Notes: Spin splitting of conduction band electrons in In0.53Ga0.47As/In0.77Ga0.23As/InP heterostructures due to spin-orbit coupling is studied by performing Shubnikov–de Haas measurements on nongated and gated Hall bars. From an analysis of the beating pattern in the Shubnikov–de Haas oscillations, the spin-orbit coupling constant is determined. For a symmetric sample no beating pattern and thus no spin splitting is observed. This demonstrates that the k3 contribution to the spin-orbit coupling constant can be neglected. By applying an envelope function theory it is shown that the major contribution to the Rashba spin-orbit coupling originates from the band offset at the interface of the quantum well. Using gated Hall bar structures it is possible to alter the spin-orbit coupling by application of an appropriate gate voltage. A more negative gate voltage leads to a more pronounced asymmetry of the quantum well, which gives rise to a stronger spin-orbit coupling. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: In this noninterventional study, the implementation of ‘modern’ pain management in clinical practice was investigated by recording the regular prescription, administration and efficacy of analgesic drugs. This resulted in a reproducible and superficial quality control design for hospitals. One hundred and fifty surgical patients were followed during 5 days postoperatively. For every patient, pain, mood and sedation were measured using visual analogue and verbal descriptive scores; the prescription of analgesics at set times and administered doses of analgesics were also recorded. Only paracodeine and naproxen were administered regularly as prescribed, unlike paracetamol and morphine. The prescribed daily dose of morphine was only received by 4.2% of all patients. Although the postoperative pain treatment pathway was considered to be improved after better education and communication, in fact the opposite was found. This is probably caused by traditional thinking, lack of control and time pressure on the hospital staff and the subservient attitude of the patient.

Notes: Analysis of beat-to-beat fluctuations of heart rate and blood pressure is a promising new approach to the clinical diagnosis and management of alterations in cardiovascular regulation. We investigated the effects of three induction agents on beat-to-beat heart rate and blood pressure fluctuations in man. Beat-to-beat fluctuations were analysed by spectral analysis. Two spectral areas are of main interest. One area is centred on the respiratory frequency and shifts with changes in respiratory rate (High Frequency area). These high frequency flucuations in heart rate are caused by respiratory-induced blood pressure fluctuations, mediated by the vagus nerve through the baroreflex mechanism. Variability in the Low Frequency area, which occurs between 0.06 and 0.12 Hz is considered to be related to haemodynamic fluctuations due to the sympathetic baroreflex control loop of vasomotor activity and heart rate. Results from our study indicate that thiopentone, etomidate and propofol show considerable differences in their effects on beat-to-beat variability of heart rate and blood pressure. These differences can be explained by their specific effects on the cardiovascular system.

Notes: The application of single-board microcomputers as programmable interfaces simplifies the construction of complex diffractometer control units. The amount of hardware components of the control units is reduced and the structure of the circuits is easy to survey. These intelligent multipurpose single-board microcomputers unburden the personal computer and simplify the development of the diffractometer measuring program. The presented solution is based on an Atari 1040 STF. The concept, however, can be applied to any type of personal computer.

Notes: The application of an ultrafast analogue-to-digital converter and a high-performance-single board microcomputer permits the construction of a very fast and versatile multichannel analyser (MCA) at low cost. With the powerful instruction set of the microprocessor MC 68000, an intelligent all-round MCA could be realised with useful correction software on the single-board microcomputer. This MCA was used successfully for a data collection by Laue techniques with a four-circle diffractometer.

Notes: The Laue technique shortens the time required to measure integrated intensities for X-ray structure determination. The Laue diffractometer presented here is a δ-circle diffractometer equipped with an ordinary low-cost photomultiplier-scintillation-crystal combination. Stepper-motor control devices and the multichannel analyzer (MCA) were originally developed for this particular purpose. These components are equipped with efficient microprocessor technology. A personal computer with graphic facilities is used for processing. Using special procedures in the analysis and the measurement of data, the disadvantages of a scintillation counter may be avoided or reduced.

Notes: For the transition of the structure factors of benzil (B) to benzil (A), Colella [Acta Cryst. (1994), A50, 55–57] employs the relation TeXi.e., in matrix notation, TeX This relation is wrong since det (A) = 1. It is not a mapping onto an enantiomorph; for the change of handedness, det (A) must be −1. Moreover, matrix A is an element of the related point group 321. Thus, the result is symmetrically equivalent to the starting set of structure factors. As a consequence, all arguments presented on the basis of (1) are invalid.
