Notes: The operation of a novel monolithic sapphire transducer from room temperature to cryogenic temperature is presented. The transducer is a microwave sapphire resonator that senses the motion of internal acoustic resonances through the interaction between electric and acoustic fields. The system is noncontacting and has low mechanical and electrical losses. Also, the microwave characteristics of sapphire are used as an inherent temperature sensor. High mechanical quality factors of 108 and 4.5×108 were attained at 300 and 4 K, respectively. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Spontaneous genome mutations in ten patients with porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT) amounted to 1 02% as compared to 0.36% in the control group of healthy individuals (P〈0.01). Spontaneous structural chromosome aberrations in patients were seen in 2.39% of the examined cells versus 0.70% in the cells of controls (P〈0.01). The increased percentage of cells with spontaneous genome and chromosome mutations in patients with PCT cannot be associated with alcohol only.

Notes: Serum γ-glutamyl transferase was elevated fourfold in all thirty-four new cases of porphyria cutanea tarda. Phlebotomy treatment decreased it. The twelve patients in relapse showed a considerable increase, while those in remission tended to a gradual elevation in the enzyme over the course of years. γ-Glutamyl transferase is a useful auxiliary parameter in porphyria cutanea tarda particularly in untreated cases.

Notes: Abstract By the method of saturation of absorption of counterpropagating light waves, the gas-phase spectrum of SiF4 is obtained without Doppler broadening of spectral lines. In the frequency range of the generation of a low-pressure CO2 laser (the 9.4-μm band), multiplets of the superfine structure (associated with tunneling transitions between the states of rotation about the equivalent symmetry axes of the SiF4 molecule) of the spectrum were observed. Weak satellites were observed in the vicinity of the multiplets. Some of the satellites were interpreted as resonances formed by the collisional transfer of the three-photon Bennett holes and peaks.

Notes: Abstract The N=2 supersymmetric extension of the Liouville equation is presented. We construct for it the zero-curvature representation (on superalgebra osp(2|2)) together with an associated linear set, find its general solution and discuss the reduction to the N=1 case. An intrinsic connection of the N=0, N=1, and N=2 Liouville equations with the infinite dimensional contact (super)algebras IK(1), IK(1|1) and IK(1|2) from Kac's list is established.

Notes: Abstract The Liouville equation is shown to have a natural interpretation in terms of the nonlinear realization of an infinite parameter conformal group in 1+1-dimensions. The relevant zero-curvature representation and Bäcklund transformations get a simple treatment in this approach. The proposed construction can hopefully be generalized to other integrable systems.

Notes: Abstract Two sequences of OSO-4 spectroheliograms in Mg x and Si xii obtained during October–November 1967 and covering the intervals of 83 and 22 hr, respectively, have been analyzed to reveal quasi-periodic oscillations of EUV flux from solar sources with a periodicity of 5–14 hr. The oscillation periods of the emission flux from local sources over sunspots and magnetic field enhancements in plages without spots have been investigated in correlation with characteristics of the respective AR and plages. The greatest periods (〉 8 hr) are shown to be peculiar of small sunspots or sunspot groups at the initial or final stage of their development, whereas the smallest periods (∼ 5–6 hr) are observed in the case of large well-developed groups at the maximum stage of development. In quiet regions on the Sun and plages without spots, the oscillation periods are ∼ 6–8 hr. The surface areas in which the oscillations are synchronous and coincide in phase have typical dimensions of ≲1′ in quiet and 1 to 5′ in active regions. These areas form a spatial structure similar to the chromospheric network and supergranules. The characteristic lifetime of the structure elements is ∼ 1.5–2 days.

Notes: Summary Fasting for 2 and 4 days progressively increases the activity of hepatic γ-glutamyl transferase (γ-GT) in rat. A high-protein diet (with 42.6 energy percent of protein) for 45 and 90 days inhibits it. It seems that liver γ-GT is susceptible to nutritional influences.

Notes: Abstract Mechanochemical Processing (MCP) is the term applied to the powder metallurgy process in which chemical reactions and phase transformations take place due to the application of mechanical energy. Mechanical alloying (MA) is a powder-processing technique involving deformation, cold welding, fracturing, and rewelding of powder particles in a ball mill. The technique of MCP has had a long history and the materials produced this way have already found a number of potential technological applications, e.g., in areas such as hydrogen storage materials, heaters, gas absorbers, fertilizers, catalysts, cosmetics, and waste management. Mechanical alloying has become an established commercial technique to produce oxide dispersion strengthened nickel- and iron-based superalloys. The present paper briefly discusses the basic mechanisms of formation of phases by the techniques of MA and MCP; the variety of possible technological applications of mechanically alloyed or mechanochemically processed products are highlighted. The main focus of this paper is on exploring the feasibility of these processing techniques to produce novel advanced materials and their comparison with competing technologies.
