Notes: Summary Chemical quality of fine roots (〈1 mm diameter) was determined over a gradient of species composition in the Mixed Mesophytic Forest Region. Ash-free nitrogen, calcium, and phosphorus concentrations of roots declined by 49, 41, and 72%, respectively, over a gradient of increasing soil acidity (pH 5.3 to 4.7). Lignin concentration was unrelated to either the vegetation gradient or any of the soil changes it encompassed; however, astringent phenolics increased by 275% over the same gradient. Trends in the chemical constituency of fine roots suggest that the production of phenolics in below-ground plant parts is increased on nutrient-poor sites. This response is best related to changes in species composition, especially increasing importancy of Quercus spp.

Notes: Summary The chemical constituency of flowering dogwood (Cornus florida L.) and red maple (Acer rubrum L.) foliage was analyzed over a species compositional gradient to test the hypothesis that over subtle gradients of moisture and nutrient availability production of phenolic compounds will be increased on sites of greatest stress. Calcium and nitrogen concentrations declined along the gradient in both species, while phosphorus showed a significant decline only in red maple. Lignin concentrations in both species were unrelated to the vegetation gradient, but astringent phenolics increased by 156% and 159% in dogwood and red maple, respectively. The correlation between production of polyphenolds and site quality supports previous observations that under conditions of environmental stress production of many secondary compounds is increased, and suggests that this relationship is significant over subtle environmental gradients.

Notes: Homophthalic acid (1) undergoes reaction with 1,2-, 1,3-, and 1,4-diamines to give condensed 1(2H)-isoquinolinones like 2, 4, 13, and 25, which exhibit marked enamine character. These are attacked by electrophiles at the N or C terminus. Some notable reactions of imidazoisoquinolone 2 are those with maleic and acrylic acids to form the tetracycles 48 and 51, respectively. With propiolic acid, 5 underwent an interesting reaction to form the benzimidazonaphthyridine 53. An equally interesting behaviour was elicited from 2 in its reaction with formaldehyde, when in addition to the expected methylene-bridged molecule 59, the novel spiro derivative 60 was formed by the dimerisation of a presumed azadiene intermediate 63.

Notes: The synthesis, absolute configuration, and olfactive evaluation of (-)-(E)-α-trans-bergamotenone (= (-)-(1′S,6′R,E)-5-(2′,6′-dimethylbicyclo[3.1.1]hept-2′-en-6′-yl)pent-3-en-2-one; (-)-1), as well as its homologue (-)-19 are reperted. The previously arbitrarily attributed absolute configuration of 1 and of (-)-α-trans-bergamotene (= (-)-(1 S,6R)-2,6-dimethyl-6-(4-methylpent-3-enyl)bicyclo[3.1. 1]hept-2-ene; (-)-2), together with those of the structurally related aldehydes (-)-3a,b and alcohols (-)-4a,b, have been rigorously assigned.

Notes: Starting from γ- and δ-lactones 1-3, a two-step preparation of 3-hydroxypropyl and 4- hydroxybutyl propenyl ketones 10-18 is described, involving as the key step the β-cleavage of the bis(homoallylic) potassium alkoxides 4a-9a. The novel methodology is illustrated by a short synthesis of (±)-rose oxide(20).

Notes: The transformation of 36 bis(homoallylic) alcohols VII to alkenones IX and X via β-cleavage of their potassium alkoxides VIIa in HMPA has been investigated (cf. Scheme 2). These studies have established an order of β-cleavage for 2-propenyl, 1-methyl-2propenyl, 2-methyl-2-propenyl, 1,1-dimethyl-2propenyl, and benzyl groups in alkoxides 49a-56a and have allowed a comparison between the β-cleavege reaction and the oxy-Cope rearrangement in alkoxides 74a-83a. As illustrative syntheti applications, a two-step preparatio of propenyl ketones 15-42 from carboxylic esters is described, together with syntheses of ar-turmerone (48), α-damascone ((E)-71), β-damascone ((E)-109), and β-damascenone ((E)-111).

Notes: Dynamic shear experiments in the linear range of deformation and extensional tests at constant strain rate have been carried out on a linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) melt and on two branched low-density polyethylene (LDPE) melts with different amounts of long-chain branching. Both the dynamic shear moduli and the tensile stress obey the time-temperature superposition principle. A simple model based on a nonaffine generalized Maxwell model with two relaxation times is proposed to describe the rheological behavior in elongation of these melts. Close agreement between the model and the experimental data can be obtained by adjusting the two relaxation times and the “slip parameter” of entanglements. The variations of these parameters with strain rate and their relationship with molecular structure are discussed.

Notes: Vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is a potent angiogenic factor with a unique specificity for vascular endothelial cells. In addition to its role in vasculogenesis and embryonic angiogenesis, VEGF is implicated in pathologic neovascularization associated with tumors and diabetic retinopathy. Four different constructs of a short variant of VEGF sufficient for receptor binding were overexpressed in Escherichia coli, refolded, purified, and crystallized in five different space groups. In order to facilitate the product on of heavy atom derivatives, single cysteine mutants were designed based on the crystal structure of platelet-derived growth factor. A construct consisting of residues 8 to 109 was crystallized in space group P21, with cell parameters a = 55.6 Å, b = 60.4 Å, c = 77.7 Å, β = 90.0°, and four monomers in the asymmetric unit. Native and derivative data were collected for two of the cysteine mutants as well as for wild-type VEGF. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Notes: Bubble columns are commonly used in industry for polluted gas treatment. Based on the same principle, the droplet column which is not widely known in the literature, uses much higher gas velocities, up to 14 m/s. This study concerns the hydrodynamics and mass transfer in this apparatus, in presence or absence of solid particles. Our results have demonstrated the impact of dusts on mass transfer performance giving rise to an increase in the kL aL coefficient with decreasing particle size. However, no influence of dust on the hydrodynamics of the column has been demonstrated within the studied particle size range.A study of liquid holdups obtained by three different methods is also carried out. Our results are comparable, thus validating the methods used.
