    Notes: It was found that the Ga addition to NdFeCoB magnets was very effective for improving their magnetic properties. Magnets with high boron concentration had a high coercive force and magnets with low boron concentration had a high-energy product. The following magnetic properties were obtained: (1) Nd14.5FebalCo16Ga1B9.5:Br=12.0 kG, IHc=15.3 kOe, (BH)max=34 MGOe, Tc=500 °C (2) Nd14.5FebalCo16Ga1B5.5:Br=13.1 kG, IHc=12.2 kOe, (BH)max=40 MGOe, Tc=500 °C. It was also found that NdFeCoGaB magnets with very low boron concentration still had a relatively high coercive force.

    Notes: The magnetic anisotropy in Ni films deposited on Pyrex glass substrates by different sputtering methods, i.e., ion beam sputtering (IBS), triode rf sputtering, and diode rf sputtering, was studied in relation to the internal stress in the films. Strong in-plane easy magnetic anisotropy (Ku=−4.9×105 erg/cm3) was observed in IBS Ni films. The average in-plane stress in the IBS film was estimated from the radius of convex curvature of the disk substrate as large as −1.2×1010 dyn/cm2 (a negative sign implies the compressive stress), which is due to the atomic peening effect by kinetic incident atoms during deposition. The stress-induced magnetic anisotropy is calculated to be about −1.2×106 erg/cm3, which is overwhelming to the observed magnetic anisotropy in the IBS Ni film. Positive Ku and tensile internal stress, one or two order of magnitude smaller in absolute values than that in IBS film, were observed in Ni films prepared by the other sputtering methods.

    Notes: Nonstoichiometric FexO1−x and FexMyO1−x−y films, where M is either a nonmagnetic element, e.g., Si, or a magnetic element, e.g., Co, were prepared by sputter deposition. They showed increasing ferromagnetic magnetization with decreasing oxygen concentration below 1−x−y〈0.5, and strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy which overwhelmed the shape anisotropy of the thin ferromagnetic films in certain composition ranges. The magnetization of perpendicular magnetic films attained more than 500 emu/cm3 with an anisotropy energy of 2×106 erg/cm3. Ferromagnetic amorphous metallic phases precipitated between columnar structure of nonmagnetic oxide phase were considered to be responsible for the ferromagnetism of these films. The perpendicular anisotropy was also interpreted by the internal shape effect arising from fine elongated ferromagnetic phases distributed in a nonmagnetic phase with their long axis perpendicular to the film plane. They had an appropriate coercivity for the perpendicular magnetic recording media with a high resistance against wear and corrosion and a low friction constant.

    Notes: Light-dependent H2 evolution did not occur in nitrogen-deprived cultures of Rhodovulum sulfidophilum in the presence of ethanol. When ethanol was added to cells which had been grown with ammonia, derepression of the nitrogen fixation genes (nifHD) was inhibited at an ethanol concentration of 1 mM. On the other hand, when cells had nitrogenase-catalyzed proton-reducing activity prior to ethanol addition, reduction of the nifHD transcript level did not occur after the addition. In cells grown with ammonia, concomitant addition of an auxiliary oxidant such as dimethylsulfoxide or sodium bicarbonate resulted in derepression of nitrogenase activity in the presence of ethanol. These results suggest that the electron-accepting process is necessary for derepression of nif genes in cultures which use ethanol as the electron donor.

    Notes: Abstract We study the Bose-Einstein correlations (BEC) with the final state interactions (FSI) based on a framework of Bowler. Several new formulae including the FSI are utilized in analyses of data for π±π± production ine + e − annihilation by TPC, OPAL, DELPHI, and ALEPH Collaborations. Our results show that when the exponential and Gaussian distributions are used as the source functions the degree of coherence approaches approximately unity here. We analyse also data forK S 0 K S 0 pairs atZ-pole ine + e − annihilation and show that within the present statistical errors there is no difference between the BEC for pions and kaons. Moreover, using the same formulae we obtain a fractional degree of coherence for the data for BEC inp+p collision by NA27 Collaboration.

    Notes: Abstract In the absence of an external substrate, H 2 was evolved in Rhodovulum sulfidophilum under light-anaerobic conditions, along with degradation of poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB). Cells grown with succinate as a sole carbon source accumulated only a small amount of PHB compared with that in cells grown with a multiple substrate consisting of a mixture of four organic acids. Unlike PHB-containing cells, PHB-deficient cells did not evolve H in the absence of an external substrate. Nitrogenase activity was expressed while no hydrogenase activity was detected during the incubation of PHB-containing cells. These results suggest that intracellular PHB serves as a substrate for the H evolution catalyzed by nitrogenase when an external substrate is lacking.
