autoclaved or refluxed powder via a colloid filtration route had a high density and were crack-free; processing with untreated hydrous titania resulted in cracked green compacts. Compacts of the hydrothermally treated powders could be sintered to 98% theoretical density at temperatures as low as 900° C. A compact of commercial powder produced in the same fashion was not observed to densify at such temperatures. Using various firing techniques, compacts of the hydrothermally treated powder could be sintered to 98% theoretical density or greater while controlling the titania phase assemblage as (1) anatase, (2) rutile, or (3) a mixture of anatase and rutile. By scaling the phase transformation and sintering kinetics, the grain size of the sintered microstructure can be controlled from a submicrometre to a micrometre scale.
