Notes: The temporal losses of confinement during edge localized modes in the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute Tokamak-60 Upgrade (JT-60U) show multifractal scaling and the spectra are generally smooth, but in some cases there are signs of discontinuous derivatives. Dynamics of the Sugama–Horton model, interpreted as edge localized modes, also display multifractal scaling. The spectra display singularities in the derivative, which can be interpreted as a phase transition. It is argued that the multifractal spectra of edge localized modes can be used to discriminate between different experimental discharges and validate edge localized mode models. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Magneto-optical (MO) recording signals were enhanced by a nonmagnetic mask layer combining a silver oxide (AgOx) thin film and near-field coupled super-resolution. The signal intensity of 300 nm marks recorded by a 680 nm laser and a lens numerical aperture of 0.55 with light-intensity modulation was amplified 100 times in comparison with conventional MO media. Resolution of less than 200 nm was achieved by near-field coupling between a light-scattering center generated in the AgOx film and light polarization of MO marks. To identify near-field enhancement, we simulated electrical field components, finding that near-field coupling between the light-scattering center and a MO layer enhances MO signals about 20 times due to the surface plasmon effect. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A proposal for a photonic transistor is made and some basic proving experiments are described. These experiments show that by focusing two laser beams (405 and 635 nm) in one small spot on a high-speed rotating optical disk, a large signal enhancement is observed. It was found that a plasmon interaction generated between a silver light-scattering center and recorded small marks in the optical disk with a super-resolution near-field structure produced the large signal amplification in the spot (〈1 μm). A modulated signal of the blue laser was enhanced by 60 times by controlling the red laser power from 1.5 to 3.5 mW. It has been shown that the system has the potential to realize all-thin-films photonic transistors by using local plasmon amplification. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: : Glycomacropeptide (GMP) was purified from chymosin-hydrolyzed caseinate solution by the procedure involving: (1) gel chromatography on Sephacryl S-200 at pH 7.0 to obtain a crude GMP fraction; (2) addition of acidic solution, pH 3.5 to the crude glycomacropeptide to precipitate contaminating protein and/or peptide; and (3) re-chromatography of the material soluble in the acidic solution on Sephacryl S-200 at pH 3.5. The purified GMP accounted for 5.3% of dry weight of caseinate hydrolysate, and 0.7% of dry weight of sodium caseinate powder. The preparation was of considerably high purity with its amino-acid composition showing only traces (each 〈 1 residue / peptide) of arginine, histidine, phenylalanine, and tyrosine, the amino acids that do not occur in GMP.

Notes: Abstract: Using results of a direct numerical simulation (DNS) of 3D turbulence we show that the observed generalized scaling (i.e. scaling moments versus moments of different orders) is consistent with a lognormal-like distribution of turbulent energy dissipation fluctuations with moderate amplitudes for all space scales available in this DNS (beginning from the molecular viscosity scale up to largest ones). Local multifractal thermodynamics has been developed to interpret the data obtained using the generalized scaling, and a new interval of space scales with inverse cascade of generalized energy has been found between dissipative and inertial intervals of scales for sufficiently large values of the Reynolds number.

Notes: Abstract. When a brassinosteroid biosynthesis inhibitor, brassinazole (Brz), was applied at concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 2 μM, Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh seedlings grown in the dark exhibited morphological features of light-grown plants, i.e. short hypocotyls, expanded cotyledons, and true leaves, in a dose-dependent manner. Control (non Brz-treated) seedlings grown in the dark for 40 d did not develop leaf primordia. However, treatment with the lowest concentration of Brz induced the development of leaf buds, although it hardly induced any short hypocotyls, and treatment with the highest concentration of Brz induced both short hypocotyls and leaves. Labeling experiments with the thymidine analogue 5-bromo-2′-deoxyuridine revealed that amplification of cell nuclei and organellar nucleoids is activated in the shoot apical meristems of dark-grown Brz-treated seedlings. These results suggest that Brz-treatment induces development of true leaves. Furthermore, condensation and scattering of plastid nucleoids, which is known to occur during the differentiation of etioplasts into chloroplasts, was observed in the plastids of dark-grown Brz-treated cotyledons. In addition, high levels of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase proteins accumulated in the plastids of the cotyledons. Electron microscopy showed that the plastids were etioplasts with a prolamellar body and few thylakoid membranes. These results suggest that Brz treatment in the dark induces the initial steps of plastid differentiation, which occur prior to the development of thylakoid membranes. This is a novel presumed function of brassinosteroids. These cytological changes seen in Brz-treated Arabidopsis were exactly the same as those seen in a brassinosteroid-biosynthesis-deficient mutant, det2, supporting the hypothesis that Brz has no side-effects except inhibiting brassinosteroid biosynthesis, and should prove a useful tool in clarifying the role of brassinosteroids.

Notes: Summary.  We report the entire open reading frames (ORFs) sequences of four TT virus (TTV) isolates, one genotype 2 (G2) and three G4 isolates. Despite a DNA virus, TTV possesses high rate of amino acid (aa) substitution: the aa sequence homology of ORF1 and 2 is lower than the nucleotide homology. The partial ‘N22’ region of ORF1 is suitable for genotyping of ‘prototype TTV’ isolates, because the phylogenetic tree from partial ‘N22’ sequence is consistent with that from the entire ORF1. Based on our sequence data, ORF2 from most isolates excluding G1 encode truncated 49 aa (pORF2a) because of an in-frame stop codon, although ORF2s from most G1 isolates encode 202 aa (pORF2ab). Just downstream the stop codon, another ORF encoding a protein of approximately 150 aa (pORF2b) is found, whose homology is quite low among these genotypes. Our in vitro transcription/translation study supports that all G1a and a part of G1b without an in-frame stop codon dominantly encode pORF2ab, a novel 23 kDa protein, whereas the other genotypes with an in-frame stop codon encode pORF2b (17 kDa). Our data indicate TTV G1a and a part of G1b should have different characteristics from the other genotypes.
